Tinubu’s Reinstated Fuel Subsidy Will Drain Almost Half Of Oil Revenue—IMF Warns by Lizzysamuel(f): 7:53pm On May 10
Nigeria’s reintroduction of a gasoline subsidy months after it was scrapped is expected to guzzle almost half of its projected oil revenue this year, according to the International Monetary Fund.

The implicit subsidy will cost Africa’s largest crude producer an estimated 8.43 trillion naira ($5.9 billion) of its projected 17.7 trillion naira of oil revenue, the IMF said in a report published on Thursday.

Its forecasts according Bloomberg are similar to Bank of America’s, which projects it could cost Nigeria between $7 billion and $10 billion this year if it imports between 18 and 25 billion liters of gasoline, Tatonga Rusike, BofA sub-Saharan Africa economist, wrote in a note.

“Fuel subsidies were reformed in June 2023, however, adequate compensatory measures for the poor were not scaled up in a timely manner and subsequently paused over corruption concerns,” the IMF said.

President Bola Tinubu halted the $10 billion subsidy at his inauguration mid-last year to help the government repair its finances after debt-service costs jumped to 96% of revenues.

The removal and a devaluation of the naira days later, which was aimed at creating a free-floating currency, led fuel prices to more than triple, fanning inflation and protests.

To help Nigerians cope, authorities started capping fuel pump prices below cost reintroducing implicit subsidies by end-2023, the IMF said.

The currency has depreciated by almost 70% against the dollar since last June.

Despite being Africa’s largest oil producer, Nigeria imports most of its gasoline needs because it lacks the refining capacity to meet domestic demand. The hope is that when a 650,000 barrel-a-day oil refinery outside Lagos, owned by Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest person, and one in Port Harcourt, controlled by state-owned Nigeria National Petroleum Co., come fully online that will change.

The IMF said it expects the fuel subsidy to be completely phased out within two years, as the government scales up its cash transfer program targeted at the country’s poorest. About 40% of Nigerians are extremely poor.

While the subsidy was removed on May 29, 2023, “all governments have the prerogative to maintain price stability and prevent social unrest,” Olu Verheijen, a senior energy aide to Tinubu told a news conference in Abuja in March. “If prices are moving, they reserve the right to intervene.”

I'd like to think that we Nigerians either like to deceive ourselves or we are just ignorant of what leadership is. In truth, leadership is NOT all about choosing between good and evil. No!

Think of a leader as a civilian in charge of security operatives chasing after one dangerous terrorist who has masterminded the killing of hundreds in the past. This terrorist runs into a building full of people just to escape from security operatives.

The leader knows that if he tells the security agents to go into the building to arrest the man, he will waste all of them and escape because he's a specialist in doing that. Instead, he tells them to throw bombs into the building, killing the terrorist and other innocent people.

The leader knows that if he keeps that terrorist alive, he will kill more. So, it's better to sacrifice just 5 - 10 innocent people in place of hundreds. That's something these leaders face every now and then.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala told Jonathan to remove the petrol subsidy in 2012. She took hours to convince Jonathan. Jonathan took weeks to think about it but wasn't convinced. Considering that his options were limited, Jonathan had to remove it anyways because keeping it means feeding a round-tripping cartel. And it backfired! It nearly led to a countrywide protest - a protester even died at Ojota! That's what it means to be a leader.

So, sometimes, we have to pity our leaders. We don't have access to the information they have. We don't know what they go through at night for making certain decisions. But, I like the way Buhari put it, "You cannot satisfy everyone. Just make a decision that will enable you to sleep at night."

If you read up to this point, my point is, leadership is hard!

Let it drink and drain it.
We can afford to spend N90Bn to go and stone the devil after all,so subsidy should be maintained .

Which subsidy again

"Subsidy is gone"--Bola A Tinubu. 29th May, 2023

And that's the reason we are buying fuel at over N700 per liter from N185 where Tinubu met it

So Tinubu is paying more for Subsidy today then Buhari did and yet the price has more than triple, this is pathetic. I got fuel for 850 per litre today, I know that 1000 per litre is inevitable.

Tinubu was very careless to declare that fuel subsidy was gone on the day of his inauguration without even making proper arrangements for the expected ripple effect, floating the Naira immediately after that doesn't make sense either, they created a mess, this government has been so pathetic when it comes to the management of the Nigerian economy.

I think this imperialist and mad neocolonialist are the biggest problem of Asiwaju.
These Mad people told Asiwaju to remove Fuel Subsidy he obeyed, the country went into immeasurable hardship,if the President decides to allegedly reintroduce subsidy on a lower scale to stop the total decimation of the masses, why are these made neocolonialist complaining again.
I totally disbelieve this allegations of subsidy, and these are my reasons.
I say this with a reasonable level of factuality that as of Today,Dangote is selling a litre of Diesel for 850 naira, without any form of Subsidy.
I know people who are loading the product directly from the Refinery and he's selling at 850 naira.
For the sake of argument, let us agree he's selling at 900,I can say factually again if there's any level of Subsidy it should never be in the range of 5 billion Usd.
There's no way Nigeria should pay 5 billion Usd as subsidy this year unless The NNPCL wants to continue stealing all the oil revenue.
My advice to Asiwaju is to instruct the NNPCL to stop the payment of this dubious subsidy and funnel all the money on crude oil sales to the CBN,and instead of paying subsidies to European Refineries, the crude oil should be given to Dangote to Refine.
It doesn't make any sense,I repeat any sense for This country to extract crude oil and sell it overseas, then Use almost half of the proceeds to pay Subsidy.
It's the most foolish Economic principle I have seen in all my life, enough of this stupidity and merry go round stealing.
Asiwaju should man up and stop this Economic sabotage in the name of Subsidy.
God bless Nigeria.

I won't be surprise if Ethan Hunt and his IMF team is working underground to ensure things remain this way. grin cheesy

Subsidy is gone! We have removed subsidy to increase revenue and turn Nigeria into a mega, first world country.

Those guys at IMF are on colos. How dare they claim subsidy is back? We are buying fuel at four time the cost and you're still talking about subsidy.

How dare they try to say our leaders are clueless. God forbid we have morons in power. It's impossible.
