I think it is a sign of great changes...
Some people especially the older generation believed the Arise O Compatriots anthem (old) brought a curse on Nigeria...

One thing we can't take away from Tinubu is his boldness... Call him stupid, slowpoke, etc.

I would rather follow the bold than those trying to please the crowds...

It tells me there is something He is seeing, there is something he wants to get at and he wants Nigeria and Nigerians to see...

Our banner shall be a symbol that peace and justice reign... To hand to our children a banner without stain. (powerful Anthem)
To build a nation where no one is oppressed.

Elderly persons loved the old anthem because that was what they were first used to before switching to the new one. At times, switching to something new you have to learn can be challenging. Tell me, how many of the elderly ones can recite the new anthem. This answer is few because they didn't want to switch.

Placed side by side, the new anthem is by far superior to the old one, in terms of content and composition and Nigeria' current realities.

It talks about the sacrifices of past heroes, it calls for service, it addresses the youth, it asks help from Gof and talks about unity
Which sacrifice of past heroes. An anthem that wants to erode identity, not showing the diverse realities we have as a nation.

You can see a military wash paint all over it. Nigeria's call obey....it's like a force anyway, come and do what you don't want to do.

It's not today I have been hearing primary and secondary schools students say,

"To serve Nigeria is not by force". Where did that come from?

From the anthem, of course. Meaning there is something about it that reeks "compulsion".

Bro the Arise O Compatriots was once our national symbol. The fact that I prefer the Nigeria we hail thee, does not mean I should disrespect that symbol of Nigeria...

The labour of our heroes past shall never be in vain... Is a powerful clause

Yes, it is perfectly rational to choose a colonial anthem over a perfect one composed by a citizen in the midst of an economic crisis. APC certainly attracts some types of people. Oya be singing it up and down the streets.

Also, don't forget to teach it to people who can't afford three square meals and tell them to sing it whenever they're hungry to summon food from thin air. Iranu

If you're defending colonial masters who came to enslave your people, rape your land to develop theirs and gave you anthems to enforce their territorial theft of your land.

If not that you're a mental slave, you should be repulsed at the very thought of a colonial anthem that was discriminatory to your kind.
You don't deserve and freedom or independence cause you're a disgrace to free living!!

Heroes are subjective. There are past heroes who stood for something clandestine and wicked, and they are heroes to some people too. Hence, their labour should also not be in vain. No wonder this country is whatever goes.

It is not just annoying the nonsense these people are doing, seeing young people defending this course, especially on nairaland that you think it's a forum for the intellectuals is really disturbing.
So pathetic.
My brother, I actually come to this forum with the intention of posting comments that could shine the light for our younger ones but lately, I'm thinking that's a fruitless cause.

It's a waste of time. So sad.

Are you telling me Nigeria doesn't have heroes? Some people fought for our independence. Some people built our nation's industries, education, sports and many more. I don't want to mention military so that you will not say it is about military.

The old anthem also talks service.

You are the liar.

In the news you shared, there was no where it was stated that Egbe Omo Oduduwa was the one getting the signatures.

The AG mentioned in the paper is for a different reason. Dailyservice newspaper has more Nigerian outlook before they later joined the Action group at a later year. The paper just made mention of people getting signature. People could be anybody, it could be Ibo, Yoruba, or Hausa part of the populace who have mixed feeling about the lady composing the anthem for the new country.

Also that paper is somewhere before October 1960, so how does Obasanjo come into the picture then and why is this a proof to backup your argument?

You are definitely mixing up HEROES and VILLAINS...
Were you fortunate enough to read comics when you were younger? If not just google DC heroes and villains. They are both powerful but one uses it power for good, defending the weak, fighting for justice. They usually have a code of conduct creed they always confess and say (Check Green lantern). These are called Heroes...

While Villain use their powers for evil...

Check my post you quoted, I never denied they later acquired by Action group.

What Daily Service just did is some people critiquing the national anthem as we have in all countries. That is why it stated in the report that they attempted to gather signatures among people which never amounted to anything meaningful either ways because we still used the anthem for over 18years after that.

I don't even know why this strawman argument affect the topic of discourse. Your lame attempt at labeling the anthem a colonial anthem fell down flat and you're clutching at straws and looking for few people that critique the anthem. That same anthem was blasted in Ibadan on democracy day where all the people sang it with pride for the new nation. So where exactly did the Yoruba people told you we reached a resolution to reject it?

It is not an ibo man that will tell me about my Yoruba patriotism, I know that myself and I know my ancestral link and our contribution to Yoruba capital Ibadan. No be you go tell me who I be.

The anthem was a colonial anthem. It was given when the British were still in charge of Nigeria and throughout West Africa, only Nigeria and Niger had national anthems given by foreigners. I've asked you to explain the situation that made the two winners of both categories British. You can't.
You don't know jack. Egbe omo Oduduwa is the parent body of Action Group. That the SW AC wanted June 12 declared as democracy day did not stop May 29 remaining as democracy day for 18 years until it became politically expedient for a sitting president to grant that request. Will you be so naive to say Buhari was pro-Yoruba or in love with MKO that's why he changed democracy day to June 12 in 2018?
If the opposition was not widespread, Daily Service will not be gathering signatures. And Daily Service was not acquired by Action Group. They always belonged to Egbe Omo Oduduwa

Lol. Don't mind that clown
He's defending a British anthem against a Nigerian anthem yet claims to love Nigeria.
He's just a numbskull.
Every country that was given national anthem by their colonial masters changed it with Niger being the latest in 2023 while Nigeria is going back to colonial anthem in 2024.
Shameful I must say.
Tinubu's Pan-African credentials is looking bleeped!!

Yeah. Even animals in your tribe couldn't find anything tangible in dustbins. So, they are looking elsewhere. That's how impoverished people of your tribe are.

My brother, I see the anger in your writeup. I know you are angry, I feel the frustration Nigeria has brought on us. I feel the heartache when Nigeria comes up...

My prayer is that God would help you build great things in life and handover something great to your children and children's children.

You will not be replaced, God will help you to get it right my brother...

If you said amen or liked this my prayer for you, then it is not stupidity to pray that the God of all creation should grant this our one request, to help us, direct us, to build a nation where no man is oppressed...
You see how quick it was to pass National anthem that does no good to us and how they’re playing with lives of Nigeria and you still think this country, even God don tire for us.
