You need to be very careful. Some GSM phones, even unlocked, are not compatible with Nigeria network.

That's not always the case. If the phone(Bandwidth) is not compatible with Nigeria network then there's nothing that can be done.

Sell the phone and buy other phones that work in Nigeria

You can try and get it unlocked. Most of the phones I've used over the past 10 years are from the USA. For some of them, you can get unlock codes which you enter into the phone(like *unlock code#) and it's unlocked, some work for Nigerian sims right out the box, no unlock/or unlock code needed while some won't work no matter what you do. The latest one I got is a Samsung A01 from Verizon, it worked right out the box, but the band I keep seeing is E/Edge which is somewhere between 2G and 3G. Good luck
