Exactly. That is what the seyi Makinde administration is gunning for and this airport upgrade approval is the icing on the cake.

In his first term,He did the road that led to the airport by dualising it.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vanguardngr.com/2023/03/wike-joins-makinde-to-commission-ibadan-airport-road/amp/

Constructed a 500,000 Aviation fuel Tank Farm at the Airport. Before now, planes cannot refuel there. Now they do and more airlines are now plying the Ibadan route. Airpeace and others.

His plan is to expand the runway after the FG has given the approval. With the runway expansion and the building of a new terminal, it becomes fully an international airport and will take the stress off the Lagos airport

When the runway in Lagos is full, planes are diverted to Ghana. That won't be again. They will be diverted to Ibadan and contribute to the Economy of the State.
That's impressive.

The last bolded paragraph in the post above is succinctly stated.

In addition, Ibadan (the former capital of the Old Western Region and a trading, commercial and education hub) has a new dry inland container port that would receive cargo from the seaports in Lagos by rail cargo, and with the Ibadan International Airport, international business activities will be further enhanced because Ibadan is the largest city in the entire West Africa. Ibadan is also known as the second largest city in Africa, after Cairo. It makes pure economic sense because many Nigerian Diasporans in Europe, Canada, United States, United Kingdom, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, etc, have roots or families in Ibadan and other contiguous areas with highly mobile indigenes and residents who travel for international trading activities.

The population of Nigeria is also growing rapidly, therefore it takes deep thinking from a deep thinking with foresight to identify the areas of Nigeria where the population pressure points exist and also have commercial advantages as well.

States such as Ekiti and Ondo might have domestic airports, but do NOT need an international airport as of now. [Ekiti State only needs to have a "rail spur" to connect it with the nearby Osogbo in Osun State to further stimulate rail travel by passengers and rail cargo movements. I read an online article where the former Governor Kayode Fayemi said former President Muhammed Buhari had promised him that Ekiti State would be connected by a new rail line to Osogbo in Osun, but that was never done as of the time Buhari left].

Consequently, folks from those two states of Ekiti and Ondo States, including Osun, Kwara, and Kogi States can choose to fly domestically or drive to Ibadan International Airport or Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, in order to finally fly out to their usual international country destination points on the West coast of Africa, Dubai, the United States, UK, Canada, etc.

The international airport in Lagos would get a massive breather with the Ibadan International Airport which will be viable because of the surge in human population and nearness to Lagos and Ogun States which are experiencing population and commercial surges as well.

Cc: @Lanruze, the post here is also my response to your insightful concerns and post about the Ibadan International Airport viability.

I have read all comments and replies on this topic.
All i see is envy , hatred and disgust for Southwest , by some section of the country. Can you imagine a foo....ool by the name Afonj 001 asking where is Ibadan people going? One was even asking where is the population as if its only by population you determines the travelling by Air .
Let me put it straight for your ears Ibadan is the 6th populated state in Nigeria you can fact check. The number of people both indigenous and non indigenous that travel from ibadan to Lagos on a daily basis is enormous , they will rather boycott the Ibadan local airport and go by road to catch a flight in Lagos.
We are not even talking about people that will fly direct from Akure Ekuti , Osun , etc all this people by pass Ibadan airport for Lagos airport. Once this airport is upgraded to international standard people will be confident to take local flights from ibadan to any part of the country.
Lagos airport is always congested if you travels a lot you will understand. People dont need to travel to Lagos especially people from those axis. Safety is one of the magorreason the Ibadan local airport is not well patronised it s as simple as that. The minister of poeer jet had a crashed landing some months ago .

The recently completed Lagos to Ibadan railway is a modern SGR that will be extended to Kano. If Ibadan has an international Airport, it will serve as a conduit in the wilder SW for international travel, considering that the state now has better transport links.
■ Why would you want to fly from a domestic airport to Ibadan domestic airport to connect to Lagos?
■ It makes more sense to fly internationally from London to Ibdan and then take a train to Lagos. I grew up in Lagos but studied in UI; it took me less than 2 hours to get to Ibadan, and the majority of the time was wasted getting a bus from Suru-Lere to Oshodi (this wast the 1980s). Nigeria's problem is a lack of imagination; Nigeria is very poor today because the leaders and people are structured to survive and exploit their environment. However, if the country were developing, modern facilities would be required. t
1. Where is the information on this completed Lagos to Ibadan railway that is a modern SGR? How come my cousins in Ibadan don't even know where it is or how to use it? Kindly inform us. undecided

2. What you just said does not compute at all. The question makes no sense to any of what I have said. undecided

3. Storyland! undecided

Please come back with your rebuttal and update your cousin. that there is an SGR that connects Ibadan to Lagos.

I will not waste my time responding to 2 and 3 as it seem that the logic is beyond your ability.

The line opened in 2021. The new service will reduce congestion at Apapa Port. FREIGHT trains have finally begun operating on the 157km Lagos - Ibadan Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), which was completed in 2021. The first service departed Apapa Port in Lagos on September 12 following several setbacks.26 Sept 2023

So, Buhari's extension of the National Railway service replaces the need for high-speed rail much like the one in Lagos State today in all of Oyo state itself? WOW... you, the people, are indeed the wicked ones in this system that is Nigeria. undecided

High-speed railways are not needed in Nigeria at this stage of our diaspora.

This is all people will see in this wasteful administration, lack or priorities, dissipation of funds in less priority project like upgrading an airport that is redundant or building a coastal road for inexistent fright , building Sokoto to Lagos highway. May God save Nigeria.
