Oga, I sited example of government institution (INEC) were corruption is being incubated as we speak and you're talking about free market economy...

What's that with corruption in different government institutionshuh
Your post was more general and was addressed accordingly.

Now if you're talking about ECONOMIC corruption, the solution is indisputable.

As to political corruption, the path may not be as clear but is worth trying.....DEVOLUTION of power to more HOMOGENEOUS units of population. People are less likely to steal from their own kind, though Nigerians seem to do it even within families...might be a result of sustained poverty though.

Nigeria could also give serious consideration to inviting international institutions to conduct our citizen identification and then elections.

An application of free market principles is likely to raise the wealth & prosperity of the people. Rich people have less incentives to engage in political corruption and also tend to speak up and oppose such malfeasance.

Other measures worth considering include a right to bear arms and military training for all citizens and laws that several curtail the rights of political office holders and government employees.

For instance something as simple as denying such people the right to own ANY property or money abroad, place strict limits on employment AFTER government service and so on.

For example, with most powers resting with the States, a FEDERAL LAW or Constitutional Amendment could limit government service to 12 years AND make it ILLEGAL for ANY government employees or politician to live or own property outside their state FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIFE after government. To make it more drastic you could even ban them from TRAVELING outside their states for life. In Igbo tradition holders of high title were prohibited from sleeping outside the boundaries of their towns.

Basically make government employment a disadvantageous thing in society.

Oga Anonimi,

Experience has shown that Nigerians will corrupt anything, including healthcare and primary education. Sorry, it's the truth. Your concern is sensible, but we're talking Nigerians here....Nigerians.

As for import tariffs, well Nigeria has had plenty of import tariffs. How far with say, rice production? It's merely another avenue for corruption.

Nigeria also has a law that prohibits the export of granite on the rationalization that it's essential for building roads and thus needed for national development. How far with Nigerian roads?

Nigeria needs to go all the way to freedom. The people won't accept it anyway 🤷 so the suffering will drag on....a loota continua

Good Luck to Nigerians

If you are a Nigerian who sees things differently, please why are you not working on having more Nigerians have a similar worldview as you have, until your worldview is the dominant position of the majority?

Is this not how Europeans worked out their own primitive Cavemen tendencies that we are yet to evolve from huh

Oga I've tried in my own little way. Nigerians are a special people, is what the problem seems to be. There's a grim determination among Nigerians to reap where they didn't sow, to appropriate what belongs to others by any means or device.

Over to you, go ahead and convert Nigerians to common sense.

Nonsense. Nobody has time for this.

A man can't drive safely with his eyes permanently fixed on the rear view mirror. But the APC persists in exactly the same kind of this complete and utter foolishness. Instead of getting its act together and providing the leadership this country desperately needs, the APC (and the governments it has produced) is forever locked in media battles with the opposition. Who has time for this? undecided

The APC's BAT and Bello/Ododo are now in power. Their responsibility to Nigerians is to govern and govern responsibly but they have failed miserably to deliver on this. Their failed policies have impoverished Nigerians to the point that Nigerians need hand outs to survive. And this thoroughly inept administration cannot even accomplish the basic task of getting grains to desperately hungry people? undecided So what is it good for?
The people of Nigeria voted for APC with full knowledge of APC ideology and programs.

APC is a socialist party. Socialist parties produce poverty and a majority of Nigerians voted for them. Try and accept that simple fact. The people are ultimately responsible.

A lot of Nigerians are worse than Tinubu . So many thieves in this country . So Tinubu ordered sharing of rice .Some bastard Nigerians decided to sell it instead of distributing . This same set of people will join the protest and insult the politician . Wallahi UNTIL corrupt people are shot in front of their families before people go get mental reset in this country
This is a primitive solution. Why not build simple systems that PREVENT corruption?

In 1995 my family tried to get a phone line. The only phone company in Nigeria at the time was NITEL. By law, only government could own or operate telecom services.

The cost of mobile phone was ₦10K, land line was ₦5K and IDD was ₦7K. I went to the NITEL office and was asked for a ₦30K bribe.

