The Sierra Leone Civil War (1991–2002), or the Sierra Leonean Civil War, was a civil war in Sierra Leone that began on 23 March 1991 when the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), with support from the special forces of Liberian dictator Charles Taylor's National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL), intervened in Sierra Leone in an attempt to overthrow the Joseph Momoh government. The resulting civil war lasted almost 11 years, and had up to 70,000 casualties;an estimated 2.5 million people were displaced during the conflict.

Sierra Leone, June 1998

I could be mistaken but this Colonel surely looks to me like the incumbent Etsu Nupe, Brig Gen Yaya Abubakar (rtd)

For one, he was a 14RC armoured corps officer and saw ECOMOG action.

Again, there was quite some armour on display here in his AoR

That was when men were in the military. men with passion for the job.

now we have majority of those that entered soldier bc they dont have job and their uncle na oga for army not bc they hve the passion for it.

Thats why our military has turned to cry-babies in the north and cant dislodge rag-tag gun totting insurgents, killer headsmen and kidnappers.

COMRADES, ECOMOG, Nigeria in particular played a significant role in that war, except that, according to the documentary I watched on Aljazeera there ware some cases of human rights abuses committed by the Nigerian army

grin When I wanted to join the Nigerian Navy, then i was on my 2nd year in the university. It was all about passion and dedication to save in the Nigerian Armed Forces. I was swimming superfluously and not driven by lack of job to be a soldier.

After taking the NDA exam in Port Harcourt at a naval base, my name didn't appear when the results were published. I said ok, let me continue with my education.

Today, I feel happy about not been enlisted in the Navy considering how the Nigerian Govt made mess of the Armed Forces.

A friend of mine in the Navy told me some Naval officer don't even know how to swim. I was shocked to the marrow cos that should be the first requirement to be an officer of the Nigerian Navy. This is mediocrity at best.

It's a shame seeing soldiers extort money from motorists and engage in fuel bunkering.

Stop talking rubbish.

The Nigerian military is even MORE powerful today, with better training, and more and better weapons.

They can never be as effective fighting an internal terrorist group in Nigeria for the simple reason that their ‘success’ in that depends on the amount of damage they can cause within the country, making it a terrible dilemma, which prevents them from exercising their full strength and armoury on the terrorists/bandits etc.

Send them out to fight a foreign war where there are no such restraints, and you will see they’re a fearsome fighting force.

You are right. That is why the US did not defeat Taliban even after 20 years in Afghanistan. To fight terrorist is not child's play because you cannot identify one by just mere appearance
