Nigerian Nurses’ Job Applications Blocked In US, Canada Due To Government’s Suspension Of License Verification The Suspension Of License Verification Services By The Nursing And Midwifery Council Of Nigeria (NMCN) Has Led To The Rejection Of Applications From Nigerian Nurses Seeking Employment Abroad. According to a report by SaharaReporters on August 16, hundreds of Nigerian nurses are currently stranded as a result of the continued closure of the NMCN’s online portal. The portal, which is essential for verifying and registering nurses as qualified practitioners in Nigeria, was initially shut down by the NMCN leadership on December 22, 2023, without any clear explanation. Despite reopening on February 7, 2024, the portal remains inaccessible, effectively halting the verification process for new nurses and leaving many in a state of uncertainty. This ongoing closure has particularly impacted nurses who applied to work in countries like the United States and Canada, with their applications being rejected due to the inability to complete the necessary license verification. The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has expressed deep regret over the situation, noting that numerous Nigerian nurses have been turned away globally because of the portal’s closure. The NMA has criticized the directive from the House of Representatives that instructed the NMCN to indefinitely suspend license verification services. The association warned that this decision effectively prevents Nigerian nurses from practicing abroad, equating it to a form of “mass kidnapping” that confines these professionals within the country against their will. In a statement posted on its official X handle on Monday, the NMA described the situation as an “unprecedented infringement of nurses’ fundamental human rights.” The association further condemned the directive, demanding an urgent reconsideration and urging the government to respect the rights of Nigerian citizens to either live in or leave the country as they see fit. The suspension has also affected Nigerian nurses’ applications to various international healthcare institutions. In a letter dated August 15, 2024, the Texas Board of Nursing informed a Nigerian applicant that it had halted the application process for all Nigerian candidates whose verification of licensure from the NMCN was missing or expired. The board stated that the NMCN had notified them of an indefinite suspension of verifications and emphasized that there is no alternative to having this verification on file. Similarly, Alberta Health Services (AHS) in Canada informed a Nigerian applicant that it could not proceed with offering a job until the NMCN resumed license verification services. The College of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador also rejected a Nigerian applicant’s submission, citing their inability to log in to the applicant’s account for verification due to the NMCN’s suspension of services. https://reportafrique.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/71F94F40-7210-4818-879C-F83A036FFAA5-800x730.jpeg https://reportafrique.com/news/africa/nigeria/nigerian-nurses-blocked-in-us-canada/ |

Blocking the site isn't the solution. The FG should reach a deal with healthcare professionals to pay back some fees to Nigeria for some time for getting nearly free education from public institutions. People spend over $100k to train as nurses in America and you pay peanuts in Nigerian universities and still want to run away to practice in those countries. Unblock the site and have those nurses pay $5k annually for 3 years for developing nursing schools, funding research, building more nursing schools in Nigeria, etc. This isn't about emotions; this is the way it should be. You cannot keep taking from your country, not want to give back and you are still surprised why your country isn't growing. |

SmartPolician:What you are saying doesn't make sense at all. Nigeria is an oil producing country, other oil rich countries don't tax their citizens but Nigeria do. The subsidy on tertiary education tuition fee in Nigeria applies to all courses and fields of study not just nursing alone, so why should nurses be the only ones to pay such demonic fee you are suggesting? Every country in the world offer some level of subsidy to their citizens, all European, American, Canada, Australia and even Asian countries have government food bank outlets where you go to eat if you can't afford food. They have different forms of palliatives even to small scale business owners. Their citizens enjoy high level of subsidy on tuition that make them pay over 50% less than international students and they also have access to various forms of student grants and scholarships that can make you study for free if you are brilliant and serious with your academics which we don't have here. Have Nigerian government stopped tech graduates from migrating abroad in droves? Do you know how many tech professionals that left Nigeria, especially from banks, etc, why didn't they clamp down on them and tell them to pay the demonic fee you are suggesting they charge Nurses? What about Engineers, Teachers, etc migrating too? Is subsidy on tuition fee that virtually every country on earth offer to their citizens to encourage more citizens to embrace education too much to do from our huge crude oil wealth these political leaders loot and plunder on daily basis? What else do Nigerian citizens benefit from Nigerian government if not these small subsidies? You guys need to be objective in your thinking, everything is not about politics. And don't you know that the foreign direct and indirect remittances these healthcare workers that migrate abroad bring back to Nigeria is part of the reasons Nigeria's economy haven't collapsed completely with how the corrupt useless demonic Nigerian political leaders in government have been looting Nigeria's treasury? These people bring back huge FOREX to Nigeria and also contribute to sustaining millions of Nigerians in Nigeria and you are here talking rubbish ![]() |

