Just yesterday, I was talking about starting to crossbreed various heritage chickens with local hen and broiler parents. We called several sources to see where we could get these breeds, and we discovered that none of them had 100% pure breeds. I strongly believe that to buy a 100% Fulani breed, one must travel to a genuine Fulani village with no other breeds present. Let's see. I am planning to import pure 100% breeds since it is Gulder Ultimate Search in Nigeria. And I am not sure of what I will get.


I like your project, and anyone who is into local chickens and noiler will definitely be interested in what you are doing.

Attached are the ones I am interested in getting. They will make excellent crossbreeds with the available local breeds here.

Finally, I do not believe we have any good F2 generation Noilers available. Honestly, we don't. The day-old chicks sold are not pure F2 chicks. I am not particularly interested in noiler, but just saying.

What is Local Chicken Farming?
Local chicken farming is a type of farm practice that involves rearing local chickens, or indigenous chickens either for the purpose of egg production, meat production, or even feathers in some situations.

The benefit of Local Chicken Farming

* They can survive in harsh weather condition
Local chickens are rugged and have the tendency of withstanding and thriving under very harsh weather conditions.

* The little fund is required
70% of the cost of rearing hybrid chickens is mostly spent on buying chicken feed, but this is not so in local poultry farming because only a little supplement of feed is mostly required.

* Management process is less stressful
In local chicken farming, the management system is not too technical and less tiring, unlike hybrid chicken farming that requires a lot of technical expertise to start up.

* They are immune to diseases
As a result of local chickens having a very strong immune system, they are mostly immune to diseases and don't fall sick easily

...but you haven't told us the Number of Eggs to expect Weekly or Monthly

Neither did you tell us Ratio of Feed to Egg or Meat conversion.

Most things, (if not all) CONs you listed about the hybrid/foreign breeds, equally applies to the local breed. If you have Isa-Brown for example and don't wanna spend much on feeds, no problem but don't expect much output in terms of eggs.

You say Local breeds "can fend for themselves by grazing in the field and feeding on different kinds of insects". Same applies to all other breeds of chicken e.g isa-brown. And there are people who rear isa-brown in their backyards. They even allow them roam about. Just don't expect the high number of eggs you read about online.

Not to discourage you but you probably wont have alot of improvements because the noilers and broilers you would be using have been bred in such a way that you cant get much of genetic merit from them. If you really want to improve our breed, you need more local birds, performance data and pure lines (parent stock or grandparent stocks of broiler and noiler).

DOWNSIDE: The prototype (offsprings) don't usually give the result you have in mind before embarking on the project, this they are smaller in size compared to the parent ( cock).
Secondly, majority of the cocks are not potent enough to deliver results as hen ends up laying more stale eggs ( table eggs) than fertilized egg.
Last but not least, most of the hen ( offsprings)never go broody, even if they will do, it takes like eternity to happen.

The only good thing about them is that like the parent stocks, they combined the ruggedity and survival ability of their parents.

Another good honest contribution BUT I doubt Noiler is GMO

As you rightly said it is probably difficult to get a pure breed line.. but if you are willing to breed for it, you should get it at about F6

I am happy this about this comment. The only incorrect information is that Noiler is GMO. It isn't. One of the cocks used for noiler is among the ones I posted above. And this is the reason one should import them if one wants to be sure of getting a full real breed because Nigerians are so dishonest. I laugh at people who incubate noiler eggs. It is why the growth rate aren't that ok. I was chatting with one guy and he felt the fertilized f2 or f3 or even f4 sef eggs he is producing is extra special. I laughed inside and didn't say anything. I just made him feel like he is right so I don't offend him. Perhaps he will read this. If he does, good for him. Lol.

Thanks for not informing him so He doesn't start hiding it.

You do have a great point, apart from the GMO part which i disagree with.. there is nothing genetically modified in noiler. The right term would be genetically improved.

It's like copying an artistic drawing that was copied from someone who equally copied from someOne else who probably copied from someOne who copied from the original copy. At every statge, no matter how good the artist is, details gets missed or added.

Even pepper seeds gan sef, anything after F2 no be am again. I rather just buy FRESH pepper (not seeds due to trust issues) from market and use their seeds, than buy seeds from markets not F1 or F2 .

GMO stands for genetically modified organism.. which means actively altering the genome of an organism by knocking out or adding a new gene that was previously not inherent in the organism. example is the glowing mice. Your explanation points at heterosis and not GMO

I gat you....but the way terms are used, we should be careful. When you say tampered with in breeding, it means you extract the desired genes traits chemically and insert it into another. But when you allow nature to do its thing, you won't say that genes are tampered with... even though technically, genes are modified. Just like humans. When a Caucasian sleeps with a Latino or black, then what we call hybrid in plants is produced. Even with IVF, which is also an equivalent of AI (artificial insemination), the whole sperms is taking, and there is no artificial gene traits extraction. You pull out the whole sperms (as a whole) and insert back. It is when you pull out the sperm or egg, and you use chemical on it to extract a particular gene trait you call it GMO or whatever in human.

I just want to point out the mistake we make when using terms. I gat you, but let's use the right breeding terms.

What are the parents of noilers? That's the question we need to ask ourselves first. From there, we can know if noiler is in the picture or not. Even if it is not, read my post very well. I wrote that I am interested in the so-called "heritage" chickens. The word heritage is the focus and not particularly noiler. But if you check well, there is a trace of noiler there. Won't say anything further in this regard cos I have learned to keep what I know to myself so I don't get many people angry. Say and pass on....that's my life now. Sure, they are Google pictures to show what I want to do. Did you read there that I wrote I have them already? I posted that, I was just discussing with someone recently. I was even surprised that many of them don't know that the company exists. Guess what? Only one person was willing to work in a team. Though, they all makde inquiries and they know they cannot afford to do the minimum number the company sells, they still want to go ahead and do it by themselves cos they think they can make the money like that. Only one person... but unfortunately, we have no way forward. That's it. I put my ideas forward, and if they want to follow my leadership, I will put down my time to lead the team. But if they come to ask me questions to be their own inventor... no problem, I will still answer them. But that thing that made me ask people to coke together...se me sef no wan be "jam jam" of the business? Yeah... they want to monopolise it na. And many have trust issues. No wahala. That trust issue.....I have dealt with it, and I don't trust easily too again.

So what I'm actually asking is if free range has any advantages than rearing local chickens in enclosed place? Because free range isn't feasible for me in my area as they keep disturbing my neighbours or get stolen or killed by predators.

Would they gain same weight in free range vs reared in cages?

You are attempting to create a hybrid chicken aka GMO, no be so?

This is a very nice and smart project that I had to log in to tell you to keep it up, one thing I've always had in mind is this, although my idea was with cows but i believe you can do it too with chickens.

The Japanese cross bred and feed their chickens and cows luxury food to the extent their meat tastes exactly like wine/honey, please try to add sweet things(not too much) to see what the general taste would be.

The chickens won't be sweet overnight or have exotic tastes, do it for atleast 30 generations, selecting the biggest and feeding them sweet fruits, nuts and seeds, by the time you've done this for 12 years the chicken meat shouldn't taste like an average chicken anymore.
