As we arrived at the Obasanjo International Market in Oluyole, the broiler price suddenly crashed to a staggering 600 naira per chick. This unexpected drop led to significant losses for many of us who had already purchased chickens from various hatcheries at the earlier price. Sadly, this isn’t the first time we’ve faced such a situation, but it doesn’t make the losses any easier to bear.

The Aftermath on August 29, 2024

The fear of another potential loss was still fresh in everyone’s minds on August 29, 2024. This fear discouraged many marketers from purchasing Amo’s products, especially broilers. Zartech even set a rather high price of 850 naira per chick, knowing full well that the previous market day had been disastrous. It took considerable effort from one of Zartech’s close associates to convince the decision-makers to adjust the price. (I won’t name names, but let’s just say it starts with a “B.”)

Agrited, on the other hand, set their price at 865 naira per chick, including vaccination. These are the factory-controlled prices, and even if you contact me for birds and I’m overbooked, I’ll ensure to source them from my trusted associates. The most important thing is that you receive healthy, quality birds.

If you don’t stand your ground, you might miss out on what you need to buy, leaving your money untouched in your wallet while others snatch up the goods. This struggle is all too familiar at Amo; while the company reaps the benefits, we marketers bear the brunt, especially when the network fails us at the crucial moment, leaving us unable to pick up birds.

But being a sharp guy, I quickly switched to the best network available in my area, determined to stay ahead of the game. I needed those price updates to plan my next move for tomorrow, Monday, September 2nd, 2024. The Amo price update came later than usual today—around 1:48 PM. It was unusual, perhaps because they were deliberating on a marketable price or consulting with others. But, even before their official update, a friend had already sent me the prices, so when Amo’s message finally arrived, it felt more like a confirmation of what I already knew.

Rumors have been swirling that a major player, whose name I’ll keep under wraps, is about to flood the market. Everyone’s on edge because we know all too well that when supply outstrips demand, the market crashes—and we’ve seen that happen too many times.

As I was wrapping up my day, Agrited’s prices finally came through. If you want to stay ahead in this game, here’s the breakdown:

– Amo: ₦800

– Zartech: ₦800

– Vertex: ₦820

– Fidan: ₦810

– Agrited: ₦865 (plus vaccination
Other branded broilers are in a similar range, but Agrited surprised me by listing the highest price when their update came in on the evening of September 1st, 2024. It caught me off guard.

But keep in mind, your seller’s price may vary—these birds often pass through the hands of three or more marketers before they reach you, each adding their cut to the final price. So, don’t be disheartened if the price is a bit higher by the time it gets to you.

The broiler market has been full of surprises and changes over the last three market days, and it’s truly been an incredible journey. We’re heading into what we call “the season,” a time when farmers everywhere are preparing to stock their pens in anticipation of high demand. This shift means something big—soon, demand for broilers will surpass supply, and those of us in the poultry business know what that entails.

On September 5th, 2024, at Oluyole International Chick Market, things were buzzing with anticipation. I wish I could give you a full picture of everything that went down, but keep in mind that this vast market operates in different sections across various locations, all governed by the Day Old Chicks Merchants (DOCMAN). Each hatchery sets its price, and it’s our job to communicate that to you, our valued customers.

As always, we were on edge, waiting for the hatcheries to release their prices. Even Amo—one of the big names—delayed sending their price list, causing a ripple effect. Some experts have predicted that prices this ember season will continue to trend upward, which may seem like good news. However, as we know, these trends can break at any moment, and when they do, it’s usually us, the marketers, who suffer the most losses. Our constant prayer is for the strength to carry on, no matter the conditions.

The price of broilers is crucial, but making the best decision is what will ultimately save farmers millions in wasted resources and manpower. Now to the broiler prices! On Sunday afternoon, 09/09/2024, I was taken aback when Amo released their prices. According to Amo’s table, each broiler was priced at ₦930, while Amo DOC (Day-Old Chicks) wrote ₦940 per broiler. This difference in margin is too wide! I’m calling on higher authorities to look into this matter because for those of us without direct access to the Amo table, we’re already facing a deficit of ₦10 per bird. It’s the same product, yet different pricing! Fidan listed broilers at ₦960, and Agrited went as high as ₦1,075, plus the cost of vaccinations. This price discrepancy left those who could pick broilers directly from Amo feeling more than lucky yesterday, 09/09/2024.

As we look to the future, I pray hatcheries don’t raise prices any further. A market crash is always a looming possibility, and if it happens, I hope we won’t be among those who face the fallout. Almighty God willing, we will endure.
