I wasn't a literature man but I read Achebe's books. I can't remember any of Soyinka's own I read.
If his were very good, my dad would have bought a couple. I read Chinua's own taking delight. His books were the most talked about while a lot of us were growing up.
As for the awards, Chinua, rejected them.
since your dad does not have chase hardly books it means hardly's books were not good?

The federal government does not require or seek the consent of a citizen’s family prior to conferring him or her with national honours.
This is a man that has rejected national honors severally when he was alive. So i don't think the federal government ignored him on purpose. I believe it will still cause a political uproar if the fed govt carry out such move.

The FG must name something big in this country after the legendary Professor Chinua Achebe.

I am a great fan and reader of Wole Soyinka, by the way, so this is not based on any beef with the great Nobel-winning writer, who certainly earned the right to have the National Theatre named after him by President Tinubu.

But we must not put Chinua Achebe, the Booker Prize winning author of Africa’s greatest novel, Things Fall Apart, in the position of the proverbial lizard of his great book who fell from the tall iroko tree, and promised to praise himself if no one else did.

That book is Required Reading in the curricula of schools all over the world, from Kenya to the USA.

It has been translated into over 100 languages worldwide, and remains till date, the biggest selling novel by an African, bringing great honour to Nigeria.

Achebe was also an erudite advocate for good governance and govt accountability.

According to wiki

“Chinua Achebe…. was a Nigerian novelist, poet, and critic who is regarded as a central figure of modern African literature. His first novel and magnum opus, Things Fall Apart (1958), occupies a pivotal place in African literature and remains the most widely studied, translated, and read African novel.

Along with Things Fall Apart, his No Longer at Ease (1960) and Arrow of God (1964) complete the "African Trilogy".

Later novels include A Man of the People (1966) and Anthills of the Savannah (1987).

In the West, Achebe is often referred to as the "father of African literature", although he vigorously rejected the characterization.“

must u forcefully put achebe and soyinka in the same class/level
u are doing more harm dan good to achebe's legacy.

anytime wole is being celebrated, the madness in your head triggers and u start wailing
prof soyinka is not achebe's mate abeg
celebrate both legends without comparism

the inferior will always want to attach to d superior for survival/relevance.

I guess they should name peter obi's hero beer company after him.

Has to be a federal project.

Perhaps the 2nd Niger Bridge?

It would be quite an honour because that bridge cost nearly 2 billion dollars. Huge project.
2nd naija bridge is already named after Mohammadu buhari.

Only hero beer company remain.

Aguyi Ironsi should have used his 50 days government administration to remember Chinua Achebe ....your people can not labour where they haven't sow....many of you didn't vote for Tinubu, why then expecting him to honour your irresponsible ancestors who died ungraceful?

If he name anything after Chinua Achebe some of your foolish IbO brother will come online and still come to tell us that if Chinua Achebe is alive , he wouldn't have collected it....so , let those who are happy about the government get the credit not those who hate everyone around them including their maker which is God

There are literally MILLIONS of testimonies by people who were certified clinically dead, (which physically is no different form actual death) who were revived, and recounted INCREDIBLE experiences that show that we ALL survive 'death' and transit to the the place we call 'heaven' or the 'spirit world', which is actually our REAL home from where we came to be born briefly as humans.

Your ancestors knew these fact for thousands of years. They communicated with the ancestors, whom they knew were alive on the other side.

You rejected their knowledge to follow ROMAN inventions via 'christianity', which has confused and misled you.

That's why today, you, an AFRICAN WHO SHOULD KNOW BETTER, believes that ''once you are dead, that's it.''.

Gentlemen, we must honour this man.
Both Achebe and Soyinka should go and get their rewards from white people whom they served. They should get their reward from king Charles of England cause they've done more for his language than African languages.

You're talking about two people who collaborated with the CIA to destroy their own languages!! Two people who made the African continent a language-less continent. Two people who made African languages unattractive to our people. Two people who finally surrendered whatever power was left of Africa to white people after the so called independence. Two people who should be cast away from society into an evil forest.

And you said he has his books in 100 languages around the world? Which of his books is in his native Igbo language? How many of Soyinka's books are in his native Yoruba language?

Who really did they serve with their so called knowledge?

The irony of this thread is that the loudest negative responses are from people who have not read a single work by either Soyinka or Achebe.

Literary illiterates and mental midgets who care overwhelmingly more about the “tribe” of the writer than his literary output.
