Have you ever experienced weakening of maize stems and falling of the plants after 2,4-D application for weed control?

How did you control it, what did you do to prevent a recurrence?

You must have contravened one or both of these...
1. You must have used excess. Don't use beyond 100ml. What quantity did you use?
2. Even with 100ml per 16L pump, it's best applied when your maize is young...less than 4weeks. Once it's above 1 month, don't use 2,4-D instead use Nicosulfuron.

1. No, I didn't use excess. While they specify 120mL/16L for maize, I've always used between 50-70mL to avoid its side effects.

2. About 5 weeks. Meanwhile, this isn't the first time I'd be applying 2,4-D at five to six weeks without the stems getting so weakened to the point of breakage. So it's shocking. I think it must have been triggered by the rainfall that was received a day after the application or that the contents of the herbicide have been altered.

Its important we abandon this inorganic farming methods and adapt organic non gmo farming practices. I remember when i was younger we had a farm close to the main house where we used poultry manure to grow organic maize or corn. The corn crops were healthy and the maize cobs were huge due to the very fertile soil. Some of these modern farming methods are a disaster and the eventual crop priduce is not as nutritive as crops grown in the past. I have reiterated in the past for large scale organic farming protocols.

Thanks for the beautiful input. The problem, however, is organic farming is not practical in Nigeria - large scale especially.
