“ We all call the oba our father because he is not just an ordinary king but a man god”.

You can call the Oba your father, but the Oba cannot call you his children? Please can you explain this statement of your?
never in my write up did i say the oba cannot call us his children.

Oba is the father of benin land and every sons and daughters of benin kingdom are his children because he is man god and lords over us all.

Except you didn't attend primary school you won't know the difference between "son of the soil" and "son of the palace".
Son of fhe palace is used by those related to the palace by bloodline only.

Obaseki dey humiliate your Oba on a steady and nothing your Oba can do.
Respect begets respect. The Oba needs to be more taciturn, reserved and observant. Not everything you must talk.
Humiliation? As in how? Don't stay outside and assume or just carry up rumour they spread? How has Obaseki humiliated your oba?

In other words, you are a commoner in Benin, even as you claim to be a “son of the soil” on the one hand? If the Oba is man god and lords over you, is it safe to say that you are sort of slaves to him and no longer his children on the other hand? Otherwise I cannot understand your contradiction, since I did not attend primary school.

Maybe you write your comments out of unnecessary deep emotions, without reading before posting. Read your initial comment again.

If you say the Oba is your father, is it inappropriate for the Oba to term a commoner like you his son, knowing that you are “a son of the soil”, or a full born Benin son, just like him?

I have heard other first class Kings say their people are all his children, even with such political occasions at hand. I asked the question, just like Akpata’s representative asked: why was such a correction, if necessary, not made in private? If Akpata thought it wise to eulogize the reverred King, why should he be humiliated publicly in that manner?

either you have comprehension issues or you chose to keep deceiving yourself.

I am a benin man and the oba is our father and i am not a son of the palace.

That the oba should correct Akpata in private when Akpata kept making the statement publicly for political reasons is laughable.

This is my last response to you, consider today your lucky day because i barely have time teaching adult what they ought to learn in primary school.

While they’re looking for loopholes to demarket Akpata, including campaigning with his principal’s structure, OBIdients, their own party elders are busy decamping to the APC. Which one of all the previous Govs with Oba approved links to the palace can his 8 years in Edo State match only the first year of Otti’s tenure in Abia State?? Edo people, if you don’t use your head it will be used against you! grin
Otti's transformation is an illusion. I was in Abia for 5 days last week. The place , especially the capital, Umuahia is a glorified village. Otti has mastered the art of propaganda and he is using it to his advantage. 95% the things he claimed he has done are on paper. Pay the state a visit to see for yourself.

I laugh at you Mr. Teacher?

You failed to respond to the very clear questions about how the Oba relates to his people, out of your ego and arrogance.

What did you expect Akpata to do in the heat of the moment, while visiting your man god and lord? You did not expect him out of his joy, respect and happiness to look at himself as one with his father, the King? If he made the error publicly in the hear of the moment, would it be wrong for the same palace people to attention to it and correct him privately, as a so called illustrious son?

I think you are the one clearly with comprehension and emotion issues, when you could not in simple terms explain to everyone here how the King/citizens relationship works within the Benin society, enabling good decent discussions about traditions not only of the Benin people, but others.

Akpata and his followers knew fully well what they were doing.

Their dogwhistle has been clear to see for those on ground following the elections since he got the Labour Party ticket.

The Oba (gha to kpere baba) has always been neutral in Edo state politics, Akpata and his followers have been dangerously trying to infer, from day one of his candidacy, that because he is the only Benin person in the race, the Ọba is behind him, which is clearly untrue.

He wants to use our father to gather votes and cause tribal strife in the state for his own selfish reasons, that thankfully will never ever work.

In this same Nairaland, we see useless LP sponsored threads about Ọba gives his blessing to this and Ọba supports that with Akpata projects when our father was nowhere near the event or made any pronouncement on it.

That the Oba did not give him the Royal Palace Igbinedion treatment is something Akpata should be thankful for. Not that it will affect him anyway as he will just go back to the Lagos he came from.

1. how did the oba go too far in his correction? pls explain.

2. the people insulting him, pls what part of the country are they from?

3. what part of the country are you from?

4. what is "Engie"?
What part of the country I'm from is none of your business. Let's stick to the issue on ground. Go and watch the video and judge yourself. Emotional intelligence is all that is needed.

“Oba is royal father to all”.

If someone says I am the royal father, does that not confer the citizens the right to claim that the same Oba is their father?

If the Oba of Benin is not “all Obas”, what then is the difference between him and other Kings, reigning over their own people?

