Akpabio said he did a drainage system. I don't know who to believe.

But is it not possible to construct a state or city-wide drainage system or say Lagos does something like the Dutch did?
Which drainage?

Oga u can't do drainage for one street... U can either to a region of the city and TV stand must be close to an exit point

Google American ghetto or what they call projects, it looks like Gwaripa in Abuja where two bedroom goes for 2+ million naira.

Like a man said, when you visit overseas, your prayer points for Nigeria must change.

Corruption not taxes is the reason. Corruption is the reason why we cannot build such roads, the same Corruption is why there is no functioning refinery, why there is no 24hr electricity, pipe born water etc.
All the state governors are uniformly corrupt?

Including Alex Otti and the rest?

It has nothing to do with corruption or ignorance. Many of our leaders are well traveled so they know this. It is just laziness. It is so much easy for them to build roads with only their vehicles in mind and build deep gullies they call gutters by the sides. They don't bother themselves with pedestrians since they think pedestrians are not important in road infrastructure.

You don't need extra money to build roads with sidewalks. It's true that Nigeria is very poor in terms of govt earnings, but the issue of bad road construction and city planning is not due to lack of funds, but the absence of govt standards. In developed countries, if you construct a building different from the approval you've received, it'll be demolished. But here in Nigeria, aside Lagos and Abuja, there are no city planning building regulations, so people just build their houses anyhow they like without following any patterns.

Was corruption in Netherlands then more than what we have in African countries now, and was it more damaging to productivity of the populace generally huh

Does cholera happen in Kigali as it does in Lagos due to lack of tap water despite years of growing revenue and loans, just like the other 35 states?

What is the ratio of free public schools in Kgali and Rwanda generally compared to Lagos and our country generally huh

Does Kigali have a similar sanitation problem like the one below?

A 45-year-old resident and father of three, Mr.Fatai Lamide told PUNCH HealthWise that no building in the community has toilet facilities.

The Oyo State-born mechanic said, “We don’t have toilet in this area, including our compound. This canal that you see serves as toilet to all of us living in this area. We defecate inside nylon and throw it inside the canal.

“For people that don’t want to use nylon, they have a special bucket that they use after which they pour it inside the canal too.

Inflation is the problem. Pushing Nigerians into poverty. Before APC van in how much was the exchange rate?

In the 70 to 80 nothing like subsidy. It was introduced after inflation. Bihari remove subsidy more than twice but inflation brought it back. Tinubu remove subsidy but inflation brought it back.
So what is causing inflation?

Not entirely the basis for having such poorly constructed roads. If so, why are there no such similar well-constructed roads in oil-rich states?

While I do agree that the economy has to grow so public authorities have enough funds to embark on such projects, the existence of states with huge oil windfalls or those with a low population base compared to how much they receive as allocation refutes that notion.
I think what is needed is a National Standard for building roads in metropolitan areas.

A bill at the National Assembly can be introduced which prohibits the building of metropolitan roads without pedestrian walkways and covered drainage, and compels every state to cover a certain percentage of its gutters every year till they are all covered, with sidewalks also built where space permits.

Within a few years open gutters would be history, with sidewalks everywhere.

When these useless entities we call state governors build their roads, it looks nothing like this picture below.

This is the standard way you build a road in any metropolitan area.

There is the road for driving, and then there is a sidewalk for pedestrians.

Then below the sidewalk is the drainage.

The sidewalk hits the wall so it blocks out all sand, meaning the road is SEALED. You don't even need to sweep it.

The drains are covered, so no need for ''ENVIRONMENTAL DAY'', with citizens digging out MUCK from filthy open gutters.

NOW HERE IS THE QUESTION:

What is so hard about building our roads like this??

I LAUGH when I hear Nigerians talking about attracting TOURISTS to the country.

In fact some of you should be stand-up comedians.

NO TOURIST goes to a place where the roads are not built like this road below.

TOURISTS do not travel to a place in order to ride around in cars.

They are there to WALK.

And WALKING is not supposed to be 'SUFFERING' as we regard it here.

