My School
During my time there was always light, that was one thing you can depend on and During rare occasions where there is no light, the school management will put on the Gen around 7pm at night still 2am then again by 5am

Uniben is an academic institution. If they can't generate renewable energy internally then it's a disappointment for a school that has some of the finest electrical engineers in Nigeria

So your idea is to use renewable energy... Fantastic. I'm sure the VC has thought of that.
But how will you raise the funds for the project? By increasing school fees, waiting for Govt or begging for funds.
Well,Just in case you have some spare cash, you can also donate. This is just for hostels and main library.

May be you should do your research to have an idea of how much the government generates on a monthly basis via value added tax which all Nigerians pay through almost all commodities purchased on a daily basis. In 2023 alone, Nigeria generated over 3.6 trillion naira through VAT. CIT collection was about 4.9 trillion naira.What exactly were the monies used for? I'm not even taking consideration of duty tariffs, etc.

Nigerians love to reason emotionally, not logically. How many things are Nigerians buying that carries tax. when over 70% live in rural areas where there is no supermarket or receipt. The major people paying vat are the big businesses. when you go to tailor to sew clothes do u pay tax? when u go to market to buy yam and fish, do u pay tax?? Apart from supermarket, where else are u paying tax?
i know the VAT collected seems huge to you, but divide it by the value of dolloars then divide it again by the population of 200million and you will see nigerian makes zilt!

I feel for the students.

The Time I was there, porter would turn on the gen from 7pm to 2am and then from 5am to 7am.

Electricity was still even quite stable then too.

Weeks to exam, the school was happily providing just one hour of power daily. Students were supposed to read in darkness.

A demand for 24/7 power may be unrealistic, but it is clearly the first step in a negotiation that the school is supposed to counter by at least providing power for the whole night, and part of daylight. This is how a University should be run.

If the VC cannot make the basics happen, he should be relieved of his job and someone else should be appointed there.

Simple and short.

Imagine hearing about students getting one hour of power and your first response is to sneer at demands of the students who should rightly be extremely outraged.

Your analysis is wrong. Are you aware that most of the items we import have vat component in their custom duty at the point of clearing? Who do you think bear this tax?

Import tax is not the same as personal income tax, also different from VAT and Stamp Duties. Dont get it twisted. You should probably do yur research before arguing. What i am saying is that most people dont pay personal income tax, especially the informal sector.

And you are arguing off point cos my initial post was not about personal income tax. Also I tell you without an iota of doubt that a lot of the products we import Have VAT components. You can check with clearing agents

How many people are importing inyour village Most people live in rural communities, not city like you. Moreover, even the VAT u are arguing, many companies in the city employ all manner of tactics to avoid tax, including bribery. So stop arguing. Nigeria is not a tax efficient country, period.

Beside food, almost everything we consume is imported and distributed nationwide. People don't need to be importing in my village for my villagers to consume imported items. Your lines of argument are far from logical reasoning but you are too closed minded to learn.

The correct question is WHY DO WE HAVE GOVERNMENT? As it stands, it would be better we return to strictly monarchy. Each kingdom should be responsible for their own security, income generation, welfare and development. Progress of my home town should not be tied to the sanity of a few idiots in state house or also rock. All levels of government should be dissolved. The system has been useless to us the past 120+ years. That is enough experiment period

When the country was still a bit sane, there was hardly any interruptions for weeks on that campus. Infact, the interruptions hardly last more than 10-15 minutes

Most of the comments on this thread reeks of ignorance concerning the genesis of the issue. The school has been receiving outrageous bills for a long time. This situation was always going to happen. How can the school be run properly with large chunks of revenue going for power? #264 million is not #264 thousand.

Atleast you can see clearly from the image you shared that it is doable and significantly cheaper than BEDC. But the original post indicates that what the students are asking for is not realistic as if it is rocket science
