What Is Wrong In Asking Someone "How Was Your Night?" by angel106: 11:12am On Nov 28, 2012
Hello my dear nairalanders, can you kindly contribute to the topic. A colleague of mine came to work and was pissed at the response she got when she innocently greeted a friend and asked her "How was your night?".

The friend flared up and asked her to stop asking her such question, that why would she want to know how her night was? That why was she interested in knowing what she did with her husband shocked.

Na wetin concern dead body with overload?

To me, it is just a simple remark of knowing that you had a good night rest without troubles. But i can be wrong, so my dears....you have the floor.

Thanks.

U arent wrong...D question simply means no harm...Perhaps dere was something eating her up and she jut nided something as simple as a greeting to burst it out. Its nt people say and how dey say it dat matters but how we respond to it.

Actually, some people take it personal when asked 'how was your nyt'. My senior colleague told me its very wrong to ask an adult 'how was your nyt'?
To be on the safer side, just ask ' Hope your nyt was gud. Or did u sleep well?
Because people are different.

well well well..guess some people just decide to think with the other side of their brain..something simple they turn it to soin serious...SMH..even if she wasnt in d mood,a simple "fine thank you will do".people just decide to be unecessarily difficult.

Me thinks that question too loaded. . .

I once asked a female colleague at work that same question, she didn't take it as anything but the stares I got from the those around was like I was flirting with her.

Since then, I no dey ask am again

I have a colleague too who usually takes offence when asked 'hw was ur 9t'. But she doesn't react harshly like urs did. Asking 'hw was ur 9t' has become so much a part of us that we use it anyhow without actually thinking of the meaning. However the right thing to say is 'hope u had a good 9t rest' or 'hope u rested well'.
I will also appreciate meaniful comments on this

What so you expect when most Nigerians are naturally aggressive, lack courtesy, decorum, tact and read meaning into every gesture :-( :-(

" How was ur Night" has become a Cliche gretting .

A cliché or cliche (UK /ˈkliːʃeɪ/ or US /klɪˈʃeɪ/) is an expression, idea, or element of an artistic work which has been overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect, especially when at some earlier time it was considered meaningful or novel. - wikipedia

I dont see anyting wrong with the question. Its just an innocent question. even if one did anyting that nite, all u just have to do is answer 'fine' ( as in my nite was fine ), and dats it, life goes on. My tot is, if anybody flares up at that question, then that person's conscience is disturbing him/her for dat person must have done sometin wrong dat nite.

You may not understand why this has got me puzzled but it’s the
second time I’ve been asked that question in a month, and you know I
am not a rude guy so I’d like to be prepared for the next time I hear it.
And believe me, someone will ask me the same question possibly
tomorrow morning after tonight’s intended bar-crawl.
The first time was as I checked out of an Akure hotel. After a bliss
night sleep in a hotel room with blue blubs, as I handed over my room
key to the receptionist (not quite a concierge), she softly goes to me
“How was ur night?” I wanted to respond “It was dark,”, or perhaps
“…noisy thanks to the scratchy speakers of your Faji bar”
So I started thinking perhaps it is me that have a problem with the
question, in that case, let’s imagine the responses of other people &
professionals.
Professional 1 – Prostitute: “How was your night?”, “Well, I borrowed
a married man for the night, it was quite sloppy”
Professional 2 – Bus conductor: “How was your night?”, “I don break
bottle finish…”
Professional 3 – Landlord, “How was your night?”, “Half of my duplex
tenants dey sleep for free…”
Professional 4 – Female bank clerk, “How was your night?” My
husband ate suya for dinner.
Between “How was your night?” and “…I’m on phone”, will I ever
expand my vocabulary in this office? Sigh.

Too much oyibo culture is beginning to affect us.
Africans "shows" love and care in the way they interact, whether they truly mean it is another thing though.
How was your night is one way we show our concern albeit in greetings.
Picking offense at such cool questions shows we are even beginning to adopt oyibo mindset in our affairs, which is unlike us "imo"!

I feel it is wrong to ask except you interacted with that person about supposed events of that night before the night in question

The "How was your night question" does not mean any harm. But in my office we have turned it the other way round. If you ask someone "how was ur night" the first answer is " what part of the night do you want to know about". So it makes u wanna think twice when u going to ask someone that.

Nigerians and their love for unnecessary drama, smh.

Well I don't see anything wrong in\with the question though its better to just say "Good morning\how are you?"

Btw, why the woman dey provoke sef? I guess something been dey make her vex before the question, she's even lucky she was not asked "How is your last night?" like someone keeps asking my friend grin

It is overfamiliar and seems appropriate if the person is a guest in your house/hotel etc.
Just like DID YOU SLEEP WELL?? There has to be some basis for asking such a question either friendship or some shared accommodation.

At work or any formal occasion a simple hello or Good morning should do or the appropriate greeting in your Nigerian language.
Even in the Nigerian languages I know you do not ask HOW WAS YOUR NIGHT? as a greeting and certainly not to a casual acquaintance.
Anyway personally I find it irritating when I visit Nigerian hotels and they ALL ask ,without exception, that very question. Surely there must be other variations??

Seconded.

I dislike that Jamb question.
I think it should be meant for couples. whereby the other travelled.

What if the person went to bed with empty stomach and u're asking such question.

My reponse to all these question is "Normal Normal"
