Many of you Nairalanders call me Zulu to insult me, which defeats the purpose because I'm Sotho. So, I often laugh at you.

I am a MoSotho and I speak SeSotho. We make up roughly 8% of South Africa's population and historically originate from the snowy mountain kingdom of Lesotho which is ruled by King Letsie III, and is completely surrounded by South Africa, and our national animal is the horse.

The iconic elements of the BaSotho culture are our blankets and hats (which are featured in the Wakanda movie), as well as the horse and snowy landscapes.

It is interesting to know that there are more Basotho people in SA than in Lesotho which has a population of 2.3 million people, compared to almost 5 million in South Africa.

Most Sotho people in SA are concentrated in Lesotho's neighbouring SA provinces of the Free State, Gauteng, North West and the Eastern Cape.

The Sotho people are most related to the Tswana people of Botswana and BaPedi people found in the northern-most province of Limpopo in South Africa. The 3 groups belong to the so-called Sotho languages.

Contrary to the insults on Nairaland, Zulus belong to the Nguni group made up of other tribes including the Xhosa, Swatis from Eswatini and Ndebele from Zimbabwe.

So hope next time you're tempted to call me Zulu - you'll notice how i just don't give a dang.

Shalom.

Enjoy the pics of my Sotho people.
How is this knowledge going to change the price of garri?

Actually thanks for reminding me - BaSotho, through the wise manoeuvres of then King Moshoeshoe, ensured the kingdom remained independent from South Africa and its boer colonial & apartheid systems.

See video above.
So are you a foreigner too or maybe your parents?

The Khoi-San have been able to survive centuries of rustic living. I don't know much about the Griqua

i would like to correct the above from my humble opinion

Zulu-Xhosa-Swati-Ndebele-Technically divergent dialects of the same proto language

Sotho-tswana-Pedi-Technically divergent dialects of the same proto language

Tsonga-Venda-Shona-Technically divergent dialects of the same language family

So technically speaking there are really only about 4 true languages spoken in South Africa.

My humble opinion.

Sothos are originally 'South African'. Moved to higher altitudes (Lesotho) during wars with the ancient Zulus.

You are trying to defend your people. You might as well say the same thing about Ndebele's from Zimbabwe. They too are originally "South African" as well or do you only consider the Shona ones as foreigners?

Comment on things you know about. Free State province in SA is made up almost entirely of native Sotho South Africans. North-West province of SA Tswanas. Mpumalanga province of Ndebele of SA. Limpopo province of Tsonga people also found in Mozambique.

You're trying too hard to push the 'foreigner' narrative. There will never be Chidimma natives in SA 😂😂😂😂

The intention is not to correct but to distinguish. In Nigeria the major languages are vastly different from each other in origin which lends credence to the stance that there were a high number of multiple ethnic groups around the area known as Nigeria today and the peoples that make up Nigeria were highly diverse in origin compared to Eastern or Southern Africa who have more simplified Bantu origins.

Yoruba-Igbo- Hausa are no were close to each other in lexicon or language structure although they sometimes have borrowed words.

Something close to another doesn't mean it's the same thing.. eg. Norwegian, Danish, and Dutch are all Germanic languages but are not the same thing.. so to say South Africa "technically has 4 languages" is a bit of a stretch.

You are actually validating the EFF's and my point about border lines and who you consider as a "foreigner", no?

WannaHowzit:

Well technically Chidinma's mum is Mozambican and owing to the fact that the mfecane spread lots of people across borders there in the south we may never know if she has some Nguni possibly Zulu or Swati blood in her.

If two languages are mutually intelligible, they are both "technically" dialects of the same language. They usually are categorized as "languages" based on trivial factors.

Pedi used to be known as "Nothern Sotho" but the distinct cultural practices allowed for it to be considered a "language" of its own.

There are similar instances in Nigeria where this occurs where two "languages" for example the Etche and the Ikwerre peoples of Nigeria are considered languages of their own when in fact they are "dialects" of a proto Igbo language and are mutually intelligible by an average speaking Igbo person.

Far fetched. I would not say that but you are entitled to your opinion.

Nobody has disputed the similarity within these languages boss, I'm saying they're not the same thing... this is coming from someone who actually speaks some of these languages. they are different languages in their own right

To say SA technically has 4 languages is akin to saying the Iberian Peninsula has one language just because Spanish and Portuguese are similar

shut up ...

. Your largest tribe accumulates just 22% of your gaddem population .. so the rest has to be lest than 22% .. the eswatini tshwane and sotho are not south Africans anymore as they have separated.. So that makes it just 9 nw ..

I think the other guy mention others that I can't recall right now that has also moved on from being south Africans , hence due deduction has to happen ..

Lemme go back to that refresh my memory...

Griqua were actually a group of mixed peoples of European and Khoi people who established their own settlements in and around Southern Africa.

In my opinion, they are essentially Khoi peoples because of the introgression in their gene pool i.e the mixed peoples bred with other mixed peoples and reintroduced higher percentiles of Khoi dna back into their populations.
