Fix the flaws with the electoral law not just this for local government.

Nigeria will be totally finished with a state police...the damage governors are doing with state electoral commission is just a tea party.

Just look at Rivers State. The AGF is absolutely right. INEC should conduct all the elections in this country. The worst abusers of power in Nigeria are the useless governors, even the clueless ones like Fubara in Rivers State, who is planning to appoint illegal caretaker chairmen.

The same way he sued the 36 governors, he should pile up an executive bill to the national assembly to tinker on different sections that empowers the governors to control the local government areas. Until the lacuna is removed, even if Fagbemi becomes governor today he will likewise practice the same way these governors are doing.
His state governor has been at he helm of affairs for almost 5 years and he has not conducted local government election till date. He should just try and do the needful than singing like crying bird. For now the law favours the governors. That law that favours them, let it be removed by the national assembly and he should also rally the state assemblies because that is where such bills are always killed.

Anyone with respect for the constitution who assumes office as a governor, will do the right thing. The constitution is clear on elected local government chairmen running the local government. The governors are aware of this but simply choose to engage in this unconstitutional practice because they are power drunk and fantastically corrupt. That is why they interfere in the activities of the state electoral commission.

Has any President of Nigeria ever suspended the conduct of the governorship election in any state and then proceeded to appoint a caretaker governor? Is that what you want? Nigerian governors are one of the major problems of Nigeria. So those of you supporting them should get ready for caretaker governors because that is my advice to the Federal Government.

Imagine if the president routinely prevents INEC from conducting a governorship election and keeps elongating the tenure of an expired governor??

What do you call the presidential election conducted by INEC? Is it any better than what is obtainable at State levels?

Yes and that is the reason Local government level is non productive. It's use to be serious election at chairmanship level in the past, these help them to know Thier responsibilities and performed well.

This is aptly submitted by AGF. Existence of SIEC has been a major impediment for the independence of Local Government.

Or dissolving a State Executive Council and appointing a caretaker committee and Sole Administrator for a State? That would be anti-democractoc and smart of dictatorship. Yet that and more is what State Governors are doing to the Local Government Areas.

A State Governor in Nigeria is a dictator because the House of Assembly which is the democratic check on his excesses is just a puppet in his hands. Tell me one sngle State in Nigeria that the Governor doesn't control the House of Assembly? None.

A State Governor can even pass anti-people legislation and the House of Assembly will not blink twice. Examples are the bills and laws mandating retirement benefits for Governors and their Deputies. No House of Assembly genuinely representing the people will ever pass those kind of self-serving and anti-people laws.

This is purely emotional outburst. I have grown to have known the vibrancy of local government activities during 1999-2003 era.
The AGF clearly stated where the problem lies, that is, a section of the constitution that gave leverage to the state governors to have control over the local government areas affairs but you are feigned ignorance of it. Until that section is modified, th governors will continue to leverage on that and your kind will continue to cry from now till kingdom comes. This is simple logic and the issue on ground cannot be compare to hijacking of the state government affairs as done to the local government area affairs by anybody.
Please try and apply common sense and stop being emotional about this. I don't give life to the shenanigans of state governor hijacking the affairs of the local government but issue must be placed as it ought to be. Talking from now till tomorrow won't change anything, except the constitution is tinker on.