With due respect to the Oba, Mr. Akpata did not by any means infer by his words that the Oba was his biological father. Neither did he in anyway disrespect the King. Such matters should not have gone to the press. The spokesperson from the palace should have called Akpata personally to notify him of an error, if any. He accorded the Oba the dignity and honor due to him. The palace was too quick to denounce him, making it look like something was transpiring politically. Kings are supposed to be impartial in political matters, but as we know in our country, they always have their preferred candidates.

Can we say that Akpata does not know the culture? Certainly someone would guide him or the entourage while visiting the Oba appropriately, telling him the words to say and how to conduct himself before the Oba.

Once I was in the palace of the Oba of Lagos. I had an injury and I was walking with a stick. The palace guards accosted me and asked me if I was a traditional Chief from my area. When I said No, the man insisted that I must not use the walking stick inside the palace, as one without a title. I respected the culture.

I think the Oba’s people over reached themselves. In all, we must not let politics cause so much division among us, no matter where we come from.
I have just said that in my previous post. Everywhere in the world, in royal and aristocratic use, words are chosen carefully. Oba of Benin palace is very different. I know because I am from the same bloodline as 2 first class Obas in SW and I do go to those palaces. There are some things also unique to those palaces that don't quite apply in Benin.

My late father used to accompany our grandfather (a duke) to Oba palace when he was still a kid. They were thoroughly taught how to behave at the palace. At the usual meeting chamber at Ugha Ozolua (Ozolua Court) in the palace where cases/disputes are settled by the Oba, the etiquette is totally different too. I know a lot of Benin people who don't know much about it.

Your dad can even be a chief, but not royalty or a duke and won't still know many things about that palace. There are many things about the palace that even a chief won't know, let alone a lawyer who has probably spent more time in Delta and Lagos in the past 25 years working like Akpata. Chiefs have sections of the palace they belong to (and able to access) and no chief, no matter how high, has access to all parts of the normal palace.

What you forget is that Oba of Benin was a head of state of an empire and structures that evolved over centuries are still there. An example, Benin Empire was the first country in the world to recognise Brazil's independence from Portugal in 1824. Brazilian govt recently confirmed it again. Not USA or Argentina who want to claim it. Upon recommendation of a prominent Benin's Afro-Brazilian subject of Lagos. You heard the uproar when Oba said Lagos used to belong to Benin. Idiots who don't know history were shouting. Lagos could not recognise Brazil without Oba of Benin's permission. They were his subjects until late 1840s. Read about Kosoko, Akintoye and Dosunmu (Decemo).

How many Obas have a history of such international diplomacy? Only Oba of Benin's grandson as Olu of Warri later had such diplomatic ties with Portugal, on behalf of his grandfather initially. Diplomacy comes with etiquette and formality. Even recently before becoming Oba, Oba Ewuare II was a career diplomat/ambassador.

If anyone with Akpata told him about palace rule, he clearly did not follow it.

There are other differences. In Benin you don't have a king every 1 kilometre. There are no kingmakers (only crowners) and Oba owes his title to God and ancestors, right from birth. Not to politicians. Benin has no honorary titles for outsiders. IBB, Obasanjo or any of those people were not given titles, even when IBB requested for it, it was refused. In many places, politicians are "dashed " titles during campaign. Like Tinubu during his campaign. How do you give titles at a time you are supposed to be most neutral as a royal father?

Your fame or money mean nothing at the palace. Your good record and integrity do mean a lot.

If you don't understand Benin culture and history, you don't. It is very intricate. Some Benin people watch all those 3 minutes Instagram videos about Benin and foam in the mouth. Such as about Oba marrying two sisters and calling it a taboo in Benin. I have had to educate them about Benin history and precedents that they never knew, what applies to royalty and what doesn't. But all will claim they know Benin culture (from their commoner position) but never realise what they don't know.

Tribalism has increasingly led to WAZOBIA education in 9ja, at the cost of authentic history. If FESTAC 77 was going to hold in 2024, FG would never choose Idia mask of Benin as the symbol. It won't fit the WAZOBIA narrative of current Nigeria.

Thank you so very much for this detailed explanation of the procedures and workings of the palace. Your write up was one area that I wanted to understand.

My concern was that Akpata could have used those words out of some innocence and being an illustrious son of the soil, should have been accorded some respect, by reminding him of his societal social standing privately.

Thank you for your dignified response.

Because Akpata was trying to use the Oba to play his useless brand of politics.

Look at the bigger picture, his use of those words at this time is pregnant with meaning. It is a very wrong thing to do for someone that claims to be a "son of the palace"