franchasofficia:Abeg, rest! Which other countries are you talking about? What's their population? You want to use the $40 billion you make from oil/gas annually to maintain and secure a country of 230 million people? Dey play! Coming to tech, what do tech people even learn in Nigerian universities? They teach you Fortran and QBasic that the world dumped over 30 years and you still spend a lot of money acquiring real skills from IT institutes! Tech degrees are totally useless in Nigeria! Nigerian government is already subsidizing education, petrol, electricity, healthcare, etc. How many self-employed people and businesses pay taxes in this country? For those who pay taxes, what percentage do they pay? People in some of those countries you say get subsidies from government pay up to 30 - 50% of their hard-earned money in taxes! Will you or anyone agree to pay that in Nigeria? In short, this entire country runs on fraud, hypocrisy and self-deceit. Everyone wants to keep taking, taking and taking and nobody wants to give back. Surprisingly, those opportunists still wonder why the country isn't working. I still maintain my position though. God won't come from heaven and fix this country. We have to devote our time, resources and efforts to make it work. If you say a politician steals public funds, how are you any better than the politician if you cannot give a fraction of your earnings to make your country work?! |

SmartPolician:For your information, those in corporate organized job pay between 30 to 35% tax in Nigeria which ends up being looted by the same lunatics parading themselves as government officials in Nigeria. I pay tax. My small company pay tax. What pains me most is that I pay tax to criminals who loot the money and do nothing with it. If we have an accountable government that utilizes public fund and taxpayers money to truly develop Nigeria for the good of all, believe me more Nigerians will be happy to pay tax. I have already told my account guys to find a way to cut down on our annual tax return to this criminals in APC because the tax we pay is a waste. So don't even go there. Tinubu's led demonic government is on a mission to destroy and impoverish Nigerians with thoughtless policies and senseless decisions like shutting down of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria verification portal. It has no direct positive impact on Nigeria. They claim is to curb brain drain but then you wonder how because these demons haven't employed all the qualified Nurses in Nigeria being churned out from Nursing schools and colleges of nursing on yearly basis but here they are working foolishly hard to stop Nurses that wish to migrate abroad to grow their career, better their lives and even to further their education. They have no moral or whatever right to do that if not that Nigeria is now a complete shithole nation ruled by charlatans and criminals who used stolen public money to impose themselves on Nigerians through electoral frauds and whatnot. There are hundreds of unemployed and underemployed Nigerian nurses in Nigeria have Nigeria been able to employ them all? Do you senseless Nigerians even appreciate and value these Nurses? Some have worked for Nigeria for over 5 years, some over 10 years with little to nothing to show for their hard work and efforts, and when they try to make move to migrate abroad to better their lives and that of their families before they hit retirement age, the demon possessed Nigerian government stops them from migrating using draconian laws and policies of shutting down their verification portal and gullible and inhumane Nigerians like you are here supporting such evil and given senseless excuses and suggestions to support this demonic act by the NMCN ![]() |

Max24:How patriotic have the leaders in Nigeria been, especially the presidency. Nigerians are suffering massive low purchasing power yet they are building houses they do not need, buying new jets up on over 10 that is available on the Presidential fleet. I can go on and on. people are trying to better there generation and you are talking about patriotism as if our leaders considers that when they loot and build abroad instead of here. If they have been building their refineries here we will not be talking about fuel scarcity and no jobs for our engineers. How patriotic are they in taking their healthcare here in Nigeria. they will budget for clinic here and still take their medicare abroad… So who is fooling who. The earlier we tell ourselves the truth the better for us |
| Re: Nigerian Nurses’ Job Applications Blocked In US, Canada Due To NGR Government by ivolt: 2:15am On Aug 21, 2024 |
SmartPolician:Even if the FG paid nothing tos subsidize medical education, it will still be a paltry sum compared to the $100K you mentioned above. After all, we have private schools with medical courses and we know their yearly tuition. Moreover, any such pro-training slavery deal will be trashed by the court, it only takes one nurse to challenge it. First, the FG would have to justify why an accounting, agriculture or law graduate is not blocked by the same rule and most importantly, why it did not sign a contract to that effect during student's admission. |

SmartPolician:Instead of addressing the problem with our Healthcare system the government has decided to trap healthcare professionals, They won't patronize the same system when they are sick and pay doctors peanuts for their services. You are here blabbing about near to free Medical training. No medical training institution is free we pay to get trained, renewal of certificates, writing exams and even to advance in our career. You can cry that the economic situation is the reason why government has not been able to pay healthcare workers their due wages but as of recently the salary of judiciary worker was increased by 300%.... Until health care professionals unite across all levels to shut down the healthcare system until government gets it right. This will still go further that is the persecution of health care workers desiring to travel out. It has even gotten worse now they kidnap doctors and request huge sums of money when a medical officer receives 250k with Abeg.... This country is really a joke. |

The first thing to do is to minimize the earnings of politicians, like the president, senators etc. Let them lead by example quit medical tourism. |