Few years later the PDP governments privatized and deregulated the telecoms market. My family bought one of the first telecoms line simcards in our state for ₦55K. No one asked for bribe. There's ZERO complaint of corruption in the phone market today, the last one was the per-minute billing controversy by MTN. We know what solved that issue 😏

Students offer SEX to gain admission to Federal Universities, but no such corruption has been reported at PRIVATE universities in Nigeria.

So the simpler and more humane solutions are clear and should be applied FIRST.

Thanks 😊

Why this is difficult to most Nigerians is baffling. When I say there is something the black man has with logic and mathematics, they will say I am an Uncle Tom. How on earth is this freakingly hard to grasp? Even Nigeria's so-called educated class, aka intellectwats, don't support the free market in its entirety and devolution of powers.

I understand you . But you have to understand that systems are run by people . No matter how great a system is , if the people running it are corrupt , they will corrupt that system . Nigerians go to countries with working systems ,they find loopholes and corrupt it . China has good systems but still the people who try to corrupt it gets shot . That is exactly my point . There has to be dire consequences for corruption . Anything less is just a waste of time . My honest opinion

Yes I support them but Privatization and deregulation in a corrupt system is a futile venture . Corrupt cronies without capacity to run the businesses buy the facilities at a ridiculous fraction of the value . Look at what the supposed saint Obi did ? His family business Bought shares of a company his government gave billions to . Tinubu and Atiku are fantastically corrupt so who will oversee the privatization ? The real futility is fighting corruption INSTEAD of taking simple steps that will NATURALLY eliminate corruption.

It's better to sell NNPC to Dangote for $1, sell Ajaokuta Steel and associated iron ore mines for to Peter Obi for $2, and sell Lagos MM Airport to Seyi Tinubu for zero, than continue pushing an unwinnable war against human nature. All these powerful people are still enjoying now so what's the difference?

NIPOST has been in government hands for decades, how much profits and jobs has it produced? The same politicians that you will object to them buying it, they're getting corrupt benefits in NIPOST today. What is ANYBODY doing about that? NOTHING!!!

JUST SELL OFF EVERYTHING!

In the kind of completely free market economy I recommend, the new owners of these companies will either produce or lose lots of money. New enterprises will emerge to compete with them. The ultimate beneficiaries will be the Nigerian people who will have increased availability of cheaper, higher quality and sustainable goods and services.

There will NEVER be equality in any country in this world. Someone will ALWAYS have an advantage, the objective is to put systems in place for a competitive market.

We meet again, Ibe Okehie.

Like I told you a long time ago - these ideological labels don't tell the full story. There are some who would argue that the APC's economic policy choices so far -place it firmly in the right of centre group. But you clearly disagree. So who's right?

The one thing I can agree with you on is that Nigerians must bear full responsibility for their electoral choices.

I agree with you wholeheartedly on the privatization and deregulation . It is ultimately the best way to go . However corruption is deeper than what you think . How did other privatizations done in Nigeria go ? Case in point is the power sector. Have Nigerians been better off ? Is there any other example like the telecommunications sector ? Most of these politicians make sure that the market/sector entry is difficult because of their political influence . For example look at the accusations that Dangote asked to be sole importer of petroleum products into Nigeria . If it is true , imagine the amount to undue influence that signifies . If the political leaders guarantee a truly competitive environment maybe privatization will work well .

The electricity sector was only PARTIALLY privatized and even then it was done in a way that ensured the Federal Government retained TOTAL control.

Transmission Company of Nigeria is the SOLE BUYER & SELLER of all electricity in Nigeria and it's owned by the Federal Government. The same Federal Government sets all prices. So we can see there's no real free market in that industry. Please get it right, face reality. That's why electricity supply is so poor.

If you produce corn and the government is the SOLE BUYER and SOLE SELLER of corn, is that a free market? We're all likely university graduates here, let's try and use our smarts.

Yes, we need Constitutional Amendments to codify and make Nigeria a free market. In classical economics there's three factors of production...land, labour and capital. Right now ALL three are controlled, owned and priced by government. That AUTOMATICALLY makes Nigeria a country of poor productivity.

You're asking me of other successful privatized and deregulated sectors? Are you not Nigerianhuh Cement, telecoms, broadcasting, banking and petrochemicals were all privatized and deregulated. The results are clear to all.

Good Luck to Nigerians.
