Every time, the bad thinking people will like to attribute Lagos success to one thing or the other to seve as excuse for their own failure and unwillingness to thrive.

They will say federal government deliberately diverts all ships to Lagos abandoning the ports in their region.

Or

That Lagos was former capital territory that's why it is thriving

Now

Kaduna houses most federal government institutions, why is kaduna not as developed as Lagos.

Calabar was former capital of Nigeria under colonial rule, why is it not as developed as Lagos?

Ogun state is second to Lagos when it comes to IGR and number 1 state with most manufacturing companies, yet it was not a former capital territory.

Secret of Lagos success

The secret to Lagos success are:

1. The geographical location of Lagos and the water. Even when Oodua was blind, Ifa oracle direct his children to get sea water to wash his face. One of his son, came to Lagos to fetch the sea water. And the son was then nicknamed Obokun (the on one who brought sea water) and there after became king in Ilesha, osun state. Till today, people of Ilesha are called omo obokun.

Economically, lagos sea is very deep, it can carry any kind of vessel. This is the reason why importers and exporters prefer Lagos ports.

2. The visionary leadership of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Eg his free education placed south west above other regions

Ikeja industrial estate was Awolowo initiative

3. Accomodations: Lagos indigenes like their Yoruba brothers welcomes none indigene without any discrimination so far they are able to maintain peace and grow the economy of the community.

4. Good governors right from time: Lagos has been blessed with visionary military and civilian governors. People of Lagos will always remember Bubba Marwa, lateef Jakande, Tinubu and his successors.

5. Peace: importers and exporters prefer Lagos ports because there is no case of vandalism, sea pirates, militancy on Lagos waters
All the huff n puff, but we're still looking for what you own in Lagos. 🔍

The talk was marvelous. But what did you 🫵🏾
Contribute to this Lagos 🤔 we're still searching 🔍

The guy who created this must be a Yoruba man, you need to be educated to have a good critical thinking skills in order to discern why things happen I'm the society.

N/B Calabar was never the capital of Nigeria and has never been one.

Calabar was the administrative capital of Southern Protectorate from about 1884 to 1906 when the administrative capital of the southern protectorate became Lagos. Also note that Lagos became a colony on 6th August 1886. Lagos was the capital of Southern Protectorate from 1906 to 1914 and became the capital of Nigeria from 1914 to 1991.

Also note that Nigeria had only two capital Lagos and Abuja, Calabar was like a regional capital for the south likewise Lagos pre amalgamation. Calabar was a regional capital for 22 years (1884 to 1906) while Lagos was a regional capital for 8 years (1906 to 1914) and then capital of Nigeria for 77 years (1914 to 1991) totalling 85 years.

It's only a dumb folk who will say Calabar should be like Lagos because it was the administrative capital of the southern protectorate.

Let's ask the writer to tell us what was the benefit of Calabar when it became administrative capital of Southern Protectorate? And then tell us what Lagos benefited for 85 years as sit of power and see why his reasoning is like that of a 2 year child.

Calabar had nothing, southern protectorate of Nigeria as a region wasn't abundant in wealth as at the time Calabar became capital, Calabar became capital not because of its economic importance but because that's was one of the places the colonial masters touched down Calabar 2 years before it even established Lagos as a colony in 1886.

Investment by the federal government of Nigeria in Lagos runs into hundreds of billions of dollars which no state has gotten even 10 % of it. To get the picture of what a capital can do for you, look at Abuja that started as capital in 1991 after the relocation from Lagos it has left all other places behind dude to the number of investment attracted by been the capital of Nigeria the investment is massive. That was what Lagos enjoyed but Calabar never enjoyed it for one day. Calabar was just a regional capital when the country had no accountability for its finances.

Lagos has been developed by the collective wealth of the country to an extent it now drives itself because of its strategic placement in the international shipping lane. Every other state close to Lagos should be able to develop as a result of this. Lagos has limited landmass and the smallest state in Nigeria that is why Ogun has been the biggest beneficiary of Lagos because all industries placed in border towns of Ogun state was just of its strategic closeness to Lagos state.

A lot of you need to get educated before speaking, i have seen some even compared Lagos to Port Harcourt a town that has never tasted been capital of Nigeria for a day. You lot should put your thinking faculty before coming to a public forum.

Calabar was the administrative capital of the Southern Protectorate of Nigeria this was because the British came there first before they went to Lagos and then Lagos took over as capital of the southern protectorate before it then became capital of Nigeria in 1914. Lies!

Calabar and Enugu were never former capital of Nigeria.

Lagos was built by the colonial govt and fg govt with Nigerian resources
DevilsEqual:
cheesy

Lagos was wholly built by the Western Regional Govt. Awolowo is up there as one of the best ever

As for Calabar and Enugu, they are a true reflection of the locals

God bless King Dosunmu and Kosoko. All their actions laid the solid background for what we are seeing about Lagos in 2024

Re: Calabar Was Former Capital Territory, Why Is it Not Developed As Lagos? by DMerciful(m): 2:15pm On Aug 14, 2024
Lagos was a colony on it own different from western Nigeria. It was amalgamated to the other protectorates in Southern Nigeria before being joined to the North
Biodun556:
Why did they prefer lagos to Calabar?

Something must have informed the colonial masters that Lagos is the best place to stay
Re: Calabar Was Former Capital Territory, Why Is it Not Developed As Lagos? by DMerciful(m): 2:18pm On Aug 14, 2024
Capital was never moved from Calabar to Lagos because Calabar was never capital of Nigeria.

If you merge Togo, Benin Republic and Ghana together as one country and the new capital is Accra, will you say you moved the capital of the new country from Lome to Accra?
LifestyleTonite:
Do you think the white man was stupid when he moved the capital from Calabar to Lagos? He knew what he was doing.

Lagos had always been blessed right from the day God created the earth. It was blessed in that it was situated on the coast with access to the Atlantic Ocean. All of that made it a thriving city even before the white man came.

The Yoruba people figured the land out on time and laid claim to it. The white man came and saw what they saw, then decided to move his capital to the land. Shebi Calabar also has access to the Atlantic Ocean. Yet the white man dumped Calabar for Lagos. That's the same way your people dump your region for Lagos. It's all because of what the land offers.

Take away Yoruba people and the white man from Lagos and the land will still be prosperous because God blessed it to be so. Luckily, the Yoruba people had foresight and so they claimed it and made it theirs. There's nothing anybody can do about it. Calling it a no man's land for a million times a day won't make it so. Wake up and smell the coffee.

All the kings, Baales, chiefs, culture, towns, tradition, rulers, leaders of the state are Yoruba. If I were your people, I will wake up from my slumber and stop being covetous. It's impossible to steal a land in this day and age of information technology.

As for Lagos being developed by the FG, I won't disregard the fact that the FG played a huge role in what Lagos is today. However, you need to ask yourself what area of Lagos was controlled by the FG in the days of Lagos being the capital.

The FG controlled Lagos Island and VI as FCT. The other parts of Lagos was under the Western region controlled by Awolowo who developed it. The sage developed it with industrial estates, companies, free education, etc. To wake up now and claim that what we know as Lagos today was the FCT is a lie you really need to stop telling yourself.

Lagos is Yorubaland and is in their SW region. The SW doesn't care if Calabar is finer than New York, because we move st our own pace.

I'll advise your people to channel the energy used in dreaming about stealing Lagos towards developing a Lagos in their region. You people need to stop being on this wild goose chase. It makes you all look foolish and ridiculous before other tribes.

I know my words won't sink in because you people are hopelessly covetous. But note that you will never wake up one morning and see that Lagos has become a no man's land.
