Nukes aside Russia isn't a challenge to the US : if you take nukes out of Russia's Arsenal, they are no match for the US. Compare how much the US has sent to Ukraine and compare with the US Defense budget. It's meagre at best. Russia is struggling cos the US are providing weapons and not even their best.

Russia has fallen off : The big 2 is the US and China. Used to be the US and Russia.

They are not as important in the global arena anymore : when last did Russia's opinion matter in the global scene. Russia has been totally silent in this middle East crises. Russia of the past would have sent warships to the middle East as deterrence.
Russia has stopped being a dependable deterrence to the US.

NATO isn't fighting Russia, has any NATO nation done mobilization? has any sent troops to Russia? has Russia attacked any NATO nation or has NATO nations attacked Russia?
If it was NATO vs Russia, it would be obvious. it is just Russia vs Ukraine.

Now listen, one on one, the Russians will defeats Americans on any battle and vice versa, it all comes down to just one factor which is Location location location. Both have the money, motivation and technology.. at some points Russia technology is superiorior in areas of missiles than Americans. Why would i go around establishing bases carriers and forming aliance around the world, to project power right? To who., if not that I'm afraid to fight a formidable foe alone..
