AlbertoIancu:How far man. Sorry I haven't been on nairaland for a while. Just seeing this. Can we talk here if you don't mind. I think what you wanted to know then was tips for freelancing. The best site you can use is Fiverr. It's friendly to us Nigerians as well. Once you sign up take some time to look at the free course they have to offer. Forgot the name but only one is free so you'll know when you see it. It teaches basic rules of freelancing and gives good information on how to secure clients and do well on the website. You mentioned that you do either proof reading/writing. I'll drop some links to Telegram channels were you can download courses for free to learn another skill. You can also check 1337x.to for free courses. The freelance market is competitive but if you pick an area that has demand but not too many people are doing it, you will chop well. Anything like video editing, Adobe, 3D art, coding, whichever you want. You can check each job category on Fiverr, any area that has less than 6,000 people is good enough. Once you have a new skill, post good pictures and or videos. Charge low prices at first to entice people to pick you. After they have left good reviews you will be a hot cake. Freelancers with reviews are always preferred so you will get better and higher paying jobs. You can now set your price to the same as the competition. Be polite to the people who message you and they will come back with more jobs for you. Another tip. Download the Fiverr app on your phone, open the app and never close it. This way the app will show you as online. Most clients usually search for freelancers who are online so it works in your favour. If there's anything else you want to know just quote me again. |

McHuey:Wow, this was super helpful, bro. Actually, I wanted to discuss about something different if you don't mind. I've worked as a freelance writer for two years and I'm a bit established in my niche. But I would like your advice about moving out of my parents house. I'm 25, done with uni and NYSC. Making around 200k monthly. My fears are connected to being suspected and profiled as a Yahoo boy due to the nature of my work (staying indoors all day). I hear of police raiding houses of guys with no visible source of income but living fairly well. It's easy to see how a freelancer can fall victim to that. What would you advice? Is it better I stay in my parents' house until I get a physical job? |

AlbertoIancu:Summary: If you have other reasons for wanting to move out other than police and you can find an affordable place that's in a guarded estate, then you can move out. Otherwise, it's best to stay with your parents for the time being. Details below: I don't know how your area is but from what I've experienced whether you have a physical job or not, police don't care. Their mentality is whether you look like a Yahoo boy or not and how they can extort you. Also not every physical job gives ID cards and sometimes you can leave your ID card at home. What then? Having a physical job is good to supplement your income but if the only reason you're getting it is to avoid police then it's not really worth it. At the end of the day it's just money they're looking for. Whether you're an honest working man or Yahoo boy doesn't concern them. Believe me if Yahoo boys tip them, that's their new friend. I used to see these police escorting them sometimes when I'm on the road. In my side so far as you don't dress like them or wear dreads and you're not flashing wealth, they'll leave you alone. I dress lowkey most of the time I go out. No watches, jewellery, nothing. Only thing I've experienced is those police that like to stop drivers for papers. But that one is everywhere and as long as you have all documents and you talk properly they leave. What you need to look at is areas to avoid. There are places where they are concentrated and places that are lax. Again, I can't speak for your side but when I hear of raids it's usually at known Yahoo boy hangouts and not their personal home. Check well for which areas are safe and I would advise living in an estate with good security. There are quite a lot these days where if you don't have a code people can't enter. If you can't find such a place, it could be a risk to rent a place out in the open. From what you've described it seems to be a rampant issue in your area. Also I'm not sure how much rent is in your side but it could chop your monthly salary unnecessarily. Times have changed; naira is deprecating quickly. It's better to save and invest your money at this point in life. You're doing good for your age brother. Keep it up. |
