Why Airplanes / Aircrafts Have A Hole In The Back Of Their Tails by Racoon(op): 1:07pm On Sep 13, 2024
What is the hole on the back of passenger airplanes? The hole at the tail end of the aircraft? Yeah, this is the exhaust port of the Hidden Powerhouse of the aircraft. This is also known as the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU).

Auxiliary power unit is a small turbine engine located at the tail of the aircraft. It too uses the usual Aviation Fuel from the aircraft's fuel tanks. The APU is started, when the engines are not running or the plane is not connected with an external power source.

The APU is switched off after the engines are started, as it is no longer needed. Sometimes, the APU is kept on for air-conditioning purposes during takeoff, as engines’ bleed air is not used for AC during takeoff (specially at hot and high operations). The APU is again started after the plane exits the runway after landing. This is because, immediately upon reaching the gate the external power source may or may not be available and using the engines for running the A/C and electrical system is not at all economical and is totally impractical. Therefore, the APU is kept on in such cases.

On a small jetliner, such as an Airbus A320 or a Boeing 737, the APU uses fuel at the rate of 160–200 kg/h. On the other hand, a big Jumbo Jet, such as a Boeing 747 or an Airbus A380, uses fuel at 400–500 kg/h.

Functions of APU—
-1). Supply high pressure bleed air to air conditioning packs while on the ground.
-2). Provides electrical power to the aircraft, while the main engines are switched off.
-3). Provide hydraulic and pneumatic power to start the main engines of the aircraft.
-4). Can be used to start engines while the aircraft is in flight.

Hope that you have got your answer. Thanks a lot… 😊

Check out any average commercial jetliner. If you look close enough, you'll noticed that it has a hole on the back of the tail. It's called the auxiliary power unit, and it's the smallest engine on the plane. But that doesn't mean it serves a small purpose.

It provides the necessary power to start the plane's engines and lift off the ground. Without the APU, there's not enough energy to start the plane's main engines.

The main engines require so much energy that they need the APU to give them a little boost in the beginning. Once in the air, the APU is shut off and the main engines take over.

The hole you're referring to is called an "aircraft tail vent" or "tail drain." It's a small opening at the bottom of the tail section, typically near the horizontal stabilizer or tail cone.

The purpose of this hole is to:

1. *Equalize air pressure*: The vent allows air to enter and exit the tail section, equalizing the pressure inside and outside the aircraft. This helps maintain structural integrity and prevents damage from pressure differences.
2. *Drain moisture*: The hole provides a path for moisture (condensation or rainwater) to drain out of the tail section, reducing the risk of water accumulation and potential damage.
3. *Reduce pressure buildup*: During flight, air can become trapped inside the tail section due to changes in air pressure. The vent helps to release this trapped air, preventing pressure buildup and potential structural issues.

The tail vent is usually designed to be small enough to prevent significant airflow or drag, while still allowing for pressure equalization and moisture drainage.

So, the next time you spot an airplane with a hole in its tail, remember it's not a mistake – it's a deliberate design feature!

Now me too I know what that pigeon hole @ the back of the aircraft signifies. The APU plays a very important role in the the operations of an aircraft.

Deepthoughts:
please just out of curiosity, can plane fly at slow speed like at 40km/hr?
Airplanes are designed to fly at much higher speeds than 40 km/h (25 mph). The minimum speed for most commercial airliners is around 250-300 km/h (155-186 mph), while general aviation aircraft and small planes can fly at slower speeds, typically around 100-150 km/h (62-93 mph).

Flying at 40 km/h (25 mph) is extremely challenging, if not impossible, for several reasons:

1. Lift: Airplanes need sufficient speed to generate lift, which is the upward force that counteracts weight. At low speeds, the wings may not produce enough lift to keep the plane airborne.
2. Control: Airplanes rely on airflow over the control surfaces (ailerons, elevators, and rudder) to maintain control. At very low speeds, these surfaces may not be effective, making the plane difficult to control.
3. Stall speed: Every airplane has a stall speed, below which it cannot fly. Stall speed varies depending on the aircraft, but it's typically around 50-100 km/h (31-62 mph). Flying at 40 km/h (25 mph) would likely put the plane below its stall speed.

However, some specialized aircraft, like:

1. Sailplanes (gliders)
2. Ultralight aircraft
3. Microlight aircraft
4. Some military aircraft (e.g., STOL - Short Takeoff and Landing planes)

can fly at slower speeds, sometimes even below 40 km/h (25 mph), due to their unique designs and capabilities.

Keep in mind that flying at such low speeds is usually only done in specific situations, like landing or taking off in short distances, and requires highly skilled pilots.

Commercial airliners consume a lot of petrol, magine in just 1 hour a B737 will consume the equivalent of 3 kegs of 50litres each...meanwhile I'm here complaining that my SUV consumes too much petrol grin
