After Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year tenure was overthrown by a student-led insurrection, Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus returned to Bangladesh on Thursday to assume the role of caretaker government leader. Soon after 2:00 pm (0800 GMT), Yunus arrived in Dhaka from Paris via Dubai. The army chief has promised that Yunus will lead the nation through a “beautiful democratic process,” and he might take office as president as early as Thursday night. When security forces opened fire on demonstrators seeking Hasina’s resignation a week ago, it was nearly unthinkable that Yunus, eighty-four, would be standing next to military officials. Hasina was forced to flee to neighboring India when the military betrayed her over the weekend, as millions of Bangladeshis rejoiced in her death. I think Bangladesh might be on the path to greatness with their revolution. They seem to be getting it right with this. An interim headed by a non partisan technocrat after a people's-led revolution. God will do it for Nigeria too, whether lovers of bad governance like it or not. |

lyndire:I think so too. The military has demonstrated maturity and professionalism in handling the political crises caused by the resignation of the run-away Prime Minister. The only difference with the Nigerian situation is that we have not had a sit tight leader that needs to be booted out of power by the people, unlike the one ruling in Bangladesh for 15years. People get to vote every 4years, with a presidential term limit of 2 terms. Those who have lost election should learn to wait for another 4years. |
