The subject of tithing is getting more controversial as each day passes by. Most churches teach and practice it while quite a few condemns it. Those who condemn it use the excuse that Jesus and his Apostles didn't instruct the present day church to do it. And they are very correct. But they don't know why Jesus didn't emphasise it nor his disciples. This is my focus in this article. By the time I am through, you will be begging God to receive your tithe. The main reason Jesus didn't emphasise tithe payment is because its far below what he wants us to do. Jesus wants us to be solely dependent on God as our source. He wants to take us to new realm of life where only God is the one we depend and lean on to provide all of our needs and not our salary. So, Jesus doesn't ask you to give 10%. He wants us to give 100%. If those attacking tithe payment are reluctant to pay tithe, can they give away all that they have to help the poor? The answer is certainly no. What are the scripture references that affirms that Jesus demand is 100% and not 10%? In Marks gospel, a young rich ruler had an encounter with Jesus. And he asked Jesus what he should do to inherit eternal life. Jesus said he should keep or obey the commandments of God. He said he has done all that from his youth. Then, Jesus said to him; Mark 10:21 One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. Does this look like 10% to you. Certainly not. Jesus asked the man to empty his account and even sell all his assets. This is giving away 100% of what you have. Can those people condemning tithe give away 100% to help the poor? They can't even give away 1%. And you can't stand on the fence. You condemn tithe because Jesus didn't say much about it. Then, practise the one he talked about. The verse above is rendered thus in the International Standard Version; Mark 10:21. Jesus looked at him and loved him. Then he told him, “You’re missing one thing. Go and sell everything you own, give the money to the destitute, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come back and follow me.” Oh, he was only talking to the rich man you might want to argue. But he also gave the instruction to everyone in Luke 12:33 which reads; "Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth." The early Church practised it on two recorded occasions- Acts 4:43-47 & Acts 4:34-37 Tithing is the minimum requirement of the demonstration of your faith. As you faithfully do it, his grace upon your life will increase so you can give more. My only advice to Pastors of churches and ministry is to set aside part of the tithe and help the poor. Anything less than this is wickedness. |

Phranx1:The subject is tithe. My point is that those condemning it should practice what Jesus taught about giving. And those who receive it should review how they administer it. Both parties have flaws |

Giving out all is a one time in a lifetime move not continues, even the apotles once did as they sold off all for the good of others. |

Ken4Christ:lies, that's not what they say. Those who condemn it are saying that tithing was a practice of another religion entirely, not Christianity. Another religion entirely in the sense that the old testament where tithing was practiced was Judaism and not Christianity. And that even the current day people who still practice judaism do not practice tithing anymore and they are one of the most successful people on earth currently. And that the practice portray people in church to be a gathering of a very foolish and myopic people who lack scriptural understanding thus willingly allowing themselves to be used and scammed. So tithing in church is scam I don't know why Africans like suffering themselves for nothing. If you want to give to the church why not give according to what you have with a willing heart?

Ken4Christ:WRONG! When God called the Israelites out of Egypt He promised to take them to a place where they will be established as an independent nation and secure them so that no nation no matter how mighty can make them to tremble! Exodus 29:45 He also said they will become a nation of priests {Exodus 19:6} so there will be sacrifices and other sacred deeds among these people therefore God told them that the inheritance should be shared among all the tribes except one tribe: LEVITES! Numbers 18:20 So when sharing the inheritance of Israel Levites were exempted and God commanded the rest of their brothers that is the remaining children of Jacob to make use of their own inheritance then after they've realized gain they should divide their gain into ten parts and bring one out of the ten for the Levites in the Tabernacle! Deuteronomy 14:26 This means it's not tenth part of what they were given that they are to bring rather it's the tenth part of what they gain! The Levites also must pay tithes and who are to benefit from these? It's the orphans, widows and stranded travelers in Israel so the orphans, widows and stranded travelers are completely exempted from paying of tithes as they are on the receiving end. Deuteronomy 14:29 This is what the Israelites continue with until they were captured and taken into exile in Babylon but when God brought back the Jews to their land pure worship was restored and what happened? Most Jews don't want to pay the tithes anymore they felt since the nation has been conquered and they're no longer with the rest of the ten tribes it's no longer reasonable to go paying tithes in the rebuilt temple. Nehemiah 13:10 That's why God sent Malachi to remind them that it's because of pure worship that He brought them back to the promised land and they are robbing Him if they stop paying tithe as Levites wouldn't have food to eat neither would orphans, widows or stranded travelers! Malachi 3:6-11 So is tithe paying required after the religion of the Jews has been discarded? Since the temple was destroyed in the year 70.c.e the duties of Levites ended and their services (slaughtering animals, burning incense and other things) is no longer required so there's no reason for worshipers of God to pay tithe again because what Christians practice today has nothing to do with sacrifices or burning of incense with is the primary reason the tithe was instituted! Hebrews 7:5-12 Thank you, God bless you and may you have PEACE! ![]() |

