Don't be surprised that UniBen has Electrical/Electronics Engineering department churning out thousands of half-baked graduates every year. How come Nigerian universities don't ever embark on any groundbreaking research or reverse-engineer products from China or the West? When they get grants, they use it in purchasing expensive SUVs and Hilux instead. The same professors will be in the churches on Sunday shouting "ancestral curse!"

Truth is, UNIBEN enjoys close to 24-hour supply. In Fact, they can go on for 72 hours without the light blinking. Courtesy of the independent Power Plant (IPP) inside the school.
Stores and shops inside UNIBEN are all metered, same with private residential areas like staff Quarters and religious houses.

The crux of the problem is the Student's hostels. There are more than 11 student hostels in UNIBEN. With a population of more than 7000 occupants. This is where the calculations should start from.

I think most departments should start thinking of how to go off-grid. This will really help.

As a graduating class, we did a Solar project for our department. Solar that can power the HOD's offices and our presentation room courtesy of our Course adviser who sold this brilliant idea to us.

Thou I know departments like Geology have been off the grid. I think they have a massive solar system too.

If other departments can follow suit this will drastically reduce the energy load needed to be supplied.

Way to go.

God Bless UNIBEN
God Bless Edo State
God Bless Nigeria.

The bill is too much. I don't think it is sustainable, they won't be able to meet up paying 260 million naira for electricity every month.

I even believe these Universities are over billed. What are they really consuming to amount to 260 milllion naira monthly.

OAU also had similar issues about 2 years ago where they complained of paying a bill of 80 million naira for electricity monthly. I believe by now their own bill would have reached about 260 million naira per month too due to the recent hike.

BEDC may be right because these coys have a central meter you can't bypass. With all those ACs, students using electric cookers, iron etc. You think it is all a joke? I was testing my our 1.5KVA bore pump yesterday and for just 55 minutes, this machine has gulp 2 kilowatt power totally #245 for band B/C customers. What if I am migrated to Band A ? Imagine running this twice daily for 30 days? Other loads in the entire house not yet added?

This is to address the misleading information circulating on WhatsApp groups within our University (UNIBEN) Community, Tagged -

THREAT BY BEDC TO DISCONNECT THE UNIVERSITY

After reading the content supposedly signed by our University Management, it became imperative to clarify some issues.

The claim that the April 2024 electricity bill being outrageous is actually mis-leading, as the bill was based on actual meter readings, as consumed by UNIBEN.

The significant increase in the billed amount from previous months is due to a government-mandated tariff increase for Band A customers, which applies to all DISCOs, including BEDC.

The increase was from N68/KWh to N225/KWh but later slashed to 206/KWh. see link for details https:///tariffincrease

Therefore, the purported threat of the withdrawal of supply by BEDC is likely as a result of the University Management refusal to make payment for energy consumed in April 2024.

Let's all hope payment is made ASAP to avoid the said disconnection...

GREATEST UNIBEN!!!
