For an IT person to say "wide canopy of the...term server" says a lot. When I walk into a bank and they have a outage and some lay person says to me "no network", I can forgive them. But the same thing said by an IT person to another IT person is "unforgivable". There is more to hosting a website than just "server costs". But if you want to refer to the entire infrastructure and support cost as "server cost" then be my guest. And don't think when NL is hosted on a server we are talking CPanel shared hosting.
OK, i give up

This section doesn't give seun any money from Ads and AdSense.

It's practically useless to seun.

In short this place is just a trashbin

I even miss the trolls like Greatigboman and tastyfriedpussy who made here lively sometimes ago.
It is always fun when you are not on the receiving end

Lol....I'm being pedantic I know. But it's mostly because tech person speaking to tech person, we should use the right terms. Imagine a Surgeon saying they have to remove your "belly" when they mean they want to remove an appendix which is inside the "belly". You go gree make dem commot your "belly"?

I have been on Nl for about 2 months and have been active on the progamming section and even the science and tech section entirely. Here are some of my observations
1. The sections are almost entirely spam and ads. Aside from a few nlanders eg qtguru, we hardly get beneficial posts to enthusiasts, especially here on the programming sect.
2. The absence of beneficial and relevant topics on the Nl front page. The fp is just full of irrelevant and just outright stupid content. Imagine entering nl only to be greeted by one: SEE THE SOUP I MADE WITH #200 (PICS) and the worst is that nl mods promote dispute between members especially political one, it is like once any post is politics related, automatically fp material. We generally lack informative materials.
3. Sexual misconduct is praised here on nl. Imagine having a sexuality section when even to get current news on nl is a hassle
i am just tired me oh, hmm
Nlfpmod, seun, lalastica, Karleb
Well... I've been on Nairaland on and off since 2018 or so with different accounts (which I disable most)

And every section is just the same.
Rubbish contents, outdated website.

I'm sorry but you're like the 1000th person to make this observation...

I think Nairaland ventured from a passion to a business.

As long as the business is moving, Seun doesn't really care what we think.

And there are also some people who take this place and all it's good and bad as home, so no matter how bad it gets, they won't abandon it.

Hmm, welcome to the club.
Re: My Nairaland Observation by PulsingPurple(m): 11:11pm On Jun 04, 2024
danielclerkson:
But if the mods and seun actually listened to the users, things would have been much better
Exactly. One thing with older people is that we can't accept change.

The same way an old man loves his good ol' reggae music and local food is the same way Seun loves his good ol' perfect Nairaland interface and will do nothing to change it.

. Call me a conspiracy theorist but i think alot of the so called hostility is promoted by seun and mods because why will you be pushing hostile prone content ( eg APC VS PDP) knowing fully well that it can cause, to the fp
I saw a post mocking Catholic churches being pushed to FP.
Another post where a Muslim was asking if Allah permits them to use POS was pushed to FP, and bear in mind that only Muslims can comment there...

Omorr...

Ahh... First of all, to hell with these green janky-looking emojis 😂 ( cheesy & co.)

This BBCode used to edit text should be made to show results in real time. I'm tired of seeing people make mistakes because they used the BBCode wrongly and didn't realize before submitting

Work on these spam bots, they just randomly block people for minor things (I remember getting blocked for trying to post a picture from URL) and other random stuff.

There should be better ways to sign in na, like Google or Apple

The website should just switch to a modern design, like Quora.

Revamp the moderating.

Just make take lessons from Quora, Discord, Reddit combined.

Not really maybe, just maybe being intentional about innovation.
Cos money can solve most of these things, not like he needs community help

I think those green emojis in particular are imported from a certain library that was popular back then... Cos I've seen them on other websites too.

I presented open sourcing as the most realistic plan because can seun actually release money for this

When I was coding, all these fancy Frontend/Backend dichotomy hadn't taken strong hold. So our emphasis was to write up code that fully implemented business logic. That was core and critical. "Pretty" frontend were far from our minds. In fact there was a course we did called Human-Computer Interaction which I totally hated.

What's wrong about the UI? It's not "flashy" yes, but what would you rather have? Flashy UI with no content as all the other pretenders to NL's throne or "outdated UI" with loads of content whether good or bad. I will always pick function over flashy. Can the UI be better? Of course? Can I make it better? No. Can I live with it as it is? Yes.

And NL doesn't have to do anything at the moment. They are effectively a monopoly. And until there is competition, there won't be much change to the UI.

So it is widely believed that Nairaland started of with SMF forum script. While most of the current UI hasn't changed much from the early days, it is also widely rumored that the forum was migrated to Python.

And NL doesn't need to share their source codes with anyone. It's now proprietary and has become Intellectual property.

Nairaland is PHP and still remains PHP, nairaland is a heavily modified clone of discourse

I won't argue about whether it is still based on PHP. However it is definitely NOT a discourse clone. Nairaland started in 2006. Discourse wasn't founded until 7 years later. Besides I've been on too many discourse and discourse clones to know that the UI for NL is completely different from that of discourse. Discourse was built with Javascript and RoR.

Nairaland is not discourse by the way it just needs new features and bots here or there

Duly noted boss

I'm not saying that they should share it, I'm just noting that apart from the fact that they are not willing to share, they don't also intend to see anything being mentioned about it. They don't want to risk allowing such post on their forum.
That's to say they are making a deliberate effort as well to keep things in check.

Dare I suggest that you're here to oppose (my) opinions?

Pls hear me out as well...
I'm not taking any side, I'm just stating my observations mostly. So I agree with you as well.

Functionality over design is also something I've considered as a major role in Nairaland's stagnancy
I feel Seun has seen potential problems that might come with certain changes he may want to make.

Take note also, updating to a 'flashy' design won't make Nairaland become dormant and staying with this UI doesn't guarantee more posts.
Check the evolution of Facebook?

Unlike you, I think I prioritize quality over quantity...
Me saying 'Modern Design' doesn't imply 'flashy'.