MaxInDHouse:Tithing didn't start with the Law of Moses. Abraham paid tithe several years before the Law of Moses was given. Jacob, his grandson vowed to give God a tenth of what he receives. He didn't limit it to gains. So, the church pays tithe because Abraham, our father of faith did. And the scripture says that we should walk in the footsteps of Abraham. |
| Re: Why Jesus Didn't Talk Much About Tithing. by Ken4Christ(op): 6:42pm On Jun 04, 2024 |
paxonel:Christianity has its link with Abraham because that is where the promise started from. God told Abraham that he will bless the nations of the world through his seed which is Christ. The nation of Israel are also the physical descendents of Abraham. So, Christianity and Judaism has something in common. We use the same Old Testament. But the coming of Jesus has made us one. |

Ken4Christ:So it's when God announced to the Israelites that tithing became official among worshipers of the true God not when Abraham paid that's why his descendants never practiced it until it was incorporated into the laws given to them. But those laws includes animal sacrifices and burning of incense so do you still make animal sacrifices and incense burning today? If you don't then all such practices has ended with the old covenant! Hebrews 7:11-12 |
| Re: Why Jesus Didn't Talk Much About Tithing. by Ken4Christ(op): 5:47am On Jun 05, 2024 |
MaxInDHouse:We give our tithes not based on the law of Moses but based on principles. This is not even my point. My point is those who say that tithe ended with the law should practice what Jesus taught. Jesus said that we should sell our assets and give to the poor. This is more than 10%. To the young rich ruler, he aaked him to sell everything. This is giving 100%. So tithing is just a child's play compared to what Jesus demands of us. So, you must do one of them. And we know that 10% is much easier than giving away 100%. You can't decide to give nothing. You must give something. The minimum is 10%. If you can't do that, you are a thief and a robber. You are overly stingy and you will die in poverty. Giving opens opportunities for more blessings. The more you give, the more chances of getting blessed. |
| Re: Why Jesus Didn't Talk Much About Tithing. by MaxInDHouse(m): 8:09am On Jun 05, 2024 |
Ken4Christ:You're getting it all wrong! How many of his disciples sold everything they had? The man wanted to become part of those who will rule with Jesus in heaven so Jesus told him to sell everything he had and give to the poor. Who are the poor? Jesus said: "Blessed are the poor (in spirit) for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" Matthew 5:3 The poor in spirit are Jesus' anointed brothers who were given the task to gather faithful and obedient humans throughout the earth this people are poor in that the assignment is really weighty therefore they need the support of humans physically, materially, emotionally and spiritually to succeed in their assignments {Matthew 25:34-40} so if anyone wants to do what Jesus told that man he or she will give away whatever he had to support Jesus' anointed brothers and such a person will have treasures in heaven! Matthew 6:19-21 For instance there are Christians in the first century who gave up their businesses or jobs to join Jesus' disciples and become lifetime pioneers like Paul, today many are also doing the same by willing all their properties to the Watchtower and becoming preachers and teachers from house to house doing the work of God's kingdom. Some had shares in big companies they also willed all their benefits to Watchtower that's what some Ex-jws noticed but instead of them to ask why these people are doing so they started looking for ways to discredit God's organization claiming that the Watchtower invested in weapon production whereas it's the primary investor who gave up his shares to support the kingdom work. So if you hear that Jehovah's Witnesses are the richest organization on planet earth don't be surprised none of our leaders has any property worth being noted everything belongs to Jesus who is working with his true disciples in this endtime! Matthew 28:20 Do we practice tithing to make this work? NO! |
| Re: Why Jesus Didn't Talk Much About Tithing. by Ken4Christ(op): 10:59pm On Jun 05, 2024 |
MaxInDHouse:The disciples of Jesus forsook all to follow Jesus. So, they already made their sacrifices. The early Church sold their possession and it was shared to those in need. Jesus taught an eternal principle. His message was not just for the audience of his days. So if you don't want to practice tithing, do what Jesus instructed us to do. Period. |

