Resident Doctors Begin Nationwide Strike by Kosiso12(op): 8:03am On Aug 26, 2024
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared a nationwide 7-day warning strike, commencing on Monday, August 26, 2024, at 12 am.

The strike is in response to the abduction of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna.

Dr. Dele Abdullahi, President of NARD, announced the strike during an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council.

“The strike is total, and there will be no concessions or emergency care during this period,” he said.

Dr. Popoola was kidnapped on December 27, 2023, along with her husband and nephew. Although her husband was released in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity after eight months.

Recall that NARD members protested against Dr. Popoola’s abduction on Thursday, August 15, in Lagos. The demonstration was organized by resident doctors of Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta.

It’s heartbreaking to be in kidnappers den for that long but why are those doctors always going on strike for everything? Insecurity is affecting every profession in Nigeria and not limited to doctors alone. So ASUU should go on strike if a lecturer is kidnapped, all banks should shut down if a banker is kidnapped, soldiers should go on strike if a soldier is kidnapped, markets should shut down if a trader is kidnapped ?

Govt should tackle insecurity and make sure everyone including the doctor in kidnappers’ den is freed!

Doctors should stop going on strike for things like this, many people will die because of their action. The masses who are also suffering from kidnappers will suffer more with this.

They should be reasonable!

8 months? Are you sure she's still alive? If she's still alive and there's evidence, the security agencies should move in and rescue the victim.

The two Pharmacists that have big drug stores in my area have both japad out of Nigeria.

It's just their sales boys and girls that are in their stores now.

The more experienced Pharmacist even employed a graduate pharmacist to stay in his own store in Nigeria while he controls the business from the abroad.

Na that one tell me say Oga don Japa.

Though the Pharmacist's still run their businesses from their new country's.

It is well.

8 months is such a long time, hope she's still alive. But why put innocent lives at risk by going on strike? Even kids in pediatric units will suffer for this. Nigeria is a ticking time bomb cry

Searching for the sense in your writeup - I can't find any....not a tiny bit.

How can somebody be kidnapped for eight months and we pretend all is well...the governor's even did owambe wedding in taraba over the weekend - those are the chief security officers in the states.

Government should have declared state of emergency on security..it's an attack on the sovereignty of the nation for people not to be able to move freely without being kidnapped and killed... undecided

Do these dimwitted bastards who have contributed nothing to the medical field realise that all Nigerian citizens including their very patients in their various hospitals are victims of kidnappings?

Every group should now go on strike when armed robbers or bandits kill or kidnap their members.

The kind of airheads and idiots being called doctors in this country is horrifying.

But again, it doesn't require brains anymore to be a doctor in Nigeria. Just get the money and connection and you're in

Ur wasting time replying that person.

If we continue like this, it means no life is important when kidnapping occurs.

If other people take it and swallow it, doctors will not.

Someone will just be kidnapped and government cannot track the person with all the NIN and other security things put in place

Ur not making sense.
As it stands, the government doesn't care about any life kidnapped. Should that be the case, no matter how isolated it is?

Let them go on strike even if it's for 1 baby.

We must do the needful I'm the country.
What happened to NIN? And other security measures?

If it were to be the child of a governor u think they'll not rescue him/her?

So because other kidnappings are happening and people are quiet, it means everyone has to be quiet?

You can’t see because life is difficult for the blind.
Are doctors the only ones being kidnapped in Nigeria?
How many other professionals/trade unions have u seen declaring strike because their members are kidnapped?

So why not declare the strike in his state? Why should someone in faraway Bayelsa suffer for the sin of kaduna state governor? Use your sense, many pregnant women, children, sick people,’poor Nigerians will die because of this strike.

The kidnapped doctor shall be rescued by the power of God, but will the lost lives from the strike be replaced ?
