Help Me Make A Decision by Iamfedup(op): 6:59pm On Jul 07, 2024
Good evening everyone, I recently finished my NYSC in Ibadan and I came back home which is Ekiti state. The issue now is I applied for the first bank graduate trainee when I was still in Ibadan and applicants have been called for an exam which will take place on Saturday. My dad is saying I shouldn't go back to Ibadan with the excuse that I should go and start my masters in ekiti state university. I am so confused about what to do.

Should I advise you to disobey your dad?

Go and work, masters can be later... You need work experience

There are no right or wrong decisions until the actions are determined. What you have presented are two paths and you can only follow one at the moment regardless the outcome.

After your NYSC, you were not supposed to go back home to your parents. But you've made that mistake already (you will soon understand grin ). The next thing now is try to get a job or else life after NYSC will hit you hard

That was my decision initially, not to go back to home to my parents but they used all the means possible to force me back against my will.

If your Dad is ready to sponsor your Masters please go for it.

Thank you.

There's nothing wrong in going back to your parents after school. The problem with young people these days is they are too eager to "start life" and when they cut off the support they should have gotten, take up responsibility early and fail they resort to crimes and rituals.

If your Dad is ready to help you further, please let him. You will have better opportunity in the labour market than those who delved in immediately. The song "Adulthood na Scam" is real ooo. Get all the support you can, you will be at an advantage later.

Let me tell you what I would do in a similar situation: There are no jobs in the country even for experienced workers not to talk of a new graduate. So don't joke with this one. Go for it and give the interview your best in order to get the job. It's not about disobeying your dad, he means well and his perspectives should always be understood and respected. Discuss your plans with him.
Once you get the job, then you can apply for masters and do that on the weekends. There are many institutions now in Nigeria that run (almost completely) online programs, some mostly weekends.

But don't forsake a good job opportunity for masters, because masters does not guarantee employment. In short I doubt if it even helps you get a good job self, because there are many places that will consider you "too qualified" for the peanuts they plan to pay you as an entry level employee.

Your Dad does not realise that a job anywhere in the world is worth more than 10 Masters Degrees with no job at the end of it and know that your Dad may just be afraid of you not needing him anymore once you start earning your own money.

You have to do what you think is best for your own LONG TERM future and a job (if you manage to get it in today's depressed world economy) is better than 10 theoretical masters degrees with no job in sight after the Masters degrees.

Think about number one for once and that is you. At times you have to be cruel to others to be kind to yourself and in this case you are not even being cruel to your Dad.

this is a discussion you should have with your father, not NLers...

Try to convince your dad to allow you go for the job exams while keeping an open mind to also consider his suggestion to go for masters..

I don't see one stopping the other.

Bro the chances for the graduate trainee now are also slim unlike those days.. don't be surprised to see thousands of applicants coming for the same interview for the position.

If it fails, go for the masters while keep searching. If it succeeds, get in and still go for your masters.

Your father is not in-sync with trends.

After masters with no experience u are a no body in the labour world but B.Sc holder with 6months experience is far greater and employable than a masters holder.

Be smart, some advice no longer work in this time and age.

Don't also forget, that ekiti state is the only state in Nigeria with greater number of professors but the questions is,how have they fared compared to young men of today with skills.

Look beyond masters...go for that interview, work few years and resign and set up a loan business and secure a licence and enjoy ur remaining life on earth.

Start early,i did it and have done this for past 12years.
