I think there is a slight miscommunication on the issue. NDIC is playing a dual role here. One it will pay up on deposits below a certain threshold. But also it will sell the assets of the bank and use the proceeds to pay any remaining creditors or deposit holders.

CBN can't afford to allow any bank fail to the point where depositors will lose a part or whole of their funds. It will step in to save the day.

Sometimes because of perks associated with banking with them.


Top management persons in major control of finance in government tend to use these mushroom banks because of the reward systems they attach to entice people to use their banking services.

Eg. Even governors do this (like Ex governor of Benue Ortom) such bank’s approach them to do banking for the state in various sectors and in return they do deals to give back a particular percentage to the Governor.

This is not limited to governors, Permanent secretaries, directors of top companies etc…

Many use these banks because they get many advantages of banking without following due process.

at the end, it wouldn’t surprise me why many of them end up folding up.

The NDIC will likely make an announcement either in the papers or by your email. And sorry I have no idea exactly how long it would take but one or two months would be my best quest.

I only know the story of Oceanic.

CBN forced change of ownership because Cecilia Ibru (The CEO) who’s husband owned the bank was guilty of fraud and severe mismanagement.

To the point that the bank was rolling on fake figures.

I remember she was sentenced to 6 years in prison.
In fact the saga made them have serious financial challenge and they also lost their Airline.

That Ibru family get K leg. Imagine Cecilia is the second wife. her twin sister is the first wife.

She was in charge of many of the family properties and was busy embezzling and spending as she liked at the expense if the bank customers without them knowing until EFCC busted her.

I am sure the husband knew and kept a blind eye to it.
