Lagos Government Bans Pure Water From January 2025 by SmartPolician(op): 8:26pm On Oct 03, 2024
The Lagos State Goverment has announced plans to ban circulation of Single Use Plastics, such as pet bottles, sachet water, among others from January 2025 across the state.

Recall that the state government had in January 2024 banned the use of styrofoam in all government establishments and across the metropolis in general, following increasing prevalence of plastic waste and its negative effect on the environment in recent years.

Meanwhile, stakeholders in the sector have urged the state government to carryout phase implementation of the ban rather than outright enforcement for effective and efficient compliance as well as giving it human face in the present economic hardship.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced this on Thursday, at a stakeholders’ workshop and awareness on the implementation of the ban on usage of Styrofoam and SUPs for packaging in Lagos, held at Manufacturer Association of Nigeria, .

Wahab, who was represented by the Special Adviser on The Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, explained that the ban set to commence from January 2025, is part of measures by the State Government to put in place policy guidelines for plastic utility in further ensuring a sustainable management of plastic waste, healthy and safe environment.

Wahab added that the policy guideline will also be backed up with appropriate legal framework to be established through an enabling law.

He disclosed that Lagos presently generates about 13,000 tonnes of waste products monthly, with plastics making up over 60 per cent.

According to Wahab, “Plastics waste materials make up a significant proportion of solid wastes and litter the metropolis.

“It has become a highly visible part of the waste stream, PET, Styrofoam and nylon for sachet water, popularly called “pure water” commonly being used for water and beverages, take away plates and cups, carrier bags, among others.

“This development is posing environmental challenges ranging from Ecosystems degradation, Drainage clogging and flooding, Lagoon and Ocean debris with attendant harm to human resulting in high socio-economic impacts on the State.”

He stressed that effective plastic waste management is fundamental to delivery of the State government’s priority transformational agenda as laid down in Lagos State Development Plan (LSDP) and THEMES’ Plus Agenda of Governor Bababjide Sanwo-Olu, because it is a resource that can be managed to achieve economic, social and environmental benefits.

Wahab added that sustainable plastic waste management will create value from the waste stream and formalize the waste-pickers’ sector to improve livelihoods and reduce the pressure on landfill.

“It will improve the situation of the State’s drainage channels and reduce plastic pollution in the marine environment,” the commissioner stated.

Lagos chairperson, Association for Table Water Producers of Nigeria, ATWAP, Mosaku Ololade, said, “We have been engaging Lagos State Government on the way forward and we have been sensitizing our members on the planned ban.

“We want the government to continue to engage us. We are a responsible association. We are ready to work with the government.

“We have over 2,000 members in Lagos alone with over 10,000 workers. We heeby, implore the government to implement the ban in phases to allow our members ample opportunity for compliance.

“There are lot of things to be put in place before coming up with total enforcement.”

Pet bottles cannot be banned in Nigeria. Even more developed countries have not banned it, instead they are collected, recycled and used for other products.
I watched a documentary where pet bottles when recycled are used for road construction in Singapore.

Nonsense and banning everything!!

It is actually brilliant and it's effect is positive on the environment and their livelihoods.
Single Use Plastics are more expensive and the social cost is becoming unbearable to the rest of us not in the sectors profiting from the use of SUPs. The sachet water has since outlived its usefulness and has turned to complete nuisance apart from making water more expensive.
These old archaic environmental practices need to give way and I am profoundly proud that my Lagos State is taking the lead.

The waste has started reducing since the ban on Styrofoam and once we sort out the SUP of bottled water and waste sachet from pure water, we would have solved a huge environmental and economic problem.

The bottled water can come in cheap reusable plastics while sachet water will suddenly become more expensive so the stakeholders now earn more margins as more people move to reusable bottled water and later biodegradable containers.

Jan 2025 is long enough advance notice and I urge the stakeholders to cooperate with the Lagos State Government.

This is the best time to invest in Lagos. Invest in Lagos for great returns on your investment and best investor-friendly experience in Nigeria and Africa.

No "table water", no "pure water". What option(s) have they now given business owners and consumers? Or they considered banning the pure water business without putting consumers into consideration?

BTW:

Reno Omokri, despite all his divisive inclinations, attacks, vituperations, and hate speeches against the people of the South East while living abroad, entered the country and only to be seen having a handshake with Mr President? Isn't that a show of appreciation for doing what he was being paid to do?

This Lagos state government sef....is there anything they've banned that one can say they effectively enforced.

They banned motorcycles on major roads yet you see bike men plying practically all the major roads in lagos...from Oshodi to Abule egba...from Ojota to Ojuelegba...from Ogba to Berger...from Costain to apapa yet the ban is still in effect.

They banned tricycle on some route...yet they've taken over practically all the roads in Lagos.

They banned cart pushers...yet you see them traversing the length and breadth of Ikorodu road and other major roads like they are on parade.

They banned Styrofoam yet most food vendors still use it like they don't care.

They banned street market and trading on pedestrian walkways...yet Lagos state turn to one huge state market from 4pm in the evening with traders, commuters and motorists jostling for right of way.

They banned open defecation yet the whole of Lagos_ Ibadan road median from Alausa to ibafo, under the Oshodi bus terminals skywalk and the canal by the national art theatre are all converted to one huge poop collection / display canvas.

Infact I'm tired.

They only make the law no matter whose ox is gored. They don't care about the masses, the voters who came en masse to vote for them. This is to show the people that these looters don't care a hoot about your goddamm lives. Nigerian masses, you are on your own. Your salvation lies in your hands.

Lagos will ban everything but not Agbero

Toutism and governance in Lagos are inseparable

I wonder if the Governor sees Agbero in London and New-York when he visits.
