Re: If You Are Uber Partner In Lagos, Please Share Your Experience Here by northbird:
Over flogging of cars is one of the reasons cars don't last long with some drivers.

I am a staunch believer in getting value for your time spent. In this hustle, some drivers still work almost everyday.
Running around Lagos like a headless chicken taking stupid fares .( some still take 1k trips :
embarassed, )
At the end of the week., the guy that worked 4 days has the same net income as the guy that worked 6 or 7 days.
So 2 or 3 days for one driver was a total waste .

Multiply that by 50 weeks, you have a driver that has a net loss of around 120 - 150 days in a year.

Such drivers have cars that depreciate very fast.

The camry doesn't short oil and its not being heavily used everyday, with synthetic, it will last 2 or 3 months before another oil change...

I used my Corolla from the time I noticed it was burning oil (oil consumption) (2014) till I sold it (2021), I was topping oil 1-2 liters prior to next oil change and depending on usuage. I travelled wella, far trips.
Here in NL car talk, I asked about the problem, a lot said I should save up to buy another engine.
The engine served me wella and still silent till I sold it.

I switched from 5w30 to 20w50. Cos it is a waste of money and synthetic oil. It makes no sense cos I saw it as wasting of expensive oil. I changed it at 5000km instead of 7500km(which I believed it is for the synthetic oil).

Let's not forget that modern cars require top up after 1000km. At least I have seen this in 08 Corolla and 07 Accord.

If u can afford to be topping up the engine will serve you till e tire.

I dont rep Lagos mechs @ all . Esp those ones that say they ring engines.

Ringing engines is akin to like doing surgery on the human body.
If the mech ( surgeon) does not get it right. The factory calibration of that engine is gone.

The funny thing is these so called mechs are as expensive as f..k and most times they don't deliver.
Re: If You Are Uber Partner In Lagos, Please Share Your Experience Here by northbird:
I once saw one uber guy topping the engine in the afternoon... I know an irresponsible driver once I see one.
Those periods, i check my engine guage every morning before I start the car. No guesswork or chances.
If the oil level is towards the lower mark and for one reason or the other, I don't have one litre to top it up, that days work is suspended till evening.

I will take bus to Mobil lateef Jakande buy 2 1 litre packs ,then it was 2500 - 3100.
I always top the oil when the engine is stone cold.

I could even suspend the day's work n start the following morning .

I won't start the engine unless it is properly guaged [ oil between the two holes on the dipstick)

Don't chase target.. Start the work gradually. In a month, you should know your income level.

Profits in ehailing depends on various factors.

1. The health of the car

2. The strength of the driver

3. The knowledge of the terrains. ( most new drivers will work fully today, ignoring the fact that a simple error today could set them back for 3 or 4 days even a week, if they are unlucky).

So, start gradually n build experience. The hustle is still profitable if the car is yours, even if you are on rentals. It is still better than most of the office jobs out there.

This hustle has tot me not to rate how people think. To them the drivers are cashing out and I’ll admit as some driver dashboard is not smiling right now. From my pov, the aftermath is everything. Making 80k to go fix car with 60k, what’s the point?

the first person comment got me laughing 😂 While I’m thinking the state of the car after swimming flood.

The challenge is not all drivers understand management of an old engine.
An engine that shortens oil can't be consistently used on long trips anymore.
Medium (10-15km) trips will suffice.

Not planning to fire the car to Edo or kogi when you know the oil shortens.
Boss I great u. Pls did u use AC with ur engine shorting?

A one time travel won't really do damage . What I'm saying is , during the time, I was using it, I declined inter state trips because it will lead to constant firing of the engine which obviously will worsen the shortening scenario.

So medium trips n short trips were my ideal favourites, and indrive was just coming up then. So short trips were really profitable.

Pope, i know you are joking , it's not everyday .. eating out is expensive no doubt. But I'm very careful , cos food sellers in a bid to sell cheap stuff, will go n buy the dregs of pepper ingredients ..
I'd rather spend on food than buy drugs.

Good take. A vehicle shorting oil is not the end of its life or usefulness. Just do your cost valuation against management or repairs and take action.

Like me today, I have oil shortage but due to bad leaks, my engine will need to be dropped for the repair which I don't have the time to do now or intend to do anytime soon (so as not to allow a mech add an issue to my issues) so I just keep topping up as necessary.

I even travel very well with it, here to the east and back frequently. I just stop at Ore and top up a litre and it will be low again at my destination. That's how I mitigate its adverse effects during long distance trips. On a daily I top up a litre in like 700kms in my usual city drive.

The fact is if its due to an oil burning issue, then the catalysts or O2 sensors can get bad quickly if it's not tackled on time. This is where I am lucky

Are you indirectly speaking to/or about me? grin

See, learn to discern sarcasm and intent in vocabulary. It will help you.

If you check properly without any bias whatsoever you'd realise that i am one of the people who advocate for the livelihood of this thread against all odds , most people say nothing or hide behind innuendos to make their own opinions known (you yourself do this) and it's okay 👍🏾

Anytime you see me here coming to post about 'this thread being dead' was only done to Ginjah people like you and others to keep posting if for no other reason at least just to prove me wrong . . . And for the most part it worked grin

I have said it not once or twice here before that I respect you for always putting in the work right from when you joined us here till today and my view has never changed. Just calm down, relax and know who the real enemies of this thread are and you will get clarity on many levels.

Other members have gained theirs even after attacking me here, its okay. I always knew they would come around. Time is the only factor but the truth always reveals itself.

Much respect 🙏
