US museum Dead Sea Scroll collection found to be fakes

A collection of supposedly valuable Dead Sea Scroll fragments on display at the Museum of the Bible in Washington DC has been found to be fake.

After six months of analysis, experts released a 200-page report detailing how the fragments were forged - likely made from old shoe leather.
"Each exhibits characteristics that suggest they are deliberate forgeries," the analysts said in a statement.
The scrolls are a set of ancient manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible.
The first of the scrolls were found in caves in Qumran on the western shore of the Dead Sea in 1947. They were reportedly first discovered by a young Bedouin shepherd searching for lost sheep. Their discovery is considered to be among the most significant archaeological finds in history.

Israeli military analyst Yoav Zeitoun from Yedioth Ahronoth warns that if the northern front escalates with Lebanon, Israel could face a level of firepower unprecedented in its history. This could include precise missile barrages targeting strategic locations such as Air Force and Army bases in the north and center of the country, as well as heavy missile strikes on settlements and military installations throughout the northern region. According to Major Ofir Yehezkel, an official from the Kiryat Shmona municipality and a resident of the city, severe damage has been inflicted on all settlements near the border with Lebanon. Dozens of homes in Kiryat Shmona have been directly affected, with some estimates indicating hundreds of homes damaged.

Yehezkel explains, "We are a city of 25,000 people. Most residents have been evacuated, and we estimate that between 2,500 and 2,000 civilians remain. Some residents initially sought refuge in hotel rooms but eventually returned to the city. However, due to the heavy missile barrage, some have been forced to leave again. Each damaged house affects five others around it."

The situation is dire, with the possibility that residents may not be able to return until September, impacting the academic year. Unlike kibbutzim and moshavim, the population of Kiryat Shmona is dispersed across 240 hotels throughout the country, leading to a sense of community collapse.
