Exactly. I avoided it for years; adopted it for years; then abandoned it again .

Why will a normal human being be learning regex .. when there are many programming languages you can learn, why is it that you choose to learn regex that is only use for validation

Its not only used for validation. Just say thats what you have only used it for. I use it for string manipulation as well in one of my libraries its very powerful and easy to use for string manipulation.

But like I always say for regex know the basics at least then learn more about it when you need it. But the problem with that which is what you just displayed, is that you won't know where or when to use it if you only know the basics. Stuffs that will be easier to do with it you will end up finding a more verbose solution for.
