Management of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has served authorities of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) a disconnection notice over failure to clear its outstanding light bill, CAMPUS GIST reports.

A notice pasted on the walls of the University sighted by this online medium, dated 22nd May, 2024 and signed by one Engr Tobi, gave the University three days to clear the N264,490,313 million estimated bill for the month of April.

The development comes barely one week after the University resorted to load shedding following the 340 per cent astronomical rise in its electricity bill as a result of the recent hike in tariff by the Nigerian government, particularly for Band A consumers, where UNIBEN is currently connected to.

CAMPUS GIST reports that the University’s management had in a memo to its community, titled: ‘Update on Power Supply to University Community’, said it could no longer cope with the new tariff which resulted to a consumption of N280 million from N80 million for the month of April, 2024.

UNIBEN had, however, revealed that it had entered into negotiation with BEDC over the development and expressed optimism that normalcy of power supply would be restored as soon as negotiations were concluded.

"Management appreciates your usual support, understanding and regrets any inconveniences the increment may have caused you,” the statement read.

But sadly, amid the ongoing negotiations and load shedding, the Management of BEDC has issued the University Management a three-day ultimatum to pay up their bills or have their services (electricity) withdrawn from the University premises.

As at the time of filling this report, the University Management was yet to formally comment on the latest development. Efforts to get the reaction of Spokesperson for the Institution, Dr Benedicta Ehanire were unsuccessful.

But it's funny so can't the school resort to installing solar in class rooms, then reduce the wage bill of the light by limiting it to labs or areas with heavy equipment.

When will the government realize it has made life so unbearable for the citizens?

Well, it's own agencies and establishment are beginning to feel the heat 🔥

See country with misplaced priorities...

Just few days ago, VP announced 90 billion for subsiding Hajj

and here today, a great citadel of learning is about to go dark for mere 264 million, not a billion..

If they increase Hajj spending, it won't add a value to the economy but education will..

May God have mercy on Nigeria

Invest that money on solar

Our universities should use the brain resources in engineering and business to solutionize power for internal consumption with full independence. Make NEPA your redundancy

Install solar, generate your own power somehow... I wonder how they expect an educational institution to come up with 280 m every month!

You actually believe the energy saving bulbs and fans in class rooms amounts to this bill? It's a government institution which in reality most of them won't even be working.

This is not even metered billing. If you like suffer yourself in darkness. You will still pay bills. The school should also have staff quarters, Churches, Mosques, several offices and business places. Do you throw them into darkness too?

What is happening now is unusual and should be prompting us to occupy the streets not criticise the institution whose bill was tripled for no just cause. Even the initial bill of 80m was ridiculous. That company is just milking consumers

Truth is, UNIBEN enjoys close to 24-hour supply. In Fact, they can go on for 72 hours without the light blinking. Courtesy of the independent Power Plant (IPP) inside the school.
Stores and shops inside UNIBEN are all metered, same with private residential areas like staff Quarters and religious houses.

The crux of the problem is the Student's hostels. There are more than 11 student hostels in UNIBEN. With a population of more than 7000 occupants. This is where the calculations should start from.

I think most departments should start thinking of how to go off-grid. This will really help.

As a graduating class, we did a Solar project for our department. Solar that can power the HOD's offices and our presentation room courtesy of our Course adviser who sold this brilliant idea to us.

Thou I know departments like Geology have been off the grid. I think they have a massive solar system too.

If other departments can follow suit this will drastically reduce the energy load needed to be supplied.

Way to go.

God Bless UNIBEN
God Bless Edo State
God Bless Nigeria.

Funny things about Nigerian Federal Universities (State Uni may claim they are under funded by the state government)

1. Almost all of them has dam but can generate electricity yet they have thousands of publications on hydropower.

2. They produce (on average 1000) Engineer every year with hundred of first class yet none has ever come up with idea of self hydropower generation
3. Hundred of projects (Practical base) on how electric can be generated but too scare to put up to for trial in their environment
4. They received millions each year from tetfund et al but all these money can only go to construction of unless Halls and share the with contractor the balance but never think of innovative project

God heal Naija
