A Nigerian pharmacist, Emeka, has shared a shopping list from the 90s with prices of some food items.

The list dated April, 1990, shows that a bag of rice cost N350, Garri - N125 while a crate of egg was N25.

“I just stumbled on this shopping list from the 90s. Note that the items in this list were purchased in bags and not small quantities. This is to show you how bad things in Nigeria have become,” he wrote

Bag of Rice N350 in 1990 but now ~N100k.

Many people erroneously think the huge price difference is only as a result of inflation.

Yes, inflation is a contributing factor but the continuous increase in Minimum Wage without corresponding increase in Productivity is actually the major reason. If you check well, Min Wage in 1990 was N250. Today it's N70,000.

So instead of Govt to fight inflation, they keep increasing wages & each time Min Wage is increased, prices will also increase & the cycle continues.
That's the major reason we are in the current mess we are.

1990 is 34 years go
That's too far Tho despite global inflation, other advanced countries maintain minimal percentage of increase.
Just check price list of 2015 that GEJ handed over to what OBAT has given us in the name of renewed hope

Bros btwn may 2023 when PBAT was sworn in and now presently august, 2024 the price of rice increased from 30k to 100k, and they have not increased or implemented minimum wage o, within this period.

So what caused this inflation? So as you can see your argument lacks merit, it is not valid.

Mr man just say terrible management of the economy by this regime.

Endemic corruption in high and low places, corruption of values, corruption of reward system. Lack of patriotism, disunity, economic sabotage, we can go on and on

If this corruption monster is tackled head on, trust me in 5 years, we will pay our national debts, and begin to lend to many nations instead of borrowing as we are currently doing now.

Yeah you are right, prices were stable at same level for long period of time.

For example some biscuits remained N5 for years.

But now .... lipsrsealed

Fake list. People and the deep desire for attention. Forged information. How can price for grunding egusi be the same as the price for bag of garri. We were alive in the 90s and things were far more cheaper than this

Matches in the 90s 26 Naira. For real ? And people would fall for this crap

Nigeria has deteriorated so much.

26 naira for matches? Is it for the carton or just one box? I want to know.

We're essentially saying same thing. All what you listed are the things causing inflation. But instead of Govt tackling inflation, they are increasing Wages which further fuels inflation.

True prices have increased in Nigeria but do most of these shallow mumus also know that prices increase in universal.

Even in the US with the largest and best economy in the world - I still remember vividly a time in the 80s and early '90s when with $100, your cart will be filled up. You will need help to carry all the food inside your house.

Now, you can carry $100 grocery with 2 fingers. We are talking about the US now. Just imagine what is going on in the other 3 world countries of which Nigeria is one.

The Nigerian population has gone through the roof. People are just giving birth to babies without thinking of the consequences of their actions.
Right now, Nigeria is a very poor country and the situation is made worse by the fact that most of the population are corrupt, greedy, selfish, and unethical. Unfortunately, the vast majority think that if only their top politicians can be honest, then the country will be ok while they are still corrupt.

A country made of corrupt people cannot have honest leaders, your leaders are a representation of who you are.

Well, things might not have been as bad as they are currently...!

But, if you must compare, do it intelligently by factoring in:

1. Exchange rate
2. Population
3. Employment rate
4. Inflation Adjustment

Inflation is very much normal. Prices can't stay the same anywhere in the World. The problem is that Nigeria's inflation rate seems to be the highest in the World right now.

No need to compare today to the 90s. Things were even better in 2020 even though Buhari was a monumental failure

1999 too far, 2015 when I started my apprentice we sell a carton of 20leaves exercise books (ctn contains 24 packs, each pack contains 18pcs) for 2500 naira.

As I speak with you now 1 packet is 1700 naira
And a carton is 40,000.

That's what you get when you choose tribalism over competence..

I always tell people, an average igbo man doesn't care about your tribe if he sees you're more competent than his blood brother, he won't hesitate to make you his manager over his own brother. Na Yoruba and hausa dey carry tribe for head
