30 Million GSM Lines Not Properly Linked To NIN — Telcos by Islie(op): 9:15am On Aug 02, 2024
The Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria, Gbenga Adebayo, has stated that more than 30 million phone lines are not properly linked to a National Identification Number and remain at risk of disconnection.

He said these lines are mainly in car trackers, MiFi units, WiFi devices, and Point of Sale machines

“The numbers are staggering. We are looking at potentially over 30 million SIM cards, including those in various digital devices, that have not been properly linked to the NIN. Many of these SIMs are in car trackers, POS machines, MiFis, WiFis, and many other devices that use SIMs to operate,” Adebayo said during a recent interview with News Central and monitored by our correspondent on Thursday.

This revelation comes on the back of recent chaos caused by the unblocking of lines not connected to their NINs.

Last weekend, telcos began barring phone lines not linked with NINs days before the Nigerian Communications Commission’s July 31, 2024 deadline.

Since February 2024, telcos have implemented a phased disconnection of phone lines in compliance with an NCC directive. At the end of 2023, the regulator asked telcos to disconnect lines that had not been successfully linked with NIN across three phases, ending July 31, 2024.

Industry experts told The PUNCH that three million phone lines were initially blocked before the Nigerian Communications Commission directed telcos to restore the blocked telephone lines.

According to Adebayo, these subscribers were disconnected because of discrepancies in records between telecom operators and the National Identity Management Commission.

“There are instances where individuals provided their NINs, but the information did not match our records,” Adebayo noted. “These discrepancies must be resolved at service centers to ensure proper verification.”

While the timing of the disconnections coincided with nationwide protests, Adebayo emphasised that there was no link as the action had begun long before the protests.

“Unfortunately, the disconnection coincided with the planned protests, but it had nothing to do with stifling communication,” he said. “We are guided by our social contract with subscribers and provide services on a non-discriminatory basis.”

The ALTON boss further highlighted the role of accurate data in building a reliable national database. He stressed the importance of individuals providing truthful and consistent information during registration to avoid future complications.

“To have a reliable and equipped national database, all of us must contribute accurate information,” Adebayo urged. “This database can only be as reliable as the information provided by the public.”

“The consumer is our priority, therefore, considering the challenges the blockages have caused, the commission has directed all operators to reactivate all lines that were disconnected over the weekend… Reactivated consumers are to note that this is for a limited period to allow them to properly link their NIN to their SIM,” he added.

If your line was blocked and you have linked your NIN to your sim card, quickly do it again before your line is blocked again.

That's exactly what they told me last Sunday when I went to MTN office to reconnect my blocked line. The question is, how is that our fault?

They simply want to update SIM card registration for security reasons. You must thumbprint during the exercise. They are only using NIN as a cover.

And how is it their fault too?
They passed the info around, set a deadline, extended it three times, add more outlets to each area to ensure easy access and all

What else were they supposed to do?

Go house to house like Jehovah's Witnesses?

I think only sim cards that are used for phone calls that should be mandated to be linked with NIN.

What about prepaid meters nko? They use sim cards. Will they be disconnected too?

No mention of competency at all? Are you oblivious that many that have already linked their lines to NIN were also disconnected?

You are being one-sided. What about those who had their NIN linked to their SIM but got blocked?

Before you start uttering words, verify and scrutinize to deliver a perfect result.

To those who staged the 'No To Protests' processions against the #endbadgovernance protests, I hope their demands were:

1. We want fuel price to remain 1k/litre or more.

2. We want dollar-naira exchange rate to go higher.

3. We want hunger to kill Nigerians so there won't be anyone left to govern.

4. We want more tax burdens on the citizens.

5. Government shouldn't bother repairing the refineries, etc.

Yeye dey smell!

I think we need to come up and sue the telecom companies in Nigeria before their autocratic tendencies will stop.
Whose duty is to link sim card properly? I know of people who had linked their sim cards up to three (3) times yet, MTN and other telecom companies keep disconnecting their lines at will. You asked a customer to register his/her sim at the point of purchase or first time of registration, why not do all the necessary reconciliation with all the relevant data bases before activating such lines. Due diligence is not followed yet you go ahead and activate lines only to be disconnected without prior notice. This nonsense must stop
