Protest: Babangida Denies Endorsing Military Rule by InfoGuru118(op): 9:03am On Aug 05, 2024
Former Military President General Ibrahim Babangida has refuted claims that he endorsed military rule over democratic governance.

In a statement released by his media office and signed by Mahmud Abdullahi in Minna, Babangida reaffirmed his commitment to democratic rule and urged Nigerians to embrace and ensure its success.

The statement addressed a post from a parody account on X (formerly Twitter) with the handle @General_Ibbro, which falsely attributed to Babangida an endorsement of military rule's virtues over democracy.

“This dubious account carries our principal’s picture and name and the coat of arms of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for added effect but it does not belong to him nor does the former President sanction any post appearing there.

“In the past and more famously during the presidential elections last year, it posted a blatant falsehood that the former President had endorsed a particular presidential candidate and his party, thereby causing public confusion and some embarrassment to the Elder Statesman.

“We have just learnt that it has posted a similarly fake statement where the former President was supposed to have said that Nigeria has the best years under military, democracy made things worst.

“We want to state unequivocally that neither the twitter or X account which is essentially a parody or pretend account, nor the statement made therein ever belonged to the retired General.

“For the avoidance of doubt, General Babangida (rtd) believes that Nigeria’s democracy is resilient and has come to stay and that we must do everything we can to safeguard the process.

“As a nation, we are currently facing a number of challenges but the former president has always expressed the view that we will eventually overcome these challenges and come out a stronger, more progressive nation. The solution to our problems as he had said previously, is ‘more’ democracy, not less.

“General Babangida truly believes that the era of military intervention in Nigeria’s politics is long gone and he has said how proud he is that the Nigerian military has stood firmly behind multiple democratic governments in this country since 1999, thus giving us the longest run of civilian administration since independence.

“The user of this unfortunate parody account which we gather was traditionally supposed to be an account that imitates or at least mirror the sentiments of the original twitter or X account that it copies, has serially chosen to use the account to undermine democracy and spread stories capable of causing animosity.

“Sadly, there seems very little we can do to make the overseers of X or twitter to remove or sanction this tiresome account, so we are again obliged to advise the general public to ignore any post from this account that purportedly claims to represent my opinion,” General Babangida declared.

The statement advised media practitioners and social media users to be more discerning in future and make the necessary efforts to get confirmation before sharing messages attributed to former President Babangida on X on any social media platform.

Oga leave that one, the only reason Tinubu is still the president is the power he has. To be the Grand commander in chief of armed forces is the greatest power a civilian can have. This power corrupts, that's the main reason our civilian presidents are misbehaving because the military is subordinate to the government.
Babangida is a fool, he's one of the sole proprietor of Nigeria nightmares.....very wicked human being.
Tinubu on the other hand is an old senile man who's damage by quest for power and has nothing to offer but to crumble the nation.
What's best is we all go our separate ways like before the amalgamation but Britain would never accept that which shows Nigeria is not independent yet but independent by mere exaggerations.

Even if Military take over, would they need to be endorsed by a former ruler?

Normally, its often junior officers that do it.

To think that there would be governance far worse than the regimes of Abacha and Babangida gives me the shock of my life. To say the truth, Buhari's regime is 10 times worse than the military's and Tinubu's own is a 100 times worse. I thought I have seen it all when we were buying money with money, until we are now unable to buy food with money because food has become unaffordable. cool

The suffering was not as bad as this during the military rule. Many Nigerians will welcome the military if they try to take over the government because this hardship is too much.

All the soldiers serving in Nigeria's military today didn't fight the Biafran war. Those who fought the war had metal balls. Orchestrating a coup was like having a breakfast meeting - they were scared of nobody.

Now, NA is just full of sissy men who only show bravery when civilians are involved. Had those soldiers who fought the war still served in the military today, they would've chased Tinubu out of Aso Rock without Babangida's consent. However, military rule isn't the best though.

Former Military leaders like IBB, Abacha destroyed this country. Before them, we had SERIOUS leaders, who, despite their tribal affinities, were truly concerned about their people; the tallest building in Ibadan till 2025 was built in the Awolowo era. The first TV station in Nigeria too, also situated in IB city. Useless military leaders giving away oil blocks like pure water; giving contracts to stupid UNSERIOUS people; while fighting the SERIOUS leaders. After 1999; the soldiers and their greedy cronies have continued in the leadership of Nigeria; it now seems like a wild imagination that there was ever SERIOUS leadership in this country. But, there once was! Some even wish for white recolonization of Nigeria: what a pity!

Nigerians rather plefer Babangida to rule them than this cocaine sniffing vagabond. He can even rule Nigeria from his wheel chair in minna.

Babangida is the kinda leader Nigeria needs now to reengineer the economy and fight insurgency. Don't forget, Babangida is a retired general he can fight insecurity very well.
