Starzo:Read it again. He said that when people were depositing the old currency notes that the Igbos had, so they can exchange them for the new currency notes, he noticed that the bank officials were not counting the money. So if an Igbo person brings ten thousand pound of the old money to open an account, the bank will open the account with 20 pounds instead 10 thousand. The bank will eventually pay the account holder only 20 pounds of the new money. What he did was legal. He opened 20 bank accounts and distributed his entire life savings across the 20 accounts. He ended up getting only 20 pounds from each account, as against his entire life savings. This is one evil metted out to the Igbo. However, like Phoenix, they rose to become the most successful and most enterprising ethnic group in Africa. |

Greenfaces:Mumu, u do not understand him....den only 20pounds were given to anyone who had dated much or above in the bank..so him.having alot of money which is about to b useless to him...he found 28 person which a bank account or even any hope of having money in the account if opened for them...he opened with their identity, lodged in his money which in turn was made worthless and then 20pounds was paid back to owners of the accts as a compensation... So because he owns the funds they withdrew for him ndhe settled the a Lil token then continued his life |

Starzo:He simply used his sharp Igbo sense to recover some of his money. Awolowo was given out 20 pounds only to every Biafran. What if he had more than 5000 pounds in his account then. Blame it on AWO. |

Greenfaces:The writer of this story is mischievous. He couldn't have created empty account. He created multiple accounts which kept money in all them. Because he felt if he keeps all his money in one account, they will give him only ₦20 for all the money. The writer left story hanging |

G U O my brother, though the system was unjust by depriving people of their real money worth even after mouthing 'no victor, no vanquished'. You must understand that two wrongs cannot make a right, so that aspect of opening multiple accounts is wrong, and I hope you see it so and teach the youths so. That you mentioned it, shows you're honest and trustworthy which explains why you built a very solid system. Keep winning. |

Personally they shouldn't have been paid a dime. All those with their pass book got paid all their money only those that can prove how much was in their account were paid the 20 Pound which should never have been the case. Once you are unable to provide the passbook you should forfeit the funds in the acct automatically since there was no prove ascertaining you had any money in the account n I can authoritatively tell you all the Igbos back then put together had no single Kobo in their account against your foolish claim of them having more than the 20 pounds. Nowhere in the history of human kind as money been paid to anyone because you lost evidence to prove you own an account or can not prove how much you had in such account. I have read extensively n I know for a fact igbos that could not proof they had any money in their account did not deserve that 20 pounds given to them. Henix: |

This is purely a spoilt rich man pikin who was into yahoo then, and took advantage of the failed system to enrich himself at the detriment of poor populace. |

Haaa Nairaland with interesting reasoning! There's too much bias being read to what was written up here to say/imply lots of what was not mentioned. went from N580 to 1m in a few years gbam! (selling to people with only N20 trying to rebuild their lives after a war. Where was the purchasing power from if he only traded in the East?) without judging or assuming outside what's written here, it is rational to say the story is not complete still - just a balanced observation. Again from what's up here, the guy admitted he played a fast one (he was not getting Naira for Naira, so it doesn't matter if it was zero account or not. The cash he puts in the opened accounts was money he & nobody wanted or could use again is the point) no need for arguments. He was also opportunistic, over-billing war ravaged folks for the 1pound because of higher demand than supply. There was a war (that always come with loses), Biafran currency was introduced - the same liquidated after the war because there simply was no where to spend or legally exchange it anymore. The nation that issued it was no more! The loss started when their Naira holdings were turned to Biafran currency. No fault of FG or Awolowo or any other person. - folks that kept Naira or even foreign accounts and were still alive resumed their accounts. (Let's be careful when instigating fights and wars. Ask/think what happens if I/we lose) It was not a case of stealing their money as folks are twisting the history. The SW abounds with stories of people that never left (and yes, it was not generally same in the North where properties were looted and burnt. The killings that started it all was in the North rem) and those that came back to their properties, even getting accumulated rents with. @Cars - btw N3000-4000 in 1974, lots of owners were civil servants thru car loans then. Others got the best motorcycle for 320-420 and bicycles for 18pounds. Nigeria was good and You don't have to be super rich like folks are pushing narratives here. In all, he worked hard. He travelled out. He came back and played hard in the transport sector. Congrats on his new age. |
