The USA started as a settler-colony of Britain, the settlers rebelled against Britain and went on to expand their colony through genocide. Russia on the other hand, went through the usual steps of how a country comes into existence: expansion. From house to clan, from clan to village, from village to city, from city to kingdom, from kingdom to larger kingdom (or empire).