| Re: Why Jesus Didn't Talk Much About Tithing. by Ken4Christ(op): 5:58am On Jun 06, 2024 |
MaxInDHouse:I agree. But they practiced what was more than tithing. Tithing is 10%. Some gave 100%. Others well above 70% of what they have. So, please start selling your assets and give to the poor. This is the new testament teaching. Luke 12:33. But if you can't do it, then begin with the 10% and gradually increase your giving over time. For those who receive tithes, my advice is that they should set apart a percentage of it and reach out to the needy and poor in their midst and around them. |

MaxInDHouse:I supported my claim with scriptures from the very lips of my Lord Jesus. And in Matthew 28:19-20, he commanded that we should go and teach everything he has commanded. And one of his commands says we should sell whatsoever we have and give to the poor. If you can't give 10%, is it selling your assets to help the poor that you will do? |
| Re: Why Jesus Didn't Talk Much About Tithing. by MaxInDHouse(m): 4:02am On Jun 07, 2024 |
Ken4Christ:Jesus didn't command us to sell our assets and give it away, the man who came to Jesus was a politician who lives a celebrity lifestyle so to become so lowly and start going to pay uninvited visits to people in his neighborhood will be difficult for him due to his social status that's what Jesus admonished him to sell away and things that may warrant him being the focus of most people when he's with fellow Christians. To fully understand try to imagine people like Goodswill Akpabio, Babajide Sanwoolu, Femi Gbajabiamila to carry Bible with another fellow Christian knocking on people's doors with the aim of preaching from house to house, do you think householders will listen to what they're preaching? Of course not! In fact residents in such areas will storm the street waiting for him to come and answer series of questions regarding how their government has failed woefully in meeting the needs of their subjects! Therefore if such a person wants to cross over from the world kingdom to God's kingdom and become part of those who will rule with Christ then he must do away with all the things that has to do with worldly kingdom along with all it's riches. That's what happened there. If it's about selling everything we have and giving to the poor as you are thinking do you think a Christian will be able to take care of his immediate family? So you're getting it all wrong. Jesus didn't command his disciples to sell everything they had that admonish is for politicians and those in governance whose lifestyle is all about celebrity that needs such not all Christians, that is why Jesus never said the same thing to others! |

Luke 12:33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. The early church did it. We're they celebrities? Leave that cult group, you will not hear. Worse is your final destination in the pit of hell. |

