I Spend ₦10,000 Daily On Food For My Family – Please Help, I'm Going Crazy! - NA by SKILLZ64(op): 8:50am On Oct 02, 2024
Hello, my wonderful Nairaland family!

I need to know if I’m the only one feeling this heat or if there are others like me out there. I think I might be spending too much, and I need some advice.

For the past few months, I noticed that every single day I spend close to ₦10,000 just to feed my family. It seems like a never-ending cycle.

You want to buy rice, then you need to buy cooking gas, and then you have to pick up something else from the market. Before you know it, ₦10,000 has disappeared! And I’m starting to wonder: “Am I not managing the money well like I used to? What’s going on?”

I have two boys, one girl, and my lovely wife, and feeding them has become such a huge challenge. I don’t understand if it’s me, or if the prices of things in Nigeria have just gone crazy.

Taking care of a family of 5 feels like an uphill battle, and I’m not even talking about other stuff– just basic food!

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love my family, and I’m happy to provide for them, but the way money seems to vanish these days as a result of high cost of living in Nigeria is scary.

Does anyone else feel this way? Or am I just overdoing it?

ADVISE

My Nairaland Family, seriously, any tips on how to cut costs without starving the family would be much appreciated.

Hmmm to be a responsible father in this trying time is not easy.

We share similar responsibilities but mine is better for the following reasons
1. I live in North Central
2. I buy food in bulk esp beans, rice, yam, palm oil, crayfish, fish, tomatoes ( buy grind, perboil and store in a tight container like bama container, fish, maize and millet, soya beans all these items are bought during harvest when their prices are at the lowest.
3. There are food that need to be substituted. E g sweet potato for yam, 3in 1 Cadbury for Milk and Bournvita, Rice for pasta, bake your bread at home instead of buying. You mustn't use electricity or gas to do that, grinded maize instead of semovita.
4. Take your kids to a more affordable school CLOSE to where you live.
Bro the my list is soo long, just have to do things within one's capacity.

Tell your wife to manage anything you can afford and hands off....you will be surprised. It's because you're very much involved that's why they think you have!

Better your wife starts doing something to support you.

Abi u be like those men wey dey form Superman (wifey shouldn't work).

You go just die quick undecided

You wonder why most men die before their wives in this part of the world, it's because of things like this.

Try to by your foodstuffs in bulk. It's much cheaper that way and last longer.

Also encourage your wife to support the home. If she isn't doing anything, dust her CV and work towards getting her something doing.

Buying food everyday to cook in this Tinubu's administration is nothing but punishment. Just do bulk cooking on weekends that can last your family for the next 2-3 weeks.

There is no way a family of five will not spend up to 10k per day, unless you have raw food at home, otherwise you may even spend more than that if the care is not taking
Me and my wife only we spend 6 to 7 per day, because I don't have money to buy food stuff in bucks
Still on a low level

The prices of some things have gone x2, x3, x5 and even x10 now compared to on or before Goodluck Johnathan era. Technically you are spending more for same thing, it's just that salary and minimum wage doesn't move positively according to inflation/economic impact.

It's not your fault. Everyone is going through it.

I spend more than that amount daily. No thanks to high prices of goods and services.

Tell your wife to make two varieties of big pot of soup then a pot of stew during the weekend. Take for example, okro and egusi and stock then in the fridge. These should be ok for the week to avoid constant cooking and wasting gas.

The idea behind this, is if she decided to use chicken, for example, 10k budgeted. This chicken will be used for all two different soup and stew.
They should cut the chicken small small.

Learn to buy in bulk too. Stop buying one module of rice, beans, gari on a daily basis. But

I know you might not have the money at once, but you can try to budget to purchase either a bag or half bag of those favorite food you constantly eat in the house.

Lastly, constant bread and tea for breakfast can be replaced with pap and fry yam, akara etc.
May God help everyone

Buy foodstuffs in bulk and keep at home. Learn to go to evening Market. Things are cheaper at this time. Substitute yam and bread for sweet potatoes and ogi.make your own ogi, grind till very smooth and do not filter out the fiber. Make akara and moimoi with the cheapest grade of beans in the market, save your expensive beans for beans porridge. Substitute expensive soups like banga and edikaikong for okra soup. Plant a small farm or garden if your environment allows. Teach your children the value of meals and money especially in this economy. Encourage your wife to be up and doing as well. May God help us all.

You are just wasteful and not budgeting properly.

10 x 30 = 300k

Explore alternatives, find best local food markets around you, do bulk purchase and budget monthly,

Sorry it's the economy.

10k is like 2k 2 years back.

Its not as if you don't manage money well, it's because of the inflation.

Just bread and tea for breakfast will take at least 2500 for the 5 of you, don't even talk about egg.

See. If you want to keep reasoning this matter you will just put yourself under needless tension. A family of 5 in this economy will spend that 10k or more daily. I know because that's what i spend with a wife and three kids.
This year alone over 4 million has gone down on just taking care of the home and providing for my family.

Yes I buy everything in bulk. Rice, beans, palm and ground nut oil, Garri, ground maize mixed with alibo, maggi, sugar.. everything in bulk. Still yet that 10k must go down daily. Breakfast, ingredients for lunch, transportation and other items.

You add gas and lightbill plus fueling for gen and you begin to see that 400k monthly sef na manage.

Still, nobody send us. We choose to marry and have families. We can't complain. Na make God just dey make way for us.
