Soon the talent and brain drain will start affecting other sectors not just sports.

Top performers always show up regardless of externalities
Soon?!!

Please, name one sector that hasn't been diminished by Brain Drain!... I will wait.

Do you know how many top and excellent health care professionals have since left Nigeria?!!

Just look at the political and leadership class... No technocrats, no brains, no patriots, infact... No Leaders among the political class!

Truly saddening. Our public schools are dying, soon the aviation sector would be grounded, this I have seen

Sad!

The best brains from Education down to Engineering and Medicine are either out of the country or about to flee!

The real catastrophe or fallout of this massive brain drain hasn't even started yet.

It is hard to fault Obi on this one. Very disappointing.
The private sector that should be promoting and supporting sports are busy endorsing weed and drug users, musicians, nudity shows like BBN.

Am not surprised. Immediately I see this pictures of them. Without ibos honestly this nation is doomed in all. From sports , to all.

In sports, the area designated as Biafra are the place most super eagles , etc came from. What a shame
That is why the whole of Igbo land is like America. Good schools, constant power, best health sector in Africa, best roads, best in everything! Tribalist!

You cannot because you are a nitwit who does not stand the Law of the Lid...

Just like I said the country will continue to lurch from one disgrace to the other until people like you become an insignificant minority...

Obi said nothing but the truth, every sector of Nigeria is so corrupt, the system needs total overhauling, this corruption in our sports from football to athletics is full of corrupt leaders at the helm of affairs who takes bribe and pick those who are not competent enough to represent Nigeria...take a look at that Nigeria coach sanusi who was taking bribe to feature players, that's just one among many...
Corruption everywhere. This is what OBJ was saying earlier that most Nigeria leaders is supposed to be in prison on executed, I can bet that they didn't even spend half of that money on the athlete but on their self....what a shame

I don't want to believe that Peter wrote that....but alas he did. He's as empty as they come indeed. Do these guys really understand opposition?
It's about conscientiously critiquing and providing alternatives.
It's not about opening your gutter so they know you're still around. Must you talk?
Is Peter aware that they qualify for Olympics and it's not by invite, where a country nominates mediocre to represent them?
That Nigeria has 88 reps means Nigerian athletes had competed to qualify, and they qualified!
Please Peter, explain "large contingents, favoritism, recklessness and rascality". Ignoramus. And your minions, who don't think too, jumped on the nonsense you wrote.
No doubt Nigeria performance was disappointing. But it's not that athletes were mediocre!
I'll recommend that Nigeria
1. spur representation in sports with many medal potential.
2. Supports athletes off major events so they compete well before major events.... And of course if cost of the Olympic campaign can be further reduced, please do!

You are very right. I actually saw him training sometimes ago so I thought he will be competing in an event as a youth to guarantee us a medal. I am surprised Tinubu did not allow him to participate even with all his sporting skills.

I feel the athletes should have been arrested on arrival at murtala muhammed airport.

With 24 strokes daily for 6 months, they would be more serious at future competitions.
How you go blame dem.
Most of the athletes representing us are not even Naija based.

How can they win when the government hasn't made any consented effort for them to deliver. Japanese has a population of less than 130 million people and they won 25 medals or even more. With 200 million people which Nigeria boost all the time, they couldn't win any medal. Nigerians population is quantity, not quality. Kenya 🇰🇪 even won some medals
Japan won 45 medals.

Australia 26m people, 53 medals and 5th overall. That’s remarkable.

A case of talking so much but saying little. LoL. Even recommending what people better and more qualified than you have done and given up doing. PO analyzed the rot in our institutions which we keep window dressing year after year with the paint of tribalism and religion. Bulk of the D'tigress team have no allegiance to Nigeria, it's just a platform for them to express themselves. Who trains them? What's the level of FG's investment in Amosun? Ofili nko? But bigoted folks would rather hail those using our national resources on frivolities. The fabrics of a sane society is dead and buried in Nigeria. My only prayer is for God not to allow Nigeria to bury the dreams of the kids of those who seek and pursue the highest good.

PS: A friend is selling properties to relocate his son to purse a sporting career he's gifted in. Meanwhile, countries like Morocco and SA have developed a a grassroots system that is helping build future talents, just like Spain. Nigeria will continue to be a disappointment in the comity of nations.

Well, has Peter Obi expressed his own disappointment in losing the 2023 presidential elections?

How many times did he support the athletes?

In his lamentations, he failed to proffer solutions. He only claimed the money spent on athletes was more than what was spent in the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Because I am all for solutions and no lamentations, I like to propose as follows:

(1) We can't prepare for an event three months before when we had a clear 4-year window. We need to start preparing for the next Olympics NOW!

(2) We have certain events where we have comparative advantages. For example, swimming amd canoeing. The Niger Delta folks with preparation can easily shine here. Some people expressed surprise that break dancing was part of the Olympics. I am reasonably well traveled and I can say Nigeria has some of the best dancers in the world. We can also stand out in archery and diving given adequate preparation.

(3) We also must revive Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA), Nigerian Polytechnic Games Association (NIPOGA), Principal's Cup, National Sports Festival and get corporate organizations to participate.

(4) All tertiary institutions must make two sporting activities compulsory for students, even if it is chess. It helps the mind.

(5) Let universities provide full scholarships for talented student-athletes. They can look for a sport-loving corporate organization to endow such a fund.

(6) As a matter of urgency, let people who are truly passionate about sports take charge of sporting federations.

(7) Let us look at countries doing well and copy what they did. By identifying talents and grooming them, we can make it.

Let me start by stating that I am not disappointed in Team Nigeria. Despite the fact that the female basketball team, D'Tigress, were blocked in the last Olympics by one sports minister, they made a good showing in this year's Olympics, defeating Australia and Canada. Rene Wakama made a brilliant showing and won the best coach at the Olympics. Favour Ofili, we are sorry it did not go as planned. Train harder and you'd only get better. We'd support you the best way we can. Blessing Oborodudu, you came close the last time. We hope you'd get even better. Ese Brume, you won for us before; we have faith in you. The male relay team, you surely learnt your lessons and would avoid the mistakes next time. For the weightlifters, please work harder. For those I might have forgotten, those of us who have had to represent others understand the pressure you faced carrying the burden and hopes of a country.

I believe I speak the minds of sensible Nairalanders and Nigeria when I say:

WE ARE GRATEFUL!

He said all the truth in this piece as said by dem MANNA.
Obi is a good boy in this case.

Even small countries like Kenya, South Africa , Uganda, Zambia, Egypt, Jamaica all went home with medals what excuses will apc government now give, did the previous administration also kill sports or did the fuel price increment also impact on sports deliverables.

Very soon Nigerians will realize that apc really has nothing to offer Nigeria in any sector they are performing woefully. Economy is contracting at the speed of light , security sector is already gone , sports sector has shown it is degrading.

Infrastructure is not doing fantastic.

The only thing that seems to be working in Nigeria is the attempt by urchins like Reno , onanugs etc to scapegoat igbos into the descent of the apc government into obscurity
when it comes to olympic medals, nigeria is not in the same league with kenya, SA and Jamaica. they are not small countries when it comes to the olympics especially Kenya and Jamaica. Jamaica focuses on sprints and has done well historically and has made life difficult for american sprinters. kenyans are undoubtedly the kings of long distance. how then are you able to compare nigeria with them?
