Some works pay well in those war torn countries. I have seen ladies that traveled to Iraq and Lebanon for House chore work and were paid between $200 to $300 some years back. Some are back in Nigeria now bitting their fingers for leaving there while some have used the money gathered to migrate to Europe.

Not entirely right, the Lebanese that japa this side are well connected, they’re not begging for alms. They get good jobs (via these connections) and get to stay in places like Babana Island. An ordinary Nigerian can't even get good water to drink in his own country. Not everyone can leave Naija, if you have the opportunity, take it.

keep in mind that there are Nigerian Lebanese in Lebanon. There is a lounge/club called lagos in beruit.. Nigerians go there to study. A Ghanaian friend went to Lebanon for studies. Also, you can work in Lebanon. The country is ok,they have their issues but it is still good. On the low aspect of job, many women go there to do house help, I know of a girl who came back from Lebanon with 3000 dollars. She was there for 2 years, she took care of children. Sometimes, some Lebanese take their house help from Africa to Lebanon especially when they have a job, project or relocate just so that they can take care of their kids until they(Lebanese) themselves get situated in their country before they send the girl back to her home country.

Fatima Samuella Tholley’s hopes of returning to Sierra Leone were shattered when an Israeli airstrike killed her employer and destroyed her belongings in southern Lebanon.

Along with her cousin, she fled to Beirut, carrying only a change of clothes stuffed into a plastic bag, according to AFP.

"We don't know today if we will live or not, only God knows," Fatima said through tears during a video call with AFP. "I have nothing... no passport, no documents," she added.

The cousins have been sheltering in a cramped storage room of an empty apartment offered by a stranger.

With no access to TV or the ability to speak French or Arabic, they could only watch from the window as the city was bombarded by strikes.

The violence, which has killed over 1,000 people since mid-September, has left migrant workers particularly vulnerable. Their legal status is often tied to employers under the "kafala" system, which has been criticized by rights groups for enabling abuse.

"When we came here, our madams received our passports, they seized everything until we finished our contract," said 29-year-old Mariatu Musa Tholley. "Now [the bombing] burned everything, even our madams... only we survived."

Sierra Leone is working to provide emergency travel certificates to those without passports, according to Kai S. Brima from the foreign affairs ministry.

Many migrants in Lebanon, like Fatima and Mariatu, work for as little as $150 a month and are rarely allowed outside.

Another housekeeper, Patricia Antwin, stranded after her employer fled during an airstrike, said, "The people I work for, they left me, they left me and went away."

Housekeeper Kadij Koroma, who had been sleeping on the streets, said, "We don't have a place to sleep, we don't have food, we don't have water... everywhere you go, bomb."

Nigerian Govt Asks Nationals In Lebanon To Report In Beirut For Evacuation Amid War With Israel

The Nigerian government on Friday said it has commenced arrangement for evacuation of Nigerians living in Lebanon who are willing to return home following the escalating war with Israel in the country.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) which made this known in a statement said that following the government’s decision to evacuate its citizens in Lebanon, a multi-stakeholders meeting was convened where briefs were received on the condition of Nigerians in Lebanon and preparations by various agencies towards the success of the evacuation exercise.

The statement said, “The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is coordinating the evacuation, which has started with mobilization of the citizens and would be followed immediately with all necessary requirement to bring them home.

“The leader of the Nigerian community, through a telephone conversation acknowledged the support by the Nigerian Mission in Lebanon especially in their safe movement out of high risk areas, adding that no Nigerian life has been lost so far.

“In view of the planned voluntary evacuation, those Nigerians willing to be evacuated back home are advised to report to the Embassy in Beirut where they will be profiled for the airlift.”

The Nigerian government has noted that many of the Nigerians in Lebanon have failed to show willingness to be returned home amid the ongoing conflict in Lebanon, due to the clash between Israel and Hezbollah.

This was communicated in a statement by Amb. Eche Abu-Obe, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement on Saturday.

Speaking on the efforts of the government to evacuate citizens from Lebanon, Abu-Obe, said, “Presently, about 500 Nigerians have registered with the Mission, however, there are more than 2000 Nigeria citizens residing in the country.

“Even though most of them have not indicated willingness to return home in spite of the persuasion by our Embassy, we will continue to do everything to ensure the safety of our citizens.”

The ministry urged Nigerians not to “resist” evacuation, saying, “The Nigerian government urges all citizens living In Lebanon not to resist evacuation because the ongoing conflict may escalate and appeals for cooperation with the evacuation process and follow safety guidelines. Nigeria appreciates the understanding of the international community and will continue to monitor the situation.”

It further stated, “Further to the last statement issued on the evacuation of Nigerians from Lebanon, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to elucidate on the information contained therein.

“In this connection, the Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced evacuation procedures for Nigerian citizens living in Lebanon, following the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

“The Administration of HE Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, wishes to reiterate that the safety and well- being of its citizens remains its top priority. In the light of the deteriorating security situation in Lebanon, Government has activated emergency protocols to ensure the swift and safe evacuation of our citizens back home as soon as possible.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Presidency, National Emergency Management Agency, Department of State Services, National Intelligence Agency, Nigerian Immigration Service, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission and other relevant bodies, is coordinating the evacuation exercise to ensure the safe return of Nigerians from Lebanon.

“Our Embassy in Beirut has been issuing several advisories since the conflict started for our citizens to stay indoors and follow local authorities' instruction as well as appeal to those who have not registered with the Embassy, to do so through Email: info@mfa.gov.ng.”

The ministry said it was “pleased to report that no life has been lost”.

It said, “In view of the commendable efforts made by the Embassy, working in concert with the leadership of the Nigerian community to evacuate fellow Nigerians from southern Lebanon the epicenter of the conflict to Beirut, the Administration of President Tinubu is making arrangements to send a C- 130 Aircraft or any other available flight for the evacuation exercise.

“The Nigerian government urges all citizens living In Lebanon not to resist evacuation because the ongoing conflict may escalate and appeals for cooperation with the evacuation process and follow safety guidelines. Nigeria appreciates the understanding of the international community and will continue to monitor the situation.”