It's meant to be enjoyable. PEDESTRIANS are also TAXPAYERS and deserve their own road infrastructure, along with drivers.

Do you know that when you build roads with wide sidewalks, you can walk up to 10 kilometres and not feel it?

But with these useless roads we build with no designated walking space, you can't walk up to 1 kilometre without looking for okada or taxi.

That's why everyone is so desperate to own a car.

How many gutters will you jump?

When will these so-called state governors finally become CIVILISED like their counterparts all over the world?

Norway avoided the Dutch disease as per the article below.

You are yet to answer the question about corruption in Netherlands linked to the Dutch disease and how it compares with corruption here. Can you answer if you can, otherwise I will assume that you know nothing about the subject.

The bonanza could have been catastrophic. When countries focus all of their land, labor and capital in one area, other industries suffer. But Kasim encouraged technological research that achieved 45% extraction–20% more than the average. Norway also was able to use the technology beyond the oil fields. Its spillover helped related industries to develop and grow:

On the spending side, the Norwegian government eventually exhibited considerable discipline. Here, I like to think of Odysseus. Tied to the mast, he could resist the Sirens’ song. Somewhat similarly, Norway limited what it could spend. It said 4% of a normal return was the max it could directly receive. Otherwise oil revenue had to expand domestic production. And when it grew too large for that, they said it had to be used outside the country.

The result? Norway limited its dependence on oil. Yes, it would suffer when oil prices plunged. But still, the country had a buffer.

Below, you can see how the fund invests and compares to others:

Our Bottom Line: Dutch Disease

The oil industry reminds us what a commodity boom can do to an economy when it employs the best land, labor, and capital. As it blossoms, other industries wilt. At home it’s tough for non-oil businesses to pay for increasingly expensive resources. Abroad, a nation’s currency appreciates when international markets clamor for the new commodity. The problems start because that stronger currency makes other exports less attractive.

Then, it gets even worse when other industries disappear and government depends on oil revenue for social welfare spending. When the boom turns to bust, there are no replacement industries to fill the void, government money dries up and the source of consumer spending and incomes contracts. It happened in the Netherlands during the 1960s and ’70s (hence the name Dutch Disease). At this point we can call a windfall a curse.

But not for Norway.

My sources and more: If you read one extra article, do look at what FT columnist Martin Sandbu says about Farouk al-Kasim. From there, the possibilities include this LSE summary of a Norges Bank study and this paper on the origins of Norways’s sovereign wealth fund. Also, Norsk Petroleum had more details on oil revenue.

mrvitalis does make a point.

In UK, Fuel duty is currently levied at a flat rate of 52.95p per litre for both petrol and diesel. 20% VAT is then charged on both the duty and the standard price while Nigeria subsidises.

Unleaded is £144.76p. Enough to make one protest if charged in Nigeria. Road tax is £190 per annum.
How is all that equal to 50% tax on TOTAL personal income that he said huh

Add tax of 20% on your income above £12,570 and 40% if over £50,270, plus 20% vat on any expenditure, plus community charge, and you'd soon arrive at pretty close to 50% tax or more.

Is the tax rate on ALL income or after allowable deductions?
Is the 20% VAT rate on every type of expenditure or some are exempt like food, books, children's clothes, health products, fuel, heating and car seats for children?
Is there a VAT on savings and investments as well?

If all this extrapolation to justify the falsehood about paying 50% tax on TOTAL personal income is true, then why are blacks flooding cold & racist UK instead of staying home to fix our countries?

You flood there because you don't know how to fix our country, and you get value for the tax you pay.

You get good free education and healthcare till you are 16. Roads and transport are good. Police and fire brigade are efficient and protective. You can buy a thick affordable jacket and heating to mitigate the cold, and the racism is not as bad as some make out. You'd likely get more racism being an Igbo in Lagos, and there'd be no police to complain to.

And after all the tax, you'd be better educated and employable if you invested in self education, and you'd have money left over to send to your family back home.

Why send your family back home to where you have not made efforts to develop with good free education, healthcare, police, fire brigade etc?

Any response to the 50% income tax question that was justified with 20% VAT, which is not applicable to everything?
