Omo Eleribu, Omo Ale, Omo y'Ibo....did Japa syndrome start during Tinubu or Buhari's Presidency ? Ask your god forsaken parents if they are old enough to know about the massive Andrew Check-Out of the 80s. Ask your grandparents how and why Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikwe, Tafa Balewa received Western education in the 50s/60s too. Racoon: |

Families are dying in Nigeria everyday, kiddddnapping, hunger insecurity, but they are seeing each other without being able to help each other. Japa still better. Make we dey enjoy the video call and occasional visits with peace in our hearts that family members are doing ok wherever they t |

madridguy:Some of the japa people are simply suffering from complex. Most of my classmates were extremely rich before they left. Some raised over 500m from sales of their businesses and properties. I am more than comfortable to leave here. If it's education, we produce better doctors and pharmacists. Their own products struggle to pass our professional exams. I am a member of the Royal pharmaceutical society. It was easy to pass. Many of them are not even doing well. If not back to the naira as a weak currency they are not rich per se. |

So in essence we should die in this concentration camp, where poverty, insecurity, inadequate health facilities etc all because we want to be with our families. I am very sure whoever put this up is a mole of NOA. What if our original families are in Europe, probably it was a switch at birth that landed most of us here . Migration is inevitable for mankind, people flee wars, hunger. Although the wars nowadays are not the bow and arrows, canons guns or even the accllaimed nukes When your environment does not support your mission on earth move if you can. Finally migration to me self is not only an overseas thing, how can you stay in a state in Nigeria for almost 30 years, no job in sight, no career advancement. You too, move to another state, you are not a tree. |

On a good day, there's nothing like the joy of having family, kith and kin and the extended family mechanism around. The psychological benefits cannot be over emphasized. Little wonder emotional needs and family connectedness featured prominently on Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of needs. However, the situation at home makes it not just necessary but imperative to find solutions to our economic challenges in a different geographical canvass. Over 200 million starry-eyed and active people with so much unspent energy, plagued by the worst leadership on planet earth cannot wait for these drunken and irredeemably useless leadership to continue to mess their lives up. They have just one life and they have to make meanings out of their lives, hence the need to seek better opportunities elsewhere. Final analysis: Legit Japa is good but as much as possible, stay in touch and visit regularly as it is convenient for you. These days, real time video calls have to a large moment reduced the void. |

CyrusVI:Those without strong nuclear and extended family bonds will not understand. For them, "japa " is a means of forgetting their families and the problems of their kinsmen. For us with deep family orientation, the fact that my children will not be able to bond with their cousins, uncles and aunties is worrisome. Some have already lost the connection with their kinsmen, tribe, language and culture. |

UbongCR7:There are uncles, aunties, and cousins I never saw for years in the very same Lagos o. Some people keep better touch via video calling with people outside Nigeria than with their families within the same States in Nigeria. Relationship transcends distance. Op needs to be more balanced! The breakage and distance among families today start within the country, long before Japa. Cousins and Siblings are no longer relating closely as their parents did decades ago! This is beyond Japa... There is something fundamentally wrong with family relationships in Nigeria today. This is a discussion we are not all ready to have. |

Painful as it us, but Nigeria didn't give most people a choice. The best we can do is make it count somehow. Thanks for this writeup. It stirs the heart and reminds us of what's really important... family. |

OldSkoolHeadBoy:The moment he started blaming Buhari and Tinubu for the wave of japa, I knew he’s Ibo in his late twenties or early thirties For your info, japa is a Yoruba slang for depart and has been used before you were born. It was referred to as “Ja” as far back as the 70s, 80s, and 90s and losing friends/family connections to the diaspora is not a new concept either The recent wave is due to the liberal immigration policies of the West and it’s gradually coming to an end as they begin to adopt anti immigration policies |
