If you truly believe that VDM made reasonable sense in that his question, then, it means you are not sensible enough or may not even understand how God works.

Read what St. Paul said in the attached.
At a point in his ministry, the devil struck Paul with a very serious sickness which Paul went to God 3 good times asking Him for healing. God told him, that His grace is sufficient for him. Paul was not healed of that sickness till he died.
This is the same Paul that his shadow raised the dead. If an apron is touched on him and taken to somewhere in another city, the sick person will get healed, but he was not able to heal himself.

That verse 7 says that... So that Paul's ego may not be exalted beyond what is supposed to be. God may refuse to give some powers, else people may start worshipping the person instead of God.

The long and short of this is yes! Nigeria is a nation that is 98% religious and what that equally means is that the people value the opinions of their religious leaders even where it concerns politics more than they do any other opinion including even common sense.

A good example to look back on is the EndBadGovernance protest which took place only some weeks ago. The government paid off religious leaders in the country to warn their people not to show up to protest against bad governance in the country and guess what happened? The vast majority of Nigerians did not show up. They attended churches... there was even the million-man crusade held by RCCG around that same time to prove that it was not that people were in fact afraid the protests would be hijacked or their would be riots.
