SANDF Combat Lifesaver Course

Bloemfontein Emergency Care Training Satellite (BECTS) based at Tempe Military Base, Free State, held another successful Combat Lifesaver (CLS) course over the period of 03 to 14 June 2024. The course of 15 members comprised two pilots, five 500 Squadron members, and eight 1 Tactical Intelligence Regiment members. The course aims to equip members through multiple simulation exercises, skills such as the use of tourniquets and haemostatic agents to stop bleeding which they will experience in real-life battlefield conditions. The course culminated in a field exercise with drone footage for better evaluation of the battle space. This furthermore enabled the expertise of the 1 Tactical Intelligence members to come into play to allow for tactical movement for Care Under Fire, Tactical Field Care and Tactical Evacuation.

As per the SA Army doctrine, each section must have a Combat Lifesaver Course to be the first to assist in a combat scenario should a member get injured and require emergency stabilisation or any medical intervention. Their role is to keep the injured member stable until they can be sent to the Ops Medic for further observations. They are able to apply techniques, do hemostatic dressing application and put up intravenous lines, which are just a few skills that they are taught.
The course has its foundation in Tactical Combat Casualty Care, where tactics are vital in keeping members alive on the battlefield. Its realism to actual combat conditions comes to life when students are put through various combat simulations to put to use the medical skills that they are taught.
The skills a Combat Lifesaver Course is given are based on the MARCH acronym, on how to treat Massive bleeding, open the Airway, assist the Respiratory system, assess Circulation and treat Head injuries, Hypothermia and Hemorrhage control. On completion of the course, a special certificate ceremony is held to pay homage to all those that have lost their lives in the battle. The Satellite regularly trains specialists in Units such as Pathfinders, Special Forces, SA Police Service Special Task Force and Maritime Reaction Squadron.

I believe this will be used purely for logistics. I don't see the army arming these.

The MD Helicopters from America will be used only for Attack missions.

The same UH-1 Huey that crashed and got the President of Iran killed…?? I just hope it’s not second hand undecided. Great development though, the army deserves its own aviation squadron.

The UH-1 Huey is not a new helicopter and it's no longer in production. There's nothing wrong in buying second hand military equipment either.

You have to understand the army is building capacity, and the UH-1 one of the most dependable helicopters ever produced.

It's a welcome start for the army.

NIGERIAN ARMY TAKES DELIVERY OF ITS FIRST SET OF AIRCRAFTS ...As Army Aviation becomes a reality

The Nigerian Army (NA) has taken a significant step in enhancing its operational capabilities with the delivery of the first batch of new aircrafts. The berthing of the aircrafts marks a significant milestone in the development of the Nigerian Army Aviation’s capacity to provide air support for ground operations. The aircraft BELL UH-1H (HUEY) helicopters, were formally received by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja in a brief ceremony held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Thursday 20 June, 2024.

Receiving the aircrafts, General Lagbaja, noted that the renewed drive to establish an NA Aviation wing was conceived by the then-former COAS, Lieutenant General Kenneth Minimah (rtd), in 2014, with a three-phase ten-year implementation plan.

The COAS extolled former Chiefs of Army Staff, maintaining, that their tenacity and drive, along with the collective efforts of personnel and Nigerian Government’s political will, have been instrumental in realizing the fruition of NA Aviation.

Gen Lagbaja appreciated the various successive administrations for their support in training NA Pilots and Ground Crews as well as putting in place requisite structures. The COAS profoundly expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for fulfilling his promise to fund the acquisition of NA platforms and providing all support to actualize the dream.

The BELL UH-1H Helicopters are equipped with advanced sensors and enablers to conduct a range of missions, including reconnaissance, surveillance, rescue, logistics, transportation, and medical evacuation.

The Army Chief also appreciated the forerunners, particularly the sister services and the Nigerian Police Force Aviation wing, for their support and encouragement. He noted that the NA is spurred to serve the nation better with the acquisition of the new platforms and provide Nigerians, an enabling environment for economic prosperity.

In his remarks, the Coordinator, NA Aviation, Brigadier General Musa Alkali, stated that the arrival of the NA Aviation vanguard platforms is a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance the operational capabilities of the NA Aviation, in line with the COAS’s Command Philosophy.

Brig Gen Alkali stressed that the acquisition of the platforms is a clear demonstration of the NA’s aviation resolve, which started 40 years ago to continuously improve and adapt in the face of an evolving security landscape, adding that this will boost the NA’s reconnaissance, surveillance, and air mobility capabilities. The Coordinator acknowledged the tireless efforts of those involved in the execution of the NA Aviation plan, as well as the international partners.

Earlier, a Consultant for the Nigerian Army Aviation, Major General Emeka Onwuamaegbu (retired) who is also a trained Helicopter Pilot, lauded the Nigerian Army for sustaining the vision over the years that saw to the actualization of the Nigerian Army aviation.

Combining the airlift and CAS capabilities of the UH-1 Huey together with the attack firepower of the incoming Cayuse Warrior helicopters, the Nigerian army will be able to mount air assault operations using the firepower and mobility of these helicopters.

"THE NIGERIAN ARMY AVIATION CORP

The Nigerian army aviation wing has been long coming, it was already created since the time of general Sani Abacha, however it was later shelved and revived by Lt Gen TY Buratai (rtd) in 2015.
Since 2014, the Nigerian army has made commendable progress in training pilots, aircrafts engineers, technicians and other ground support crew.
Some officers of the NA were sent to the US for helicopter pilot training, some of the trained pilots were transferred temporarily to the Nigeria police aviation and others operated for a while with the NAF."