| Re: Why Jesus Didn't Talk Much About Tithing. by Emusan(m): 12:28pm On Jun 07, 2024 |
Ken4Christ: MaxInDHouse:These are misconceptions about Tithe and wrong interpretation of Heb 7:11-12. There's no commandment in the NT to pay Tithe simply because the commandment already be given in the OT in which Jesus Himself will fulfill, so Jesus can't just annull Tithing because it's part of His mission. Biblical consummation is how Jesus fulfilled the Hebrew scriptures in Himself that is bringing their TRUE MEANING INTO REALITY. Tithing started before the law, just as SABBATH DAY and Circumcision also are before the law and finally made it to the law. So the right question to ask will be why was Tithe included in the law? This will be a lengthy post if I should address it all but I'll just try to summarise it! From above we can see that, Tithe, Sabbath Day and Circumcision practiced before the law and accordingly the scriptures these three practices are considered 'ETERNAL PRACTICES!' I will focus on Tithe now! Jesus made a statement in Matt 23:23 “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens,[g] but you ignore the more important aspects of the law—justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things." This is not a commandment but a reference to existing law but here we can see that Jesus didn't condemn Tithe rather supported it. So, why did Tithe make it to the law? Simple answer: it's part of eternal practice like Sabbath Day and Circumcision. That is why the writer of the book of Hebrew after talking about the basic teaching about Christ says "So let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding." Heb 6:1 To go into mature teaching, the write took the silent statement of Christ in Matt 23:23 to reveal the eternal practice of Tithe. This he did by alluded to Melchizedek! "Consider then how great this Melchizedek was. Even Abraham, the great patriarch of Israel, recognized this by giving him a tenth of what he had taken in battle. Now the law of Moses required that the priests, who are descendants of Levi, must collect a tithe from the rest of the people of Israel,[a] who are also descendants of Abraham. But Melchizedek, who was not a descendant of Levi, collected a tenth from Abraham. And Melchizedek placed a blessing upon Abraham, the one who had already received the promises of God. The points here are: 1. Melchizedek is so great. 2. Abraham recognises HIS GREATNESS and that makes Abraham to give Him Tithe. 3. This act places Melchizedek a far Higher Priest who qualifies to operate as a priest and was never part of the Levi (Levi never even come on board in the first place). So, what is the correlation her? Melchizedek was considered ETERNAL HIGH PRIEST that is why the same scripture says he was made to be like THE SON OF GOD. Which means, as long as there is A PRIEST Tithing law remains. In line of this, Jesus came in ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK and Jesus became the High Priest. In conclusion: Just like other laws like Sabbath Day and Circumcision when Christ fulfill them in His body, the laws took a new dimension which means they are not view the ways they were revealed. Like Sabbath Day, we understand that it's an eternal rest for the believers and not just a worship on Saturday or any day and the physical circumcision is just a reminder of our spiritual broken hearted. Though some preachers might have laid too much emphasis on Tithe and some might have abused it and made it to be a burden to their members. Most people against Tithe didn't even know that Tithe is just like a peanut to other avenues some preachers are generating money. Heb 7:11-12 is about the law that empowers the Levites to be a Priest that needs to change since the new High Priest Jesus Christ didn't come from the Levites. |

MaxInDHouse:I've already clarified that Heb 7:1-12 Here it is again: "So if the priesthood of Levi, on which the law was based, could have achieved the perfection God intended, why did God need to establish a different priesthood, with a priest in the order of Melchizedek instead of the order of Levi and Aaron? 12 And if the priesthood is changed, the law must also be changed to permit it. 13For the priest we are talking about belongs to a different tribe, whose members have never served at the altar as priests. Why did the writer allude to Melchizedek being given Tithe by Abraham as Jesus became a Priest in the ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK? Note: Melchizedek was not portrayed as HUMAN PRIEST! |

Emusan:I thought you agreed that Jesus is the High Priest Emusan:Through whom people from other nations became members of the house of faith but obviously you don't understand so let me teach you! No high priest in Israel is equal with Jesus who entered the Most Holy (Heaven) not with the blood of animals but with his own blood to redeem mankind. Hebrews 9:12 So as the High Priest that connected gentiles to God's glorious assembly all must bow to whatever he commanded {Philippians 2:10} He didn't ask us to pay tithes so there's no reason to bring it to him but he commanded us to spend our precious times in preaching zealously and industriously teaching all the things he taught us {Matthew 10:11-13; 28:19-20} this requires time and since time is equivalent of money whoever is doing this work {John 4:34} is paying something precious to our new High Priest! |
