djseanjohn77:You didn't get what the writer is trying to artculate. You got it all wrong! The writer never even criticised migration or "Japa". Read it again, slowly and reasonably. It is alright for you so (you think) you have residency and all but not the same for others who cannot even afford to "japa" or your families who only sees you physically maybe once every 2 years. Cheers! ![]() |

press9jatv:Exactly! Every Naigerian seem to believe that ,"japa" is the solution rather than confronting their government on the "bad" situations in their country. |

In all, Vote good leaders, Nigeria is not a failed state, we just have clueless leaders who wants to control crude oil. If we cultivate 14 million hectares of Oil Palm today just oil palm, we would eradicate all poverty In Nigeria, now imagine we support SMEs, develop infrastructure, in 4 years , Nigeria can challenge Indonesia and Brazil. Vote Peter Obi. |

Racoon:This is not an issue per se. if the children are buoyant enough, they should be coming back either once or twice a year to see their parents. Meanwhile, they should be video calling them every week aside normal day to day calls |

I don't care because I already hAve my mind made up & willing to sacrifice relationships, just to live a better life & give my unborn children a great life. What have the people we've been together able to offer all this while? |

Some of you in Lagos haven’t even seen your native land in 10 years. Y’all don’t even talk to your uncles because another brain dead person like you has convinced you he wants to use your destiny. You can’t even see your aunt and have a wonderful heartfelt reunion without leaving the conversation feeling like you need to take a bath to wash off “the evil eye”. Nairaland people always obsessed with japa this japa that ![]() |

ObalendeCMS:This is exactly what the OP is trying to articulate. Your unborn children a better life in another country, a place that is not really their home country, that means your children would be born abroad and your parents, sisters, aunties and uncles would only be able to see or speak to your children on watsapp and may never see them in persons.. |

Japa is challenging, no doubt. But if you have planned your japa well, you should have a job that allows you to take vacations once a year. Your siblings can always plan their vacation at the same time and you travel home once a year or you all travel and meet in a different country. If you can't japa legally and you travel on a visitors visa, I am sorry, I understand your pain but then this writeup is for you. |

Prettychild:How many people are buouyant enough to visit once a year. The cost of international flights are very expensive. Imagine travelling for 25 hours one way just to see your parents for a few days. No to mention the huge logistics it takes to travel to Nigeria. It's not just something you can plan that easily. I'm speaking from experience as an abroadarian. Japa indeed breaks up the families. As the parents are feeling lonely so are their kids also feeling lonely and away from their culture. Most people japa for greener pastures. Money is important but everything is not all about money. When you Japa you will find out yourself. Make all of una come abeg. And experience it all for yourself then you will understand where the OP is coming from. |

Agree with OP and several other posters. Actually felt very sad reading this because it is so true! Japa is excellent from a career and financial angle but super tough on existing family dynamics. In my experience, people who recently japa'd and are still so excited about escaping Nigeria just don't get it. Give it a while though and trust me you will! I left naija over 12 years ago and while I arguably could not have achieved what I have today from Nigeria, I have certainly seen a lot of family (primarily extended family) links deteriorate. My siblings, cousins and I are all scattered across the US, UK and Canada and sadly I've seen once close relationships become a lot more distant. I have cousins I grew up with who I now haven't seen in 20 years. Several have have kids I've never met. It's a little better with my nuclear family but even with these loved ones I grew up in the same house with, I'm realistically only able to see them once or twice a year. Personally, it's less of a cost to travel issue and just the effect of crazy time zone differences, how busy adulthood gets and just the super limited amount of time you even have to travel to another country to see family. I remember growing up in naija when my Uncles would stop by after work almost every day to join us for dinner. Even with those who lived in other cities, I would typically see them several times a year due to various family gatherings. We were all so close! In my opinion, the lucky ones are those who japa'd with all their siblings at the same time and/or were able to japa to a location where they already have a decent amount of extended family and as such were able to establish a strong presence in another country. I see families like that all the time abroad and can't help but feel a little jealous. They are all mostly based in one general location (e.g. the US or UK) and are able to maintain stronger in-person bonds. Even when they do have to travel to see each other, travel from DC to NYC is certainly a lot easier than travel from DC to Lagos. In conclusion, It is what is. I wouldn't change anything from the japa angle. My family and I are 1000% better for it financially but boy does It suck though knowing that I will probably never have the same relationship with several family members. |

They just play and color and have a good time and play with tab. It's quite maddening! They hardly hold pen to write anything, the hand writing terrible, attention span zero! No discipline, highly entitled, see I no fit talk abeg. Living in abroad but your children still doing online lessons from Nigeria because they don't learn much here..
