If you have the phone number of the person, you can catch the person using a bait

If you meant ''Transfer airtime from your account'', how did the person got your pin to buy airtime and besides didn't you lock your phone?

When the person transferred the airtime, at least the number should show in the debit alert you received as sms

There's practically no way of catching this criminal then, because informations like the i.d, contact if provided would have provided a way to getting this person

And by the way, are you telling me that, you don't know this person?

You should start by interrogating the person whose place you went to charge the phone. Does he allow random people access to phones which do not belong to them?

I complained to my bank and they told me that the person collected the money through airtime. As in the person used my phone to collect 6k airtime from my phone and then transferred the airtime to his personal line. I'm planning to call my airtel line customer care so they can provide the number for me if possible

Scam Alert: 1xpos is a scammer. You are advised to desist from engaging in any business transactions with them.

I transferred money to them since on 5th August by 5:37 pm. More than a week later, I'm yet to receive value for my payment.

Sorry that happened to you. That’s theft and unauthorized access. You can take action, but you’ll need to move fast.

*Here’s how to trace it and protect yourself*

*1. Contact FirstBank immediately – 24hrs*
Call *0700 FIRSTCONTACT (0700 34778 2668228)* or _894# > Customer Care.
Tell them:
- Someone made unauthorized airtime purchase of ₦6,000 from your account
- Date + approximate time it happened
- You did NOT authorize it

*Ask them to:*
1. Block your USSD banking on that line if you haven’t already: Dial `_894_911#` from any phone to block.
2. Give you the transaction reference/beneficiary number the airtime was sent to. Banks see the number the airtime was credited to.

FirstBank can tell you: “Airtime of ₦6,000 was sent to 0803xxxxxxx at 2:15pm”. That’s your first lead.

*2. Contact your network provider – MTN/Airtel/Glo/9mobile*
Once you have the number from FirstBank, call the network’s customer care:
- MTN: 300, Airtel: 111, Glo: 121, 9mobile: 200

Tell them your airtime was stolen and transferred to that number. Request the name registered to the SIM. They won’t give it to _you_ directly due to privacy, but if you file a police report, police can request it officially.

*3. Go to the police station – get a Police Report*
This is key. Without it, bank/network won’t release full details.
Go to the nearest police station or your bank’s branch and request to file a case of “unauthorized access + theft”.

Bring:
- Your ID
- Proof you own the line/bank account
- Date/time of theft

With a police extract, the police Cybercrime Unit can write FirstBank + telco to release:
1. Full name + address used to register the SIM that received airtime
2. Location where the USSD was dialed from

*4. Check your phone for clues*
1. SMS: Check for FirstBank debit alerts. It shows the number credited.
2. Call log: Did the person dial _894_amount_number#? Some phones save USSD history.
3. Apps: Check MyMTN/MyAirtel app > Airtime transfer history.

*5. Secure your accounts now*
1. Change FirstBank PIN: `_894_0#` > follow prompts
2. Change phone lock screen password
3. Don’t leave phone charging unlocked in public spaces again
4. Enable SIM PIN so USSD won’t work without it: Settings > Security > SIM lock

*Reality check*
1. *₦6,000 is below EFCC/police threshold* for high-priority cybercrime, but theft is theft. Police may still help, especially if you push.
2. *The culprit likely used your unlocked phone*. If it was someone close – housemate, shop staff, sibling – the number the airtime went to will expose them.
3. *Bank may not refund* because your PIN was used. USSD airtime is treated like cash withdrawal with PIN = you authorized it. But if you report within 24hrs and claim your phone was stolen/accessed, some banks refund on goodwill.

*Start with FirstBank now* – they’ll tell you the number that got the airtime. That’s 70% of the tracing done.
