Power Generation Hits Three-Year High Of 5,105MW by Salewa97(op): 12:35pm On Aug 08, 2024
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has announced that Nigeria’s power sector generated 5,105 megawatts of electricity on July 27, 2024, describing it as a three-year high.

Adelabu announced this at the inaugural meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Power Sector Working Group in Abuja on Wednesday.

While highlighting the recent achievements and future goals for the power sector, the minister said, “Just a few days ago, on July 27, we successfully generated and transmitted 5,105MW of power, the highest in the last three years. This is an improvement from the previous capacity of around 4,000MW or below.

“Our target is to achieve a landmark generation and transmission of 6,000MW by December.”

To harness the economic potential of Nigeria’s power sector, the government ministers at the meeting called for increased collaboration across various ministries and sectors.

They emphasised the sector’s crucial role in driving economic growth and industrialisation, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s vision.

Adelabu underscored the necessity of inter-ministerial collaboration to achieve these objectives.

“Power is not something that should be left alone to the Ministry of Power and its agencies. There are many supportive ministries without which we cannot achieve our mandate,” said Adelabu.

He said the power ministry is working closely with the Ministries of Environment, Water Resources and Sanitation, Budget and Planning, and Petroleum Resources, particularly the Minister of State (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, echoed the sentiment, stating, “The Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Power are like brothers and sisters. We will do everything possible to work together to achieve the renewable energy agenda of the President in making life better for Nigerians.”

Addressing the need for sustainable energy solutions, Adelabu highlighted the role of renewable energy sources.

“We are focusing on generating power in a sustainable and environment-friendly manner. This is why we talk about renewables, through solar, wind, and small dams,” he said.

The Minister of Environment, represented by Minister of State, Iziaq Salako, emphasised the environmental impact of power generation and the importance of managing waste generated in the process.

“As we go ahead to develop our power sector, we are also developing a process to manage the waste that will come out,” he said.

Adelabu outlined the terms of reference for the working group, which include activating seamless power sector liquidity and financing, providing guidance in the governance structure of electricity distribution companies, and focusing on the energy transition programme to achieve net zero emissions by 2060.

The collaborative efforts are set to not only boost power generation and distribution but also ensure that the benefits are felt by households, businesses, and industries across the country, the minister explained

Useless leaders!

Egypt that had some constraint with power generation in June was generating 35,000 mw.

Cool. I laugh when people mention the small increase in electricity supply is due to rainy season. Thats a lie coz most of Nigeria plant is thermal.

So how does thermal and rain relate?

5000 MW for 250Million people, not even war ravaged countries are this
Re: Power Generation Hits Three-Year High Of 5,105MW by Throwback:
Shame on Nigeria.

Shame on both PDP and APC.

Since the Obasanjo 2nd term through Yar'Adua/Jonathan regime and then Buhari's 8years APC rule, we are still talking about power generation capacity that has refused to shoot far beyond 4000MegaWatts.

If Tinubu concludes his 8yr regime and we cannot boast of power generation beyond 10,000MW that is still very poor, then I would know that it is a deliberate plan by the ruling class not to grow our electric power capacity.

That’s a thing of shame truly. But our leaders since 1960 failed to do what is right.

So if Tinubu minister is celebrating increase in supply within 1 year, you don’t need to dampen his morale.

Yes, they can do more and Nigerians still need access to stable power. I hope things change at least for the better in the coming years.

If President Tinubu cannot add 1000MW for every year in office, then it would be a very big failure on his part.

Nigeria's power is anchored by hydro. That's why every year, between May and November, power is very regular, due to the rains. We can only say there's an improvement when our power generation hits 10,000 mw, not now that it has continued to revolve around 4-5,000mw. This is not supposed to be rocket science.

Only a mad man would see progress and choose otherwise.

I am certain that even the worst tribalist, would still be able to acknowledge effort and results they benefit from.

No be statistics we go chop, like Tinubu said. Let us feel the impact.
