Not really. Reasonable number of Northern muslims don't take alcohol. Though few, very few of them secretly do.
A lot of Nigerian people in the north take alcohol. Hisbah cannot stop them

In 2022, the Kano Hisbah destroyed over three million bottles of assorted beer as part of the state’s efforts “to address drug abuse, intoxication, and other social vices”.
Lol do you believe this nonsense? Those guys abuse drugs far removed from alcohol

I'm sure you meant - so this argument is strong because in addition to the cost of the alcohol and bottles destroyed, they are incurring additional economic waste by expending resources on the destruction.
The cost on law enforcement is not regarded as economic wastage. The Hisbah was set up by law as a law enforcement agency. So it would argue that if the crime wasn't committed, the funds spent on the enforcement of bottles breaking would be used for enforcement of other laws and not that the funds will be returned to the treasury.

I think the Hisbah should confiscate and fine the culprits heavily then handover the bottles to NAFDAC.

To destroy such huge number of bottles itself costs a lot of money so this argument is weak since they are equally expending resources to destroy the bottles.

Confiscate and handover to NAFDAC to destroy, on what grounds exactly? That bear is illegal in Nigeria? Is there any law in the Nigerian constitution against selling and buying bear ?

@bolded. Really? Funny.

Yes, the cost of law enforcement is not regarded as economic wastage. But that's because law enforcement protects the public and prevents economic losses. Now, we're talking about superfluous enforcement, the enforcement of waste.

Beer is considered haram in the state. If you are not looking for trouble, go sell your beer in other states. The punishment is expected to have been taken from the Islamic books. Giving it to NAFDAC is a way for NAFDAC to use regulatory powers to further sanction those manufacturers shipping their beers to a Sharia state. It's irresponsible and the law breakers deserve greater deterrent. Sell your beer elsewhere for God's sake. Haba.

What kind of a comment is this? Nigeria is not a religious state (either Islamic or Christian one). It's a circular one. Why are we hypocrites in this nation? We have Boko Haram killing fellow muslims and taking hard drugs and raping women and children, is that not a sin in the Koran? So how does allowing those who are not part of your religion drinking beer if they want to become a sin more than the others mentioned?
Re: Court Ask EFCC To Prevent Beer Bottles Destruction, Says It's Economic Sabotage by mamaafrik(m): 8:10am On Aug 18, 2024
islamic hypocrisy is when you destroy beer and still collect VAT from from the back door.

Hypocrisy is when quran say a non -muslim guy is forbidden to marry a muslim lady but say there is reward for a muslim guy that marries a non -muslim .

Hypocrisy is when a Muslim guy can easy pick up Bible and criticize it but a christain is forbidden from reading Quran.

Hypocrisy is when a Muslim is allowed to contribute and rubbish a Christian thread on nairaland and same cant be done by a Christian.

Why should a sane person consficate a beer? Isn't that also an economic sabotage?

These people smoke and sniff all kinds of substances, but their only problem is beer and not cocaine or cigarettes or Igbo.

Kano has 44 LGAs. It's very expensive to cover by Hisbah. I am sure the enforcement of other laws apart from bottles breaking needs attention. I believe that many of us are not knowledgeable about the Sharia law. The breaking of the bottles may have been the recommendation from the Islamic rulings. Giving to NAFDAC will still be considered based on Islamic law books. It's not even an absolute alternative to breaking the bottles. The Islamic Law authorities and experts will advise accordingly.

Most people commenting on this thread are bloody hypocrites why did you bother too much about northern internal affairs Wetin concerns you with this you already said we are a abokis and illiterate with low purchasing power so why continue smuggling alcohol to an unproductive region why not sell your beer in Aba or enugu in peace, instead of risking your money by sending them to people that continuously say they don't want it,. It is part of our culture for centuries where at this time most of you were wandering naked in the jungle doing nothing but drinking beer and dancing and you can't change that we don't take beer take it simple

Botragelad:
Have you ever heard about separation of state from religion? 🤷‍♂️
This nonsense of "respecting" religious beliefs.

Let's be clear: if someone's religion prohibits them from consuming alcohol, that's their personal choice. But to say that the government should segregate tax distribution based on religious permissions is an overreach. Why would you want to impose religious doctrine on secular institutions?

So will you also demand that the government withhold taxes from states that permit gambling, given that some religions frown upon it? Or maybe should restrict access to certain medical procedures based on religious objections? Think!

If some individuals choose to abstain from alcohol due to personal beliefs, so be it. But to impose on everyone makes no sense.
Is this a Nigeria thing? Read it's a secular country.
Too late to cry over a spilt milk.

The man you idolise (Obasanjo) allowed the establishment of Sharia in Northern Nigeria.

You all should have protested against it when he granted them the right to run sharia laws in a secular country like ours.

What Hisbah police did is very very wrong.
Since they don't want beer in their states, beer manufacturer should stop taking it there simple
There are people who are not Muslims who live and work there. It's not a crime for them to consume beer as long beer is not illegal in Nigeria which those states are still part of.

If they don't want beer to be brought into their states, or moved through it, then they should leave Nigeria, and be free to make and adopt their own constitution.

This your contribution is how we enable nonsense. Let's stop enabling nonsense.

If their religion does not permit it, then so be it. We must not impose our culture on other people.

Government should just ensure FIRS segment taxes on alcohol separately and get them distributed only to states that permits consumption of such products.

Simple!
If every region in Nigeria starts implementing and forcing the adoption of only what their religion permits on all the people in the state, regardless of whether they are members of the religion, and regardless of whether it contradicts the constitution, do you think we will still have a country called Nigeria?

If destroying alcoholic beverages is an economic sabotage, what about destroying houses/buildings used as kidnappers' den/hideout.

How is it justified?
...and it seems to be a common practice in the East especially.

I suppose some extant laws would have to be amended to support this?

The court making a pronouncement on this is a start.

And I hope the FG through Efcc, Firs & Attorney General and minster of justice will collaborate to put a stop to this economic sabotage.

If some states do not want beer and any other alcoholic drinks to be sold or drank in the state that's okay. FG should just restructure it's revenue sharing formula to exempt such states from benefitting from tax generated from alcohol businesses.
