That was when men were in the military. men with passion for the job.

now we have majority of those that entered soldier bc they dont have job and their uncle na oga for army not bc they hve the passion for it.

Thats why our military has turned to cry-babies in the north and cant dislodge rag-tag gun totting insurgents, killer headsmen and kidnappers.
Endemic corruption and nepotism has really finished the nigerian military.

You don't know know what you are talking about.

Did America destroy the terrorists in Iraq? Has Israel destroyed Hamas? Did Russia not leave Afghanistan in disgrace?

Fighting hit and run terrorists is a far different cry to fighting people who want to hold territory.

The Nigerian armed forces is far more lethal today. You can't even compare the two eras.
Abeg Shûût up. Wic lethal? The buffoons mounting roadblocks to collect 100 Naira from motorist ? U funny gan.
Military men between 1960-2000 would have topple governments we had between 2015 till date.

We got no military. All we have are soldiers tryin to survive

During the military erra, no one messed with the Nigerian army until democratic government took over which was and still ruined with corruption.

A relative of mine of about 26 years old was drafted for this war and it was a celebration galore when he came back alive.
Watched a documentary on the war, it was done mostly with hidden camera, mehn the kind atrocities wey our men commit really got me ashamed. I had to call my dad to come and join in watching. So many young men executed in cold blood with their hands tied behind their back some of execution caught on live camera.

grin When I wanted to join the Nigerian Navy, then i was on my 2nd year in the university. It was all about passion and dedication to save in the Nigerian Armed Forces. I was swimming superfluously and not driven by lack of job to be a soldier.

After taking the NDA exam in Port Harcourt at a naval base, my name didn't appear when the results were published. I said ok, let me continue with my education.

Today, I feel happy about not been enlisted in the Navy considering how the Nigerian Govt made mess of the Armed Forces.

A friend of mine in the Navy told me some Naval officer don't even know how to swim. I was shocked to the marrow cos that should be the first requirement to be an officer of the Nigerian Navy. This is mediocrity at best.

It's a shame seeing soldiers extort money from motorists and engage in fuel bunkering.
I sympathize with you on not making it to NDA and subsequently to the Navy. Let me however, CLARIFY that SWIMMING is good for everybody because it will save you if you find yourself in a situation where you have to swim. SWIMMIMG however, is not a recruitment prerequisite into the NDA or the Navy. The Navy will train you to stay AFLOAT and not to swim....even though swimming will be an added advantage to you but you're not going into the Navy to prepare you for the Olympics.. grin
The irony is that, even during the Nigerian armed forces games the Army win most of the gold and Silver Medals ahead of the the Navy and Airforce...please go and check cheesy
The Navy has so many areas of specializations that will scarcely require you to be on a boat patrol without life jackets ...if you serve on board a naval vessel, you will get used to participating in drills that will require you to put on a life jacket and learn to disembark through a life boat in serous cases where the ship is under threat of capsizing or taking in water...and even if you will be work in a base with Jetty it is Mandatory that you wear a life-Vest...clear now? cheesy

This war is different, guerrilla warfare has been a pain in the ass for any military right from time Immemorial.

Nigeria army in that war was a brutish one, so many innocent young cut down hands tied behind their back. They applied same tactics in Nigeria but it is no longer working, wasting innocent young men will on draw sympathy for the enemy.

Where is the place of the late Major General Maxwell Khobe? The man was the hero of the Liberia expedition. Meanwhile, this is the same Nigeria Army being routed by Boko Haram today?
I think his highest rank for Brig-Gen. He was a "hero" in S Leone, not Liberia. Meanwhile, I don't think our army was above average fighting force, even then. A lot of work needs to be done on the army. Obasanjo tried to start the process, but he didn't achieve much.

Maybe, but a lot of them may be those who were ruthless to their own people in the name of war. Some were amputating arms of their opponents. Without ECOMOG, more damage would have been done.

Younger Nigerians were drafted to fight this war and that of Sierra Leone. When our military was still reckoned and very professional . Not now that it has been turned to a charade.
