OPINION : Four Reasons You Should Think Before Joining The Nationwide Protest

By Wisdom Nwedene

Ahead of the planned nationwide protest scheduled to kick off on August 1st, 2024, I strongly believe that Nigerian Youth should think twice before joining the protest.

Though, there are genuine reasons for the protest but I have four strong reasons which made me to believe that this protest is not in the best interest of the country at the moment.

Below are my reasons

1. The organisers Of The Protest Are Faceless Individuals : It's crystal clear that those organising this protest are not known till now. I recommend that this type of protest should have leaders that should be calling the shots in case things go wrong. In a protest where everyone is a leader, many things can happen. The organisers should be at the forefront, leading the protesters and controlling the crowd so that things won't go wrong.

2. Thugs Can Hijack The Protest: It's very difficult to organise a peaceful protest in a country battling with bandits, criminals, hoodlums and expect things to go fine.

3. It's Still Early To Judge Tinubu’s Government : I still believe that it's too early to judge Tinubu’s Administration by leading this type of heavy protest against him. Despite that his policies are too harsh, Tinubu still needs time to address issues and bad policies of previous administrations.

4 All of us can still remember what happened during the EndSARS protest. Many lives were lost and property worth billions of Naira destroyed. How sure are we that this Nationwide won't degenerate to what happened during EndSARS protest? I think we should think twice. We can't afford to lose more lives and our national assets destroyed again just like what is happening in Kenya.

The North will always mislead you.

You're now having the backing of the North.... But you forget that, a Yoruba man will easily overlook the activities of a Northerner and will find someone to hold accountable if the protest go wrong. And that foolish person will be you ..

The North will protest in the North.... anything that goes wrong will be handled...

You on the other side want to protest in a Yoruba land.... No be mumu you be?
What is your problem with this protest, since when has it become a crime to protest. You are just an hypocrite. You and your people protested in Ogun and Ibadan during naira scarcity during Buhari regime, so why are you now against this one, is it because Tinubu is from your tribe. In this present time it is only a fool that will allow politicians to use his or her brain, no politician can use tribalism as an instrument to control me

Upcoming politician, well done. There's only one sad truth that negates all your points though: the APC led government has only succeeded in increasing minimum wage while reducing real wage over the course of their 9 years in office. The government is made up of smart persons who've mastered the art of giving with the left while collecting with the right.

Nigerians must learn to be patriotic: put the interests of the nation above personal gains. How are the major policies (subsidy removal/fuel price increase, VAT increase, interest rate increase, etc.) helping the nation as an entity? What are the leaders PLANS of bettering the living conditions in Nigeria? How have they improved security?

How much did Bayo Onanuga pay to promote the kind of threads I have been seeing on FP?
I tire o ! every body and government organization is sounding like a broken record. Nobody is asking the security agencies to do their job of safe guarding citizens while they go about protesting peacefully. Democracy without the people's active participation is not complete. Nigerians should be allowed to protest and this should be done in a peaceful manner.

All ibos quoting me and giving me a million reasons why they should protest in Lagos?

But Imo, Enough, Anambra, Abia and the rest are rotting out with governors handling the state economy with whap mentality.

The government of Lagos is the best governor so far when it comes to visionary and development.
